The Mets have signed infielder Cheslor Cuthbert to a minors contract, according to Levi Luna of TN8 Nicaragua (Twitter link). Cuthbert didn’t last long on the open market, as the Reds just released him from a previous minor league deal on Tuesday.
While the Mets are slowly starting to get some injured personnel back onto the field, Cuthbert will help provide some depth for a club that is still very short-handed. He has played most of his MLB career as a third baseman, with a good chunk of playing time at first base and a handful of games at second.
Cuthbert hit .250/.300/.378 over 1160 plate appearances with the Royals from 2015-19, coming up through the pipeline as a notable prospect in Kansas City’s farm system and working as the regular third baseman in 2016. K.C. non-tendered Cuthbert following the 2019 season and he joined the White Sox on a minors deal, ultimately appearing in one big league game in 2020.

I wonder if he’s related to actress Elisha Cuthbert.
Monkey’s Uncle
Since he’s from Nicaragua and I believe that she’s Canadian, I’m going to hazard a guess that they likely aren’t.
Al Hirschen
No I think he’s related to Sean Avery

Cosmo2
As opposed to what? They’re injury-riddled. You’re criticizing him for making a depth signing?
Keithyim
Srsly. Half the team gets hurt and we’re blaming the Mets for trying to find a couple bandaids?

Who’s this Anderson guy anyway? First rule of disparaging comments: just make sure you spell the name right.

I watched the end of last night’s game. Mets lead off top of 9th down by a run with single and walk. 1st and 2B no outs Melancon the closer having control issues tying run on 2B Blankenhorn a career minor league player at the plate. Obvious bunt situation to move runners and stay out of DP. No he hits a DP ball but 3B tags lead runner. Pillar up next hits DP to end the game. Does anyone know how to play this game anymore? Sad
MetsFan22
Rojas is a horrible manager. He is getting praised for his depth being able to win games but we should be like 20 games over 500 if it was a normal season with a good manager and less injuries!. The Mets are as talented as any team.
Robrock30
Rojas seems to be a scripted manager executing FO planned moves and he can’t manage in game situations which the old time managers were capable of doing.
SonnySteele
Your comment makes no sense. Rojas isn’t being praised for the Mets’ depth. Sandy Alderson is. You said, “We should be like 20 games over 500 if it was a normal season with a good manager and less injuries.” So Rojas is to blame for the injuries and the fact that this season isn’t quote “normal”? Are you sure you are a Mets fan?
MetsFan22
I meant like he is favorite to win manager of the year. While he shouldn’t. He has done more harm than good. Sandy having depth and us playing elite defense bc of our shifting and our pitching is winning us games. Not Rojas. But we need our players back fast. So we could dominate.
Flyby
so who decides the shifting, i believe the manager may have a tiny say in that along with other coaches.
But i guess we could go out and get Joe Maddon, Joe Girardi, or how about AJ Hinch Bud Black. I mean most of those guys are doing great and who could be better than World Series Winning coaches and/or former managers of the year. How about Dave Martinez? What are the records of those coaches and how are they doing again. Are they doing just as well as the mets with less injuries?
Who is this great coach you would like hired that every other team has passed on or made available?

” … if it was a normal season with a good manager and less injuries!”
Yeah, but the Mets have had lots of injuries, so … ?
Cosmo2
Look, I hate Rojas’ managerial style… hate that he leads Pillar off, for example… but you gotta give credit where it’s due; all the injuries and he’s kept them in first place. The players love him and the clubhouse is terrific despite a roving cast of characters. Seems like he’s actually doing a good job cuz player chemistry is a better judge of most managers than lineups and in game management.

@Cosmo2
As a Yankee fan, I have to agree with you. Your last statement, particularly, is well taken. It’s widely believed that Boone is Cashman’s puppet and lineups and pitching matchups are called by the front office, not Boone. Meanwhile, the team appears lethargic, unfocused and dispirited much of the time. Having watched some innings of Mets games, I was struck by the superior intensity and enthusiasm I saw in their dugout. Rojas’s players looked like they were determined to win, genuinely liked each other and were having fun playing the game.
rct
@Cosmo2: My thoughts exactly. I’m not a big fan of his Xs and Os (like bullpen use and situational hitting), but he’s kept them over .500 and in first despite having a AAA lineup out there most games.
jim stem
I know Rojas is being praised for where the team is on the standings, but seriously, it’s because of the players the work of the front office. I’ll also give credit to whomever is setting up the pitching game strategy.
I watch every Mets game (MLB.tv), and he has not impressed me one bit. I think he’s gotten incredibly lucky so far due to the players stepping up.
How can you bat Maybin third? On a team in this situation, you want your three healthiest, best hitters batting 1-2-3 to make sure they get the at bats.
Letting Mazeika be sent down was a mistake. He was looking like a solid late game pinch hitter who is also your 3rd string catcher.
Working this bullpen back to back (and sometimes ‘to back’, 3 in a row!), is already blowing it up. May, Castro, Smith and Familia are not fooling anyone when used this much, meanwhile, Lugo was on the roster 3 days before being used.
Lucchesi needs to FOLLOW an opener, but their most consistent long man (Reid-Foley) was also sent down. Personally, he should have been a two headed monster with Lucchesi or Peterson instead of pitching at AAA.
Lindor’s nightly color show needs to be refocused and Dom Smith should have been at 1b every game Alonso was out.
These defensive shifts are giving up runs late in games. With two strikes, you have to pull them off with runners in scoring position. Nobody seems to know who is covering what and Lindor is all over the infield making plays.
I think Rojas has this team below .500 before they get back to NY. He might be great in the clubhouse, but, like Kapler his first time around, is wiping out the ‘pen before July.
Flyby
according to robrock “Rojas seems to be a scripted manager executing FO planned moves” … so can he be blamed for what the front office is scripting or are you giving him credit for the wins and losses for the moves on the field.
Basically what i am reading from a lot of these posts is front office gets praised for lineup and position moves and roster adjustments when it works and blame rojas when it doesnt. It has to be one or the other. Rojas either maked the call on if mazeika stays on the 26 man roster or front office does. Rojas either makes the decision on who’s starting a game or he isnt. He is making the calls on who plays where for a game.
He is doing an ok job considering everyday he has another new face on the team due to an injury and the team is 5 games above 500.
Metsin777
Luis Rojas is an awful manager. Hes under performing and cant even make decisions the average fan could make. The only reason the Mets are in first place in the division is because we have played so many below 500 teams. We have a 2-12 record vs teams over 500, that shows Rojas’s true ability
Robrock30
Flyby,
I watch most Mets games, and watching Rojas I feel that his moves are the result of reading his cue cards with instructions when to remove a
SP when to PH and substitute players. I just don’t sense he reacts well to in game situations in real time. He can’t manage well when the Game develops and he needs to go off script. He is actually very bad at reading the in game situations and what they call for as last night in the 9th inning when the obvious move was to bunt the runners to 2B & 3B with no outs.
Flyby
Lets assume you bunt them over
You have kevin pillar up who has not been doing well since coming back and i dont blame him he probably needed a little more time to adjust. I believe he is 2-12 or something like that. he now pops out most likely like he had done most of the game or it doesnt get out of the infield.
You now have runners 2nd and 3rd with two outs and lindor coming up. Lindor is batting .100 with 2 outs and runners in scoring position. Not an ideal situation.
I dont blame him for taking a shot with the luck they have been having with no names coming up with big hits based on the above numbers. Look at Mazeika with his clutch hits he did pretty well. Which btw, I am not a fan of them sending Maz down but if i remember right they needed a pitcher. Personally i would have brought Maz back up instead of acquiring this kid when they designated Tovar, but maybe they prove me wrong and travis does well. In the end, its not as obvious as you think and he went with taking a chance on an unknown and could have been a hero or a zero. This time it was zero.
Robrock30
Mets needed Blankenhorn to bunt the runners over to 2B & 3B there with zero outs to avoid the DP which is what happened to end the Game. Tying run on 3B and go ahead at 2B takes a sacrifice fly or a wild pitch with Melancon throwing breaking balls in the dirt to score the game tying run there. Baseball 101.
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Flyby That’s the nature of the business. The manager always takes all the blame since he’s the easiest to replace when things are not going right.
There has been a lot of chatter about inexperienced managers being micro-managed by the front office. None of us know whether it’s true or not or to what extent. However, it wouldn’t surprise me if analytics departments are running real-time situational simulations to help dicatate in-game moves.
Either way, I think Rojas is doing a splendid job keeping his team afloat.
BobbyKidd1965
Thank you for pointing that out. Having stayed up to watch the game in it’s entirety knowing full well I’d hate myself at 4am when I got up for work; this only added to my frustration and high blood pressure; leaving me laying awake until 1:45am. Is the bench coach just a stupid a ‘yes-man’ or does he have a brain of his own to interject and strongly suggest a better alternative to Rojas? This s**t has got to stop.

The Mets would be better off signing Elisha Cuthbert. They’ll likely get more production.
SonnySteele
She probably looks better in a Mets uniform, too.

Definitely, though at 38, she’s a bit older than her cousin Cheslor (LOL). Her husband played in the NHL so maybe he could take out some of their opponents with crosschecks.

The White Sox have entered the conversation…

lmao, no. Even as a Mets homer, there’s no way they’re top 5. Maybe when fully healthy, but there’s a really good chance that’s not going to happen all year. Have to put at least the Padres, Dodgers, Giants, Cards, and Cubs ahead of them.
pinstripes17
LOL, I needed that laugh this morning, thanks MetsFan22! The delusion is real.
VonPurpleHayes
This list is just trolling. The Mets have played worse than every team on this list, even before the injuries got ridiculous. The Mets are currently the best team in a weak division. They have elite pitching; starting and relief. They’ve been playing great defense. Their offense stinks. Blame the injuries all you want, but their offense was even worse beforehand. The bench (which is now starting) has been clutch. Mets are a good team and should compete for a playoff spot, but they are not scaring the heavy weights yet. They’re still 4-12 against teams with a winning record. They also don’t win on the road. If the Mets win or split this difficult roadtrip, then we will see where they stand. So far they’re 0-1.
VonPurpleHayes
I’m actually wrong about the Mets being 4-12 against winning teams. They’re 2-11. To me, the Mets look like a team that took advantage of a weak schedule. Now that they’re finally playing good teams, they have a chance to prove me wrong, but they lost last night.
MetsFan22
The Padres are not better than the Mets. They are lucky they are facing our B team. Ik they have injures to too but both squads full strength we would embarrass them in the playoff. In 6 games max.
Nobody is beating Degrom 2x Walker stroman and carrasco and our bullpen and good lineup….. nobody…. I’d actually bet my house rn the Mets win the WS…. they are that special.
VonPurpleHayes
Carrasco hasn’t pitched a single game, and may not even be good anymore. Slow down a bit. Good lineup? Your offense stinks.
MetsFan22
Your really saying a offense stinks after 3 weeks of evidence…. just take a look at the players on the team and try to tell me it would have stunk all year… you can’t…..
VonPurpleHayes
Look. I think the Mets are good. I think they’re a playoff team. But they don’t score runs. Their offense isn’t great. Their pitching is some of the best in the league. You keep touting about an elite offense that doesn’t exist. I’m very happy they hit against Arizona at home. That’s great. Let’s see how you do on this roadtrip. They’re last in the division in runs scored. It’s not an elite offense.
MetsFan22
The Mets do hit…….
Lindor
Alonso
Smith
Conforot
Nimmo
McNeil
Davis
That’s a great core
CluHaywood
They are a slightly above average team, at the top of a bad division. A high end team does not dumpster dive for the Cheslor Cuthbert’s of the world, because they already have the talent in their farm system.
Atlmurph3
What planet do you live on that you think that is a great core? None of these people have done anything yet this year…I repeat nothing. The Mets have scored the fewest runs in the National League this year. Your pitching has carried this team. I get being excited about your team but please for the love of god, please stop trying to convince people that this team is anything special. Oh…and I’ll take you up on your offer of your house that the Mets will win the World Series.
