The Mets have outrighted outfielder Cameron Maybin and infielder Wilfredo Tovar to Triple-A Syracuse after both cleared waivers, notes Tim Healey of Newsday (Twitter link). Both players have the right to refuse a minor league assignment and elect free agency.
With their outfield in shambles, New York acquired Maybin from the Cubs a few weeks ago. The hope was the respected veteran would prove a competent fill-in while many of the Mets regulars recovered from various injuries. That didn’t prove to be the case, though, as the 34-year-old went just 1-28 with three walks and twelve strikeouts in nine games. The Mets designated Maybin for assignment on Monday, selecting the hot-hitting Mason Williams from Triple-A in his place.
Tovar’s major league work was even sparser than Maybin’s. Selected to the roster on May 18, Tovar only picked up twelve plate appearances in six games before being removed from the roster. The Mets designated the 29-year-old for assignment after claiming Travis Blankenhorn off waivers on Tuesday.

Hopefully Mason Williams does something never did anything for the Yankees.
DarkSide830
i mean, he hit when they have him a shot.
WarkMohlers
They never game him a legitimate shot. They gave him over slot to sign him as a high schooler, then he had like 65 ABs at the majors for 7 years in the org.
But, that isn’t all on the Yankees. If he shortened his swing and worked on better utilizing his speed in CF and on the bases, he could have carved out some position.
But who knows, wouldnt be surprised to see him turn around and be a OBP heavy 20 hr corner outfielder. Because why the fudge not?

The guy was constantly getting hurt after getting playing time.

I hope his walk up song is Classical Gas

Part of his issue has been injuries, but he’s bounced around for a reason. He didn’t get an extended look because he lacks the hitting skills to be a regular. He can catch the ball, but he has an empty batting average. He’s a career .270ish hitter in the minors, which is ok, but he also carries an OBP in the low .300s and a SLG percentage in the mid-300s. That’s why he is and will remain a journeyman.
LordD99
*Majors* not minors. His minors numbers are a tick better, as you’d expect, but he remains an empty BA.
EasternLeagueVeteran
No emptier a BA than Cameron Maybin’s 1-28 lifetime average as a Met, with his one hit being a swinging bunt single the fielder watched to see if it would go foul.
LordD99
My post had nothing to do with Maybin.
PoloGrounds62
Maybin isn’t as good as his 1-28 would suggest. These moves remind me of Brody signing every POS he could find. And get rid of Khalil asap.
Cohens_Wallet
He’s looked good so far, really liking his slap hitting approach. Making nice defensive plays as well.
Definitely not bad to have as a 4th or 5th outfielder as long as he keeps this up.
angt222
Wow the Mets were finally able to outright someone without Seattle claiming them.

The night is young.
Wilmer Flores' Tears
The only reason Maybin is still hanging on is because his wife is greedy and loves to spend money. I think he has like 7 or 8 kids as well, so he’s financially stuck even if he leaves her. Luckily he got that one long-term deal with San Diego a decade ago before things turned south.
WarkMohlers
Totally. Only reason he’d continue to take hundreds of thousands, potentially millions, of dollars is solely because of that. Looking at that mans face when he plays is depressing. One time I saw his family forcible place him into position on the field, his cries went unheeded by all in attendance but me. I speak his story today.

You truly must be miserable dude. There’s hope for you. Maybin and his wife have been running their charity for kids for many years.
Wilmer Flores' Tears
Strictly for tax benefits so she can spend even more.

Get lost, troll.

It must be so depressing to be 34 and unable to be a proficient baseball player and keep trying to do it.
Cam
Almost as depressing as sitting at home and pointing it out
LordD99
Nope. I’d imagine playing MLB for 15 seasons and banking $40M by 34 is not depressing at all.
