The Mariners announced a slew of impactful roster moves this afternoon, starting with the reigning Rookie of the Year in the American League Kyle Lewis going back on the injured list – this time with a right meniscus tear, per the team. Robert Dugger also departs; Seattle optioned the right-hander to Triple-A.
In good news, Marco Gonzales is re-joining the team from the injured list, as anticipated. He will start tonight’s ballgame for the Mariners. If the third-place M’s are going to make an unexpected run at relevancy this year, they’ll need Gonzales to be a force in the rotation. He has made five starts on the season with a 5.40 ERA/5.52 FIP.
As for Lewis, it’s not yet clear if the tear is significant, but he has had multiple procedures performed on that knee, notes Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times. That’s certainly not ideal for a player like Lewis, whose athleticism is a key asset. He has appeared in just 36 of the Mariners’ 55 games this season, posting 0.7 bWAR and a 112 wRC+ in that time.
While losing Lewis definitely smarts, Mariners’ fans will have another young outfielder to tune in for: Taylor Trammell has been recalled after a successful stint in Triple-A. Trammell posted some highlights at the start of the season, but ultimately slumped to a .157/.255/.337 line in 95 plate appearances.
It’s easy to forget because he’s been traded twice, but Trammell remains a top prospect, and he’s still just 23 years old. Prior to this season, he had not played about Double-A, but he found himself on the opening day roster nevertheless. When he was optioned on May 13th, then, it was his first thwack at Triple-A, and he took it: .384/.413/.726 with six home runs in 80 plate appearances for the Tacoma Rainiers.
Finally, Dugger returns to the minors with a 6.06 ERA in eight appearances (two starts). A 4.83 FIP suggests Dugger has dealt with a touch of small-sample bad luck. The former Marlin has induced a 39.6 percent groundball rate with a 22.1 percent strikeout rate and 8.3 percent walk rate in 16 1/3 innings for Seattle’s parent club.
The Baseball Fan
Lewis injured, Gonzales activated. Cant be healthy at the same time, and this folks show how MLBs biggest issue has a big impact on the game. 5 game winning streak though, and as A Sox fan who only 2 years ago my own team was in a similar situation, I’m happy for The Mariners. Great future for them and might even be a wild card contender this year if they can stay healthy

Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.

Thoughts: I think I need to cut my toenails tonight

.1139 ops after getting sent down. If Trammell can do 75% of what he did at triple a going forward he’ll win the ROY
DocBB
Not happening. He Struckout 17 times in 73AB’s at AAA. That bodes quite poorly for him in the Majors.
DarkSide830
id like to be told again that Lewis isnt injury prone because apparently that was crazy talk circa two months ago.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“crazy talk”? Uh, I’m not sure.
But it is excessively premature. I feel fine with that proclamation.
DarkSide830
minors track record speaks for itself
Ducky Buckin Fent
That’s crazy talk, @DarkSide.
Heh.
Or…maybe I should check his MiLB stats. But I still think you may be jumping to conclusions. Or…perhaps I am.
But – damnit – I’m convinced someone is.
compassrose
Darkside Lewis isn’t injury prone. Most of his injuries have been hustle plays. We had another CF that I guess was injury prone too. Does falling in the shower and breaking your hand count? Do hustle plays count too? The only injury I can think of was the fastball to the face. I think that was him. I guess we will see.

“Compass rose” is a fantastic screen name for a Mariners fan. Just had to say that
compassrose
Thanks I changed my screen name when I thought of it.

Damn Kyle Lewis was going off before this injury, that sucks. OF is our strongest position by far tho so I guess this doesn’t hurt too bad. Plus adding Marco back is amazing. Can’t wait until he can pitch CGs again
Tony Carbone
Its always good to get a middle of the rotation hurler back on the hill.
If the Mariners could get to the top spot…of the second division, and backdoor its way to a postseason berth, ending decades of fishing in October, including every year Dipoto has been here, well, whatever it takes to remove the stain that has covered the Seattle faithful for years.
What I like about this squad is its resilience, they keep battling.
What I don’t like is that they look closer to an all out rebuild, 3 or 4 more years
SodoMojo90
Ok troll
Tony Carbone
What GMs from which legitimate playoff teams are sitting around the table bouncing Gonzales name around and saying if on,y they had him leading their rotation?
He’s solid, I’d want him, just not leading my rotation.
Whats troll about that?
We haven’t been to any postseason in 20 years, how many have been under Dipoto?
Whats troll about that?
ayrbhoy
You must be confused- Marco Gonzales was never brought to the club to be the Ace. Who knows who that Ace will be, maybe they’re developed in house- a Hancock, Kirby maybe Williamson or maybe it’s a FA. If Kikuchi keeps progressing he would probably be given the ball in a (hypothetical) game 1.
I’m sure the FO visualizes a rotation with at least a couple SP’s who are better than Marco G.
SodoMojo90
Riddle me this. How do we go from the worst farm system in baseball to top 3 and were due for an all out rebuild when pretty much every single one of our top prospects besides Kelenic, Lewis and Gilbert hasn’t played a game in the majors. That makes absolutely zero sense. Theres still Rodriguez, Kirby, Hancock, Marte, Raleigh and more. Yeah it’s time for an all out rebuild. Let’s just trade those guys and try for a different group of top prospects

Trade Lewis to Baltimore tothenext Adam Jones
compassrose
Tony Carbine if you think Seattle has 3-4 years more of a rebuild you are either not watching or an Angel Troll. I will admit it will take that long to get where they are a contender every year but we have almost all the players we need. There are some that have 3 years to get here and in that time the kids that are here will get better.
Dipoto has done a lot with not much to start with. Seattle was lucky to have 1 player a year in the top 100 prospects now we have 5 or 6. I will not explain the gains because you are not worth it.

Bronx that is the kind of dumb trades we have dealt with for years. How many trades has Dipoto made even close to that bad? Whenever you saw or heard Seattle make bad trades it was always oh crap who took our GM to the woodshed this time.

Reason #1 to keep and extend Haniger: Lewis injuries. Haniger could DH 50% of games going forward and allow Lewis (when healthy), Kelenic, and Julio to still play OF mostly full-time. Still have guys like Trammell, Fraley, and DeLoach who could prove themselves as well, but don’t think the rebuild needs to continue. No need to trade everybody.
BuddyBoy
Lewis needs to be a DH the way things are going.
BenjiB24
I definitely agree to keep Haniger
ayrbhoy
Haniger- keep him. Injuries, Rookie growing pains and prospects not panning out, there’s at least 3 reasons to keep him. Why would you get young prospects in return when you have zero guarantee they’ll be half as good as Haniger
compassrose
You have zero guarantee anyone will be good after the next play. They could get hit in the head with a pitch could destroy an ankle or knee.
If you could trade Haniger for a stud 2nd bm who is blocked you wouldn’t do it with a few extra players in the mix too? Sports is a gamble when you sign players to a long term contract and guaranteed money. IMHO you would trade a guy like Haniger if it improves the team. I guess we can disagree.
ayrbhoy
I agree with your philosophy of trading someone if your return improves the team. Most ppl would agree to that strategy. The jury is still out on whether the Ty France trade falls under that category.
I believe you should extend Haniger because he is one of the best OFers in the league. At this point a top 5 OF. Re: the ppl who say he’s only shown us “one good season”- that comment is misleading and untrue. Haniger has shown us he’s one of the best players in MLB when healthy. “Why keep a player who has trouble staying healthy?” Haniger’s injuries have all been accidental fluke injuries. Very different from a possible recurring major injury like KLew.
2 main reasons you have to keep Haniger- Lewis could be out for a significant period of time. This would leave us with a vastly inexperienced OF who would need much time to develop into an All-Star type player. There would not be any improvement to the team realistically until late 2022 or 2023 season. We could theoretically improve on our INF or Pitching from a Haniger trade but still we’d be leaving a huge hole in OF and in the lineup- ‘robbing Peter to pay Paul.’
The other and most important reason is the team is being groomed to become a competitive team late this yr, 2022 beyond. Trading Haniger moves the rebuild date farther along which would enfuriate much of the fan base who’s seen a few years of losing seasons already. The fact you’d be seriously downgrading your OF prevents the team from improving, effectively staying where they are. You cant expect a team to trade an OFer who’s close to being Hanigers AS level because they wouldnt need Haniger in that situation. The idea of getting a DeGrom, Bieber or Glasnow or an AS INF in return would be a pipe dream.
Just a couple of words on my opinion, haha.
compassrose
I really can’t argue with any of your points. IMHO there are pros and cons to trading him. I wrote on the trade deadline post a lot might be tied to Trammel. If he continues to play like he did in Tacoma he makes the argument to trade him easier. Before his injury I was dead set against a trade. That was when he was the best OFer we had. Now I can see a reason for the trade but it is a gamble.
bigdaddyhacks
Gotta get Lewis out of CF. Kelenic needs to play CF
compassrose
Big Daddy I always thought Kelenic in RF Julio in CF Lewis in LF. Maybe swap Kelenic and Julio because Julio has a better arm. Will be interesting to see it play out.
My acct how long can we keep a guy like Trammel in AAA? It wouldn’t be fair to him to make him stay down another 5 years I think it is. Fraley could be the 4th OF and when it is time for another player to come up trade him for need. I love Haniger and was on the no trade list for a long time. He is way more valuable in trade than to keep. Especially right now when he is playing well. Seattle played almost their whole life with an avg to just below avg LFer. They have the bodies right now to get the most out of Haniger now. Could Seattle get a 5 tool 2nd bm for him? If a team had a need for a proven OFer and they have an All Star above him then yes. Right opportunity and timing.
compassrose
I also think we keep Seager for next year too. Will be a clubhouse leader one of the top defenders at 3rd and has been here his whole career. Then see what we have in the wings. France can play it a bit and if he gets close to Seager he can move there. If Kyle wants to take a hometown disct sign him for a few years he can be the DH and back up 3rd bm. France is good but not Kyle good.

@TCZencka in the 4th paragraph…Smarts = hurts?

Kyle Segar is the best 3B in Mariners franchise history. It has nothing to do with the article. Every team needs a face and now that Felix is gone, that’s whatSegar is in SEA.
compassrose
Thanks for pointing out in the middle of your paragraph Seager had nothing to do with the article. I bet I knew that when I wrote it. Maybe it was you writing it that put it in my mind. I am confused now.
