7:44 pm: The Phillies are placing Segura on the 10-day IL, Girardi told reporters (including Matt Gelb of the Athletic). Maton has indeed been recalled to replace him. GM Sam Fuld said Segura suffered a Grade 1 groin strain and is expected to miss three weeks (via Zolecki).
7:57 am: Tuesday’s 5-3 loss to the Dodgers was a particularly tough night for the Phillies, due to injuries to both Bryce Harper and Jean Segura. Harper left the game in the fourth inning due to lower back tightness, while Segura came up limping after beating out a grounder to first base in the ninth. Segura was replaced for pinch-runner Andrew Knapp, as the backup catcher was the last man remaining on Philadelphia’s bench after Harper’s injury and other in-game substitutions.
Segura’s injury was labeled a left groin strain, and manager Joe Girardi told reporters (including MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki) after the game that “I’m not so confident that’s day to day,” so a trip to the 10-day injured list certainly looks to be in the cards for the infielder. This would Segura’s second IL stint of the season, after a right squad strain sidelined for 15 games in late April and early May.
Despite the missed time, Segura has still been one of the Phillies’ best hitters this season, and he has been on pace for the best numbers of his 10-year career. Segura has hit .332/.379/.465 over 203 plate appearances (133 wRC+, 136 OPS+), cracking three homers and scoring 24 runs. While Segura has benefited from a sky-high .378 BABIP and his .365 wOBA far outpaces his .321 xwOBA, he has also been one of the league’s harder player to strike out. Now in his second year as the Phils’ starting second baseman, Segura is also delivering above-average glovework, as per the Outs Above Average (+4) and Defensive Runs Saved (+4) metrics, though UZR/150 (-7.4) isn’t a fan of his defense at the keystone.
Nick Maton would be the likeliest Triple-A call-up if Segura did hit the injured list, as Maton has the second-most innings at second base of any Phillies player this season. The rookie got off to a hot start in his first MLB season, but an 0-for-20 slump resulted in Maton being sent to Triple-A last week. Ronald Torreyes and Brad Miller are second-base options on the active roster, though Torreyes has been starting at shortstop in the wake of Maton’s slump and Miller’s utilityman skills might be required in the outfield with Harper hurting.
In the bigger picture, however, there’s really no ideal way for the Phillies to replace Segura and Harper if both miss a substantial amount of time. Philadelphia is in second place in the NL East but with only a 32-33 record, and the team sits five games back of both the division lead and the second NL wild card berth. If the Phillies continue to hover around the .500 mark and can’t gain any ground in either playoff race, it remains to be seen how aggressive the team might be at the trade deadline (or, if they might pivot to selling some players).

Do people think there will be a spike in pitching injuries due to the recent crackdown on foreign substances?
Im wondering if there will be a spike due to lack of control and maybe hurting the arm
Flyby
im thinking until atleast next year any pitching reliever that comes in has to make 3 pitches in a row that are in the strike zone or close to it. Just precautionary until they have had some time to adjust.
I agree with Glasnow that it should have been done in the offseason or more than a week or two before you slam it shut or not in the middle of the season. All Star Game i think would have been a good date to slam it shut. Give time for the umps to know what to look for and pitchers arms to adjust slowly to not using it. Yes i understand it is cheating regardless how you look at it … (and yes i hate to bring up the astros thing but that took a year to go through all of that and that was not electical not physical and wasnt as rampant)
DarkSide830
the stuff having been used prior didnt seem to be stopping injuries.

@darkside830
Would a Gerritt Cole or a Tyler Glasnow going for TJS satisfy be injury enough to rethink this? Perhaps Tatis Jr getting hit in the eye with a fastball from Bauer because he is not used to the tackless grip? Your up and coming face of the league done for his career because he cant see out of his left eye because of a rush job enforcement. I’m not saying scrap the idea but what i am saying give it ample time to adjust. could these happen without the “grip” yes but now is more likelier for it to happen
This in reality would be the equivalent of taking away pine tar from batters at the end of the month. It what batters use for grip so they can swing harder. If they have to hold back their swing to maintain control of the bat with no adjustment period wouldnt there be an influx of injuries from overswinging? My guess is you would see ton of rotator cuff injuries from and shoulder sprains and potentially core muscle issues especially from injury prone all muscle guys like Aaron Judge. This wouldnt include the number of times the bat gets away and concusses the catcher and ump.
Cat Mando
Flyby………….
HBP have been at all-time highs the last 4 years with the “grip’. Besides, teams and players were warned before the season that if they continued to over-the-top cheat there would be changes. They have no one to blame but them selves….period. They were warned and stubbed their noses.. They had this past off-season and ST to learn not to cheat…they didn’t. No amount of hyperbole will change that.
Manfred all but acknowledged that nothing would have been done had the players not pushed things too far when he said….”I understand there’s a history of foreign substances being used on the ball, but what we are seeing today is objectively far different, with much tackier substances being used more frequently than ever before. It has become clear that the use of foreign substance has generally morphed from trying to get a better grip on the ball into something else — an unfair competitive advantage that is creating a lack of action and an uneven playing field.”
DarkSide830
no. one TJS doesnt overshadow the numerous guys who have already needed TJS this year. and it shouldn’t matter who it happens to, injuries suck. Gerrit Cole or Fernando Tatis is no more worth protecting then Mike Mayers or Sergio Alcantara.
DadsInDaniaBeach
My opinion for what it’s worth is a YES! Pitchers have been trying to improve their grip on the ball because MLB keeps doctoring the balls. The seams are almost imperceptible. One pitcher described it as feeling like it’s covered in sand. Now they have to grip the ball much harder which will result in muscle and arm strain.

Not comparing the Phils to the Dodgers or anything, but as a team, they have completely underperformed since 2018….
I listen to 97.5 the Fanatic and Jason Stark comes on every Wednesday. He has said numerous times that he has approached other teams asking about the Phis and most often they reply something to the tune “just can’t put my finger on it….team is clearly talented, but doesn’t produce”
To tear things down would take another 6 years, but .500 ball is as well frustrating….My vote is to re-tool (whatever that might look like….) then hope the infusion of aaa’ers helps.

The Phillies seem to have found the same problem the Yankees had for quite awhile. Too many veterans and not enough young players pushing for roles. They seem to have quite a few contract players and not many players who just love the game. Bryant would be a bad choice for an addition. Baez or Urshela would be perfect. The Phillies need their Gardner type player to push the rest of the team.

They need to retool. And imo this is entirely possible. Just look at what drops off the books this offseason.
Bradley – $6 million
McCutchen – $12 million ($15-$3 million buyout)
Odubel – $9 million ($11.5-$2.5 million buyout)
Neris – $5 million
Hale – $850k
Velazquez – $4 million
Joyce – $1.5 million
Knapp $1.1 million
Miller $3.5 million
Kinzler – $3 million
Anderson – $4 million
Moore – $3 million
That’s roughly $51 million in freed up cash to supliment the team’s core. There’s so much unwarranted doom and gloom regarding this team. They honestly remind me of the 2006 squad. Which imo means that they are a few proper tweaks away from being really good.

The Phillies have as much lineup talent in baseball! They need to get GS back and the overpaid people to hit. The pitchers need to cover some innings in the rotation and you should take off!
