The Yankees announced yesterday first baseman Luke Voit was beginning a rehab assignment with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The 30-year-old has missed a little less than three weeks after suffering a Grade 2 oblique strain. It’s been an injury-marred campaign so far for Voit, who also missed the first six weeks of the season with a meniscus tear in his knee. Last season’s home run leader, Voit has only managed 50 plate appearances in between the two IL stints. His forthcoming return will be a welcome development for the Yankees, whose first baseman have hit a dreadful .176/.266/.270 in 2021. Only the Indians have gotten less offensive production at the position this season.
More injury updates from around the game:
- Mariners outfielder Mitch Haniger left yesterday’s game in the first inning after fouling a ball off his left knee. It seems he’s dodged serious injury, though, as manager Scott Servais told reporters (including Corey Brock of the Athletic) he suffered a deep bone bruise but avoided any fractures. Haniger, who missed the second half of 2019 and all of 2020 due to injury, has rebounded to post a strong .259/.310/.518 line with 16 homers across 274 plate appearances this season.
- The Cardinals are likely to activate lefty Kwang-hyun Kim to start tomorrow night’s game against the Marlins, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat was among those to relay. The 32-year-old went on the IL on June 5 with back stiffness, but he’s apparently in line to return after a minimal stint. Kim has tossed 40 innings of 4.05 ERA/4.29 SIERA ball this season. The St. Louis rotation has been hit hard by injuries in recent weeks, with Miles Mikolas and Jack Flaherty both landing on the IL for extended periods. That makes the rotation an obvious area to target if the Cardinals look to acquire outside help before the trade deadline.
- Phillies shortstop Didi Gregorius suffered a setback in his rehab process from a right elbow impingement, manager Joe Girardi told reporters (including Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philadelphia). It doesn’t seem to be particularly worrisome, as Girardi said it was “a little stiffness and a little soreness” and that the organization is still hoping to get him back in relatively short order. It’s been a tough season for Gregorius, who hit just .229/.266/.364 in 128 plate appearances before landing on the IL last month.

Voit is the Yankees version of George Springer, very talented guy who just keeps having mysterious muscle injuries this year. Makes you question what’s really going on…
DarkSide830
Voit is the Yankees version of Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge…wait
Ducky Buckin Fent
I know you get it in on Springer whenever you can. Good example right here.
I also know that by “question what’s really going on” you actually mean to question Springer’s desire to play. I.e.; “he’d rather sit in a hot tub & collect checks”. (I believe that’s a direct quote from an earlier post of yours re George Springer.)
Now you seem to be heading that way with Voit. Stop.
Luke Voit is a hungry player. He’s only made a little over $5MM in his career. He is lauded as an incredibly hard worker. He’s played hurt for the Yanks more than once. Remember the “foot stuff” in ’19?
Luke Voit wants to play.
I’m quite certain that Springer does too, btw.
oldmansteve
True. I guarantee Springer is getting brought along as slow as necessary right now given the money investment and just how good the Blue Jays OF has been. If Springer was the one making the decision to play, he would have played a lot more games than he has.
Dustyslambchops23
While I agree the jays seem to be cautious and the OF has been good especially since Lourdes has caught fire, but Springer back means one of Teo or Lourdes going to the DH spot which would be a huge boost given how Rowdy really hasn’t gotten going this year.
I think GS starts minors tomorrow, hopefully no set backs
Nothing
There will be a “reaggravation” of his injury, just count on it. If he actually complete rehab and comes back, I’ll literally drink water.
nitemare
Springer wants to cheat. Not voit

I need an explanation. Are we questioning the medical staff? The players heart/drive/motivation? I’d question the medical staff for the Yankees and Mets more than anything else. Guys like Voit have to grind and play through little injuries to earn their next paycheck. Guys like Springer have extra pressure to perform after signing a big contract. Both lead to real injuries that take time to heal. But I’d bet even while they’re hurt they work harder than you and me.

st. louis needs to deactivate shildt from his post. this should be the last move mo makes before he is fired.
bighiggy
The players really seem to like schildt, and man has he tried to piece together a team with all the injuries. I wouldn’t mind seeing stubby manage though. Jeff albert and his terrible hitting approach needs to be canned. It obviously hasnt been the glorious success it was raved to be when he was hired. I think maddux has been good, but for whatever reason the pitchers have gotten away from the contact approach and are walking way too many people. I think Maddux and schildt may deserve a longer leash. Jeff albert and mozeliak could go and their would be instant optimism.

No doubt Mo made some bad choices… extending Carp and Mikolaus for example. But how quickly we forget that he fleeced Arenado from Colorado and also got Goldy. Not to mention navigating the resigning of Yadi and Waino.
Let’s see what he comes up with, he’s earned the chance

I have personally known mike shildt for over 30 years (he coached both of my sons through travel ball at the On Deck academy he started in Charlotte, NC) and I can tell you he is one of the best baseball minds I have ever met. Not only that, but he is also a genuinely great person and I have no doubt he is loved by the clubhouse in St. Louis. That said, give him some time and don’t rush him out the door. Let the roster get healthy and make adjustments. I promise it will all work itself out as he absolutely has what it takes to manage at the major league level.
allweatherfan
I’m in the keep Shirley but fire Maddox camp. The pitching just isn’t making any progress.
timyanks
i’m sure the same can be said about matheny. shildt wasn’t the righr manager to begin with.
hollidayfever
He’s a dunce when it comes to in game bullpen and lineup management. He’s basically exactly the same as Matheny in this regard. He follows the same broke ass conventional wisdom as every other old head manager. Intentional BBs are still his thing, even when the numbers say it’s a dumb decision basically every time. He leaves his starters in to get them pitcher wins. He refuses to use his best high leverage relievers unless he has a lead. That’s just the tip of the iceberg.
timyanks
this is why i think the bullpen phone is connected to dewitt. different manager, same results. dewitt, the low profile jerry jones of baseball.
Dorothy_Mantooth
He leaves his starters in so he doesn’t overtax the bullpen, especially early in the season. More managers should take this approach and they may be forced to next year if MLB gets its wish of only carrying a max of 12 pitchers on the active 25 – 26 man roster. He may just be ahead of the curve!
timyanks
pitchers should learn how to pace themselves to be able to go 9 innings, instead of blowing up before the 5th
fitsiqis65
wow, another lumbering always hurt homer or bust righty with sub par D. If I’m Brian Cashman “hell yea baby, sign me up”. But alas I am not an arrogant smug overpaid GM and therefore know he is not what the team needs.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’m not any of that GM stuff, either.
Actually, I’m a pretty crappy GM, serious.
But.
Luke Voit anchoring the clean up spot, & DJ earning some of his money by being a competent lead-off hitter would actually go a long way in righting this offense.
I can’t wait to see Voit back on the field.
Yanks need offense.
He can help.
fitsiqis65
not really- he needed to be flipped this offseason for either a SS or SP, so DJ could move to first where he belongs, and Gleyber could move to 2b where he belongs.
Voit is 100% redundant with judge, stanton, sanchez, so I think we have enough of that nonsense (slow lumbering homer or bust right handed bats that have sub-par D and spend countless time on the IL). Line-up needs diversity.mot duplication.
timyanks
st. louis should hire the other maddux, as in greg
64' Yanks
One reason I like Tommy Pham! He could have a broken arm or leg, he’ll fight you to be in the lineup. And never never mention the DL to him….he’s a gamer.
timyanks
with an attitude that got him shipped out of st louis
