Giants’ right-hander Gregory Santos has been suspended for eighty games after testing positive for the banned substance Stanozolol, Major League Baseball announced this afternoon. He has been on optional assignment to Triple-A Sacramento.
Santos, who entered the season as Baseball America’s #23 prospect in the Giants organization, made his MLB debut in April. He’s appeared in three big league games, tossing two innings of six-run ball. Santos has spent most of the year with Sacramento, where he’s worked to a 5.17 ERA with worse-than-average strikeout and walk rates (20.5% and 12.3%, respectively) across 15 2/3 relief innings.
The River Cats only have 74 games remaining this season, so today’s suspension will end Santos’ 2021 campaign. He’ll be placed on the restricted list, which will open up a spot on the Giants 40-man roster.
Joel Peterson
Hey at least they announced what he actually did this time. Baby steps…..
oldmansteve
Check it out, they announced what illegal substance the guy used. It is almost like in order to prove a guy cheated you have to identify what he did to cheat.
Joel Peterson
Lawyer speak…..lol…….
TonyGwynnSD19
San Francisco….. The land of Birkenstock’s , too many cats in the house and ridiculously annoying Giants fans that still claim Barry Bonds never took steroids
lanceparrishporvida
Hey, he never failed a test!
ftasports
Steroids saved baseball tho
User 4245925809
Well, he could have claimed to have been cleaning up the area of used needles and somehow gotten stuck with 1 that had the substance in it.. it is SF..
Balk
Tony…nice to see your back on a Giants thread, I myself haven’t been on much but I can see your hate for the Giants lives on…have anything good to say about the first place Giants?
giantsphan12
@balk, what I noticed is Tony didn’t say a word about our first-place Giants. His new tactic is to say unbecoming things about San Francisco. Such a classy guy!
Monkey’s Uncle
If those were his numbers with enhanced performance, I’d hate to see his numbers when clean.
RunDMC
What’s league minimum again? $570,500/year?
HalosHeavenJJ
Compare that to AAA income and you can easily see the incentive.
RunDMC
AAA: $700/weekly
Joel Peterson
Yeah that’s true and it’s insane. I make more than that selling old toys. And the team controls when you get called up so even if you are good enough you may not get to be a big leaguer.
zacharydmanprin
Don’t forget health insurance. Imagine having a family to support.
andyhighroller
Yaz is probably the poster child for how bad that whole system is, setup by union players that’d GET deals well into their 30’s, by the time Yaz is a FA, he’ll be at least 34, won ever get paid despite having a top-19 MVP season here and there(hopefully he bounces back to that aaaaaaanyday now, as this season’s.224/.329/.475 w/120ops+ is a far cry from his 2020 of .297/.400/.568 w/161ops+and an 8th place in NL MVP)
ben w.
Farhan gave it to him to open a 40 man spot.
BasedBall
Farhan smeared it on the inside of his cap.
They learned it from Barry Bonds.
fred-3
He found Bonds’ old stash
Fever Pitch Guy
The reason why I don’t look at kids like Santos using PED’s the same way I look at stars like Bonds? Because when you come from poverty and baseball is the only way out, who can blame you? In the DR more than 40% live in poverty and most kids leave school before they turn 15. Getting PED’s is as easy as getting aspirin.
Whereas Bonds was already an established star, already made a ton of money, and used PED’s only because he was jealous of other sluggers and wanted to do better than them.
Joel Peterson
You really gonna tell the story of Barry Bonds, mention he was jealous which is true, and then not mention the guys who were cheating before him Sosa and Mcgwire? Because I don’t think he cheats if they don’t cheat. He was clean for years while they were cheating and getting accolades.
Fever Pitch Guy
Well yeah, of course the other guys were cheating. So of course if they are all cheating, the best clean hitter is gonna be the best on roids. I agree, if they didn’t cheat then he likely wouldn’t have either … because he wouldn’t feel the need to do so.
fred-3
@Joel Peterson
That’s right, but he still cheated. Trevor Bauer used sticky stuff to manipulate the ball when he saw other players doing it but that doesn’t make him innocent or a victim
Joel Peterson
I never said he didn’t cheat. But if you want to single out a player then tell the whole story.
The truth hurts
If you think that kid who hit 49.56,56 and 48 home runs in consecutive years at the height of the steroid era was clean I have a bridge to sell you.
VTGiant
Funny nobody ever talks about Roger Clemen’s roid use?
It’s always Bonds and hitters… no telling how many pitchers were dirty as sin.
SMH

How about Bond’s old stache?
DarkSide830
Can I have a sample to prove myself it was actually stanozolol and the league doesnt have a hit on Santos?
Joel Peterson
Dude you are being a goofball. Two suspensions today. One the league announced the substance used immediately one the league just announced they never checked. That makes sense to you??

oldmansteve
I stand by my ablism comment if you think this is a point… See how they announced what substance he used?
No one thinks its a hit on Santiago either. It has nothing to do with him as a person. It is a lack of care about anyone involved. I’m going to assume you are a child or something. Otherwise, you existing in this world as stupid as you are makes me not want to live on the same planet.
worthington
Convenient timing given the G’s will need about 3 40 man spots. The kid wasn’t going to help them this year.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Well, at least winstrol is a baseball steroid. We’ve seen a couple recent suspensions for equipoise which I’ve always associated with football.
whyhayzee
Steroids are sports related? Geez, I gotta break out the chemistry books. I can’t follow this stuff any more. How about hard work combined with talent? Is that asking too much? I would like our scientists to figure out a cure for cancer instead of coming up with all manner of performance enhancing drugs. Priorities!
ludafish
Most of the known steroids are insanely old. They were either made for animals or actually serve a medical purpose. You think doctors invented steroids for cheating? Are you aware how steroids save lives on a daily basis? I get it they taint baseball. Thinking that the top doctors in the world are sitting there making this stuff with the intention of helping people cheat is ridiculous. Bad take there.
whyhayzee
There’s a fair amount of sarcasm on my post. My dad was a biochemist who ran the lab where the second antibiotic was discovered. He also survived pancreatic cancer. You’re right, steroids have great medical value. I just hate the idea of cheating. It’s total bullspit.

The equation is: (hard work + harder work + talent) × (hard work + PEDs) × Avagadro’s number = The Best Ballplayers Whom Are Also Durable
You can find it in my old college “chemistry” textbook.
I hope you find this helpful, @Whyhazee.
whyhayzee
6.02 times 10 to the 23rd power = the number of stupid things I’ve said in my life. And my name’s not even Avagadro.
Diatribefan
How many moles does that work out to?
Ducky Buckin Fent
Looks like a few other posters took Chem 101 in college…
Colt 45
note to self Stanozolol does not seem to help much
Poster formerly known as . . .
Before I clicked on the Baseball Reference link, I knew the odds favored Santos being from the Dominican Republic, and, sure enough, he is. Apparently the cheating culture in the DR is still going. Since the league started suspending players for PEDs, a hugely disproportionate number of the players caught in the minors and majors have been from the DR.
Years ago, more than one sports news outlet reported on the “buscones” in the DR who juice up young players and train them in return for a cut when they sign. And what was MLB’s response to this? They built baseball academies in the DR.
KirkRueter
As they should dude. DR is really good at baseball.. Cool your jets a bit there, ace.
PutPeteinthehall
If those were his numbers on the juice maybe the name was mentioned so the players know it doesn’t help…
Bochys Retirement Fund
Well at least it opens up a spot on the 40 man.
junkmale
Certainly takes PEDs to put up those MLB/AAA numbers.
Bob333
Bonds led the way next your pitching coach will be gone Bailey king of the sticky what else is he giving the pitchers.Gabe will choke in august like he always does.I give him credit for trying to cheat with his pitchers so he looks good.Gabe is a WEIRDO LOSER you will all see next mont.
missjill2u
Apparently steroids don’t always work
