JUNE 28: Fisher has cleared waivers and been sent outright to Nashville, the team announced. The 27-year-old doesn’t have the requisite service time to reject an outright assignment. He’ll remain in the organization as non-roster depth and attempt to play his way back onto the MLB team before the end of the season.
JUNE 22: The Brewers announced a series of roster moves before tonight’s game against the Diamondbacks, the most notable of which is the designation of outfielder Derek Fisher. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor was activated from the 10-day injured list, while right-hander Ryan Weber was recalled from Triple-A Nashville. The club selected the contract of righty Miguel Sánchez, placed starter Brett Anderson on the 10-day IL with a right knee contusion and optioned reliever Hoby Milner to Nashville.
Fisher, a supplemental first-round pick by the Astros back in 2014, emerged as one of the more well-regarded position player prospects in the organization. The left-handed hitter long drew praise for his combination of raw power and speed, but there were always lingering questions about his hit tool. Indeed, Fisher has been undone by a lofty 35.4% strikeout rate to this point in his MLB career, contributing to a .195/.285/.378 line over 466 plate appearances at the highest level.
Given his obvious physical gifts, Fisher could draw interest from another club via small trade or waiver claim. The 27-year-old is out of minor league option years, though, so any acquiring club would have to keep him on their active roster or again expose him to DFA limbo.
Sánchez, also 27, is now in line to make his MLB debut. A pure reliever, he didn’t appear in affiliated ball until he was 22 years old, but he’s performed fairly well over parts of five seasons in the Milwaukee system. Sánchez has a 3.95 ERA across 84 1/3 innings over parts of three seasons at Triple-A, striking out a decent 24.2% of opposing hitters while walking 9.4%.

Figured there would be moves coming with the bullpen having to cover most of the game yesterday.

Still a better ball player than Mike ever was.
Spike Hyzer
Hoops’ D Fisher was an awful player with ONE TOOL–shooting–and he required very skilled passers and drivers to get open (he never once got open in his entire life, starting with grade school hoops).
I hope you didn’t mean Jordan when you said he was better than Mike.
That’s just high comedy.
Cosmo2
Think the references was to Jordan’s baseball playing. A play on the name Derek Fisher.

This 5 tool player just can’t catch a break
UWPSUPERFAN77
Not a 5 tool guy till you make it in The big Leagues! Good Luck!
Spike Hyzer
You can make it in MLB if you have just 1 or 2 tools that are outstanding (pure speed alone or a power tool can make for a valuable bench piece).
Fisher can’t hit, which makes his power tool valueless. He seems average at best in the field.
He has decent speed and a good arm.
He’s a 2 tool player at best, and those 2 tools are pretty useless when the glove tool is bad.
He may actually be a 0 tool player because he’s so bad at everything that his few good tools are mitigated into having no value!
Cosmo2
Pure speed alone is useless in baseball. If it made a good bench piece Billy Hamilton would stay on a team for more than 5 minutes and he has an additional skill, his glove. Pinch running so rarely favors into wins and losses so makes no sense to keep someone like that on your 26 man.
Spike Hyzer
Hamilton remained on the same roster for the first full 6 YEARS of his contract. Speed WAS historically enough just such a short time ago, and Hamilton didn’t bounce around until the last 3 years (and his actual glove skills were average, but he got to many balls no one would have gotten near)..
That was when advance analytics said that it’s much better to wait for a homer to bring in a couple of runs than to try to steal a base and get 1 run home on a single.
Pin h running doesn’t play into overall strategy much anymore, but I think even the Brewers wish they could have pinch run for Vogelbach the other day and it does still occur in late in games that are tied or close. Because of the home run happy league, there are WAY more boppers who can’t run at all (see: Justin Smoak and Jedd Gyorko on last year’s Brewer roster for reference, guys who were ALWAYS pinch run for late in close games if they got on base and subs at their position hadn’t been exhausted).
And with the runner on 2nd to start overtime these days, a solid pinch runner might still have a place on the 26.
Your argument doesn’t hold much water.
Cosmo2
Hamilton remained for six years because they THOUGHT he was valuable. They were wrong and the league has caught up. You wanna use a 26 man spot for a guy who’s only value comes up in one exact situation (extras)? Seems like a dumb use of resources.
Spike Hyzer
When your hit tool is that bad (high K rate) and your fielding is suspect, it makes you a 3 tool player (and the power tool is meaningless if you can’t put the bat on the ball).
Fisher is a 2 tool player at best.
tonyc-2
You gotta be a good hitter and hit with some power to be a 5 tool player.
I’m hoping he accepts being sent to Nashville. Gotta cut down on the K’s.
bravesfan
Braves need to go grab him ASAP! (If possible). Idc if he’s active roster, I want him as a brave. Unfortunately I envision Drew waters being a lot like him
Naylor01
He’s the worst defensive outfielder I’ve ever seen.
Spike Hyzer
That’s saying a lot considering that Yelich–now playing his best position in LF–still makes pretty easy catches look like adventures.
Billy McKinney made Yelich look like a scrub fielder when he was in LF.
Not sure how Fisher is worse. He’s made some decent plays.
He’s supposed to be a 5 tool player, but I only see 2 decent ones (glove and arm).
its_happening
Fisher and McKinney played together in Toronto. McKinney was ok but Fisher was definitely worse. Something is wrong with Fisher.
Spike Hyzer
Yeah, and now that he’s fully healthy we know what’s wrong: he’s just bad.
tonyc-2
Claiming Fisher was nothing more than Stearns turning stones over looking for a gem in the rough. Any good GM should be doing the same. If Stearns hits on 1 out of 10 waiver or FA acquisitions,.. he’s a hero.

Brewers going through the players to see who can stick. They have a little time with their position to let guys show what they have. Maybe find a diamond in the rough. Patients and not over reacting is the key to a marathon. Oh welcome back Keston after tonight.

Derek Fisher has all the scouting tools but is never going to be a big league player of any caliber. He was scouted as a AAAA player years ago when the Jays traded for him from the Astros.
