3:15pm: The A’s officially announced the pair of moves.
2:47pm: Acevedo is indeed on his way to the big leagues, and Shayna Rubin of the San Jose Mercury News reports (via Twitter) that Jesus Luzardo is being optioned to Triple-A. Luzardo has struggled as both a starter and a reliever this season, posting a 6.87 ERA over 38 innings and surrendering 11 homers in that brief stint on the mound.
7:30am: The Athletics are planning to select the contract of reliever Domingo Acevedo, reports Robert Murray of FanSided (Twitter link). Oakland already has a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so they’ll only need to make an active roster move to accommodate his promotion.
Acevedo began his career in the Yankees organization. He didn’t sign until he was 18 years old (two years later than is typical for international amateur prospects) but he nevertheless quickly became one of the more well-regarded pitchers in the system. He drew praise for mid-high 90’s velocity and decent control but struggled to stay healthy. The 6’7″ righty spent time on the minor league injured list in each season between 2015-19, slowing his progress. Acevedo briefly earned a spot on New York’s 40-man roster but didn’t get into a major league game.
Oakland signed Acevedo to a minors deal over the winter, and he’s gotten off to a fantastic start at Triple-A Las Vegas. Despite pitching in a hitter-friendly environment, Acevedo has worked to a 2.76 ERA across 16 1/3 innings. More impressively, he’s struck out 27 of 64 batters faced (42.2%) while walking just three (4.7%). That strong showing earns him a place on the A’s roster, where he’ll be making his MLB debut if/when he gets into a game.
Luzardo going to AAA?
Gotta be, he’s really out of sorts and definitely has a mechanics issue. Luckily his stuff is still good and he’s getting outs, but his problem is the HR right now. Unfortunately AAA is an even bigger mickey mouse league for offense than MLB is and I’m not sure how sending him to LV is going to help.
If Oakland can get both Luzardo and Puk up and firing and back to normal by September, then add Rosenthal – they might actually make the WS this year
You can send a guy down to work on mechanics without having to put him on a AAA roster…
You can also keep him on the 25 man and do that. Not ideal though.
Or IL him with arm fatigue and work in mechanics that way
“If it’s legal” that killed me haha
You keep using the word literally unnecessarily.
And as usual, you resort to childish name calling.
How old are you? 12? 13?
To be faaaaaair. Your tactics are very similar.
@baseballpunsfatwife7677 – uh, it reads fine to me. If you have something up you, it means something up your….
You are a fool barking on a hill. You continually make an ass out of yourself here and it’s tiresome. You have the type of personality that people emigrate to avoid.
He won’t last long on this forum.
What happened to you A’s Uk fan?…You seemed to have your head screwed on tight a year ago and were one of the better posters here ……
Shame, this board needs more good folks and more good baseball convo ….you have divulged into toxic waste lately and seem too relish it. Hope everything’s Ok in your personal life
There are two different posters.
A’sFaninLondonUK & A’sFaninUK. They are remarkably different from one another. As you have noticed. A’sFaninLondonUK would be welcomed into my home.
Not so with the other.
Anyway. London is awesome.
Don’t hold this guy against him.
This is like the 24th consecutive post that has nothing to do with baseball.
A’sfanUK you are out of your element. If baseball involves kicking the ball then you know more than anyone else here. Until then you were put in your place. Own it.
Oh, you’ll need to block me on all devices and not just one. I know that 100x more than you.
Oooooh, look at the pretty Mute button….
@ Ducky
Ah, thanks Ducky, couldn’t have put it better myself….
@ Cap & Crunch
Alas both A’s fans can’t be alike.
Of course. You’re my guy, @London.
I made the same mistake as @Crunch & others have. Really similar screennames.
Tell ya. That guy is going to ruin your rep, serious.
if you ask me, he probable should be sent to AA instead
Congrats D-Ace. Long time coming
A clear reactionary move to the Wander Franco call-up
Sadly for A’s fans, a better reactionary move to Wander would be to call up Nick Allen, who is a superior defender to Andrus and is slashing .303/.360/.418 at AA currently, which I know isn’t MLB but it can’t translate to anything worse than what Andrus’s woeful .224/.272/.294 line – plus Allen is the best defensive SS in all of baseball and a better baserunner than Andrus too. No matter what Allen hits, his defense will carry him to a +WAR player, unlike Andrus current -0.4.
A’s could stop trolling their fans and give up on that trade already, both Garcia and Andrus are by far the worst two players on the team. Garcia is especially heinous at both catching and hitting – there’s literally dozens of better options out there as a backup C.
Tell me has Nick Allen hit puberty yet? When he does, he’s gunna be a stud.
Bad look for the game to let a pre-pubescent child be the best defensive SS alive 🙂
A’s do have a history of letting small children be superstars though, Sonny Gray was often confused for a batboy in his first couple years, lol
For the last month Andrus is hitting .309/.364/.420. For the season his BABIP is 30 points below his career rate. Which means he dug himself a huge hole and piled on bad luck. But he’s largely pulled himself out of it. If you want to complain go complain about Jed Lowrie. Lowrie has been terrible on defense and with the exception of a 2 week hot streak hasn’t done much other than stink it up at the plate.
Lowrie, Piscotty, Garcia and Andrus need to get off my team!!!
Allen best defensive SS in all of baseball is a bold statement.
If he performs anything like Cole Irvin or Cam Bedrosian maybe Giants fans will shut up about how Farhan is some “genius” for acquiring a bunch of pitchers who are clearly cheating and Mike Tauchman (.558 OPS as a Giant).
Beane+Forst > Farhan all day. Respect the master.
Sounds like you havent had your cuppa yet this morning 😀
You sound like a delusional Giants fan, who despite winning mad titles in the last decade have seen none of their fans rise above the level of “annoying casual”. Love the whole game, not just your fave team!
Why did you come in this post anyway? Acevedo fan?
I’m a baseball fan you flog, you clearly have little man syndrome, you’ve had nothing to cheer about with your team for a long time and it shows, get some sleep
Beane and Forst over Zaidi is true. Can’t deny that one. First good point this year. Well done. Brush your teeth.
Clearly cheating? Do you have anything to back that claim up?
Long established career numbers vs numbers this season.
That’s not really concrete evidence. I could claim that both Irvin and Sean Manea are cheating because both are having great seasons relative to their last few in the majors. Really, only Kevin Gausman is doing way better than anyone would have expected. Guys like Alex Wood, Anthony DeSclafani, and Aaron Sanchez before getting hurt again, were all guys people knew could be good SP’s if they could stay healthy.
The vast majority of pitchers are using. This is like using PEDs in the 80s and greenies in the 60s and 70s, MLB is cracking down and getting as serious as they can.
It doesn’t become cheating until the players consider it cheating. The definition of cheating is gaining an unfair advantage.
That time is approaching.
I don’t disagree with that, but the Giants’ pitchers have average to well below average spin rates on their pitches. I think the most RPM out of Gausman, Aaron Sanchez, DeSclafani, Wood, Cueto, and Webb is Webb’s slider with 2722 RPM this year. Gausman has the most fastball RPM, and is only in the top 53rd percentile. However aside from that, almost none of their pitchers have a pitch they use at least 10% of the time and an RPM around 2500.
You sound very salty, the Giants front office is much better compared to the broke bums in Oakland who have won nothing since color TV was invented. Respect your big brothers.
finally he gets a shot
Good for him!!
He was one of the few Yankee prospects I actually thought was worth a bit of hype. He always had pretty good results in the minors, I wouldn’t be surprised if he still turned into something, health permitting.
Yeesh. What happened to the The Jesus Lizardo?
It’s mechanical and now likely mental. He’s throwing strikes, but the ball goes center-cut every time. Doesn’t matter how hard you throw, how much your slider breaks when the opposition can just stick their bats in the middle of the zone and hammer everything. He’s healthy, there are no hints of injury, he just has to go work it out somewhere. Like someone else mentioned, I might send him to AA, as sending him to Vegas is not going to help his confidence any, that place makes Colorado look like a pitchers park.
A’s to abandon JESUS !!
Lizardo would look good in Pittsburgh wondering what the ask would be
The issue with both Puk and Luzardo are one in the same. Relying too much on 1 pitch while hitters are sitting fastball. When they both have the ability to command their other pitches the heater will be more effective. But neither can stay healthy long enough to develop that rythem. All the best pitchers in baseball rely on their secondary pitches to be effective. But as we all know those pitches especially sliders have varrying degres of ware on the elbow. So it makes me wonder if the A’s are just trying to protect them with the arm injuries feom the past. And due to this it is affecting not just the mechanics but also the mental side of their games.
