The Angels announced that they have designated veteran right-handed reliever Hunter Strickland for assignment. In a corresponding move, the club recalled righty James Hoyt.
Strickland has only been with the Angels for a few weeks, as the team acquired him from the Rays for cash considerations or a player to be named later on May 15. At that point, Strickland owned a stingy 1.69 ERA with a 24.2 percent strikeout rate and a 9.1 percent walk rate in 16 innings, but he was unable to continue that effectiveness as an Angel. The 32-year-old now sports a 4.03 ERA with a 20 percent strikeout rate against a 10 percent walk rate through 22 1/3 frames.
The Angels could find a taker in a trade for Strickland, who has enjoyed a solid career despite recent struggles. Otherwise, considering Strickland has been outrighted in the past and has enough service time, he may elect to test free agency if he doesn’t want to join the Angels’ Triple-A affiliate.
HAHAHAHA
It’s 6 freaking innings. What is this the NFL? And correct me if I am wrong but the Angels pen isn’t that good. Geez people. Show some gosh darn loyalty and commitment and MAYBE it will pay off. This is silly.
He’s a big reason it’s not that good. He’s been terrible
In 6 .1 innings he can’t possibly be a big reason why the Angels bullpen is bad. Because it’s just 6.1 innings…..
Agreed. His attitude must of been not enjoyable I’m guessing. Still has only a 4.09 ERA. not bad Angels should go after him!
6.1 innings in nine appearances… It’s not one bad start.
With the Angels he has a 9.95 ERA and has given up 7 earned runs in 6.1 innings (through 9 games appeared). I’m watching these games; he’s been a gas lamp.
Regarding the desire to keep an aging bullpen arm who is not a fit for this team, what am I missing here??
Cardinals
The Angels really can’t develop or maintain pitching at all.
Shohei may disagree
The Angels didn’t develop Ohtani. He was already an MLB-ready pitcher.
Angels didn’t develop Shohei, and they have done a piss poor job of maintaining him so far.
A lot of jealousy here!
person: says a derogatory comment about another team
fan of other team: gotta be jealously

We have a winner of the daily “Most Random Comment” award!
He’s not wrong here, it happens all the time and in this case it’s absurd. What in the hell do fans of other teams have to be jealous about when it comes to the Angels? Handing out ansurd contracts and never contending or even being fun to watch while they stink up the place every season. Maybe O’s fans or Pirates supporters but if you like any of the other teams there’s no jealousy when it comes to Angels.
Mastershake, you’re so right, nobody likes watching the best player in baseball play. And the greatest show in baseball play in Ohtani. I’d just go back to your cave if I were you.
This is Shohei’s first good season on the mound since they got him, which was 3 years ago.
He’s been only pitched 3 seasons. He only pitched twice in 2020. The other 2 seasons, he’s been insanely good.
He will end up traded even if for cash considerations.
Still a knucklehead, even if he now only sucks while throwing pitches.
Coming in Two Weeks: The Angels Designate James Hoyt for Assignment.
You sir, have won the comment of this post
What’s the prize, a 15% discount on TJ Surgery?
Trade Upton now while he’s hitting. I realize that sounds counterintuitive, but now’s the time to shed that contract for pitching.
He has a full no trade clause – he’d have to waive it first
So, you think he won’t waive it to go to the Yankee’s? Please, like most organizations, they’d just threaten to DFA him and force his hand
MLB isn’t a fantasy league. Modern GMs aren’t going to take on that contact just because Upton’s hitting a little. Everyone sees the same data. The Angels are stuck with Upton until the bitter end.
Yeah, totally agree. Fans think FOs aren’t paying attention and will be fooled into giving up something for Upton, just because he’s on a bit of a streak. FOs know exactly who Upton is, and if any were to trade for the guy, the return would be the same even if he weren’t hitting.
lol, why would anyone want to go the Yankees currently
Brodie Van Wagenen just got another GM gig; he will sign Upton
Nobodies taking Upton’s 28 mill next year to begin with
Your best, and really only bet left , is that Upton saves some juice for next year and they somehow contend while he contributes
Upton is not the problem. He’s not the solution either.
When Marsh is ready, Upton will be out of a job. He’s fine until Marsh gets here.
Enjoy Upton cause he will be there next year too and for $28 million as he will see an increase of $5 million after batting .200 this season.
Actually, Upton in a contract year may get us the best Upton
That is smart thinking, dumping Upton. Thats why it will never happen
Next year maybe Perry the Platypus will turn into Agent P and actually address the bullpen using a better method than hope and pray.
That method doesn’t work and the Angels threw yet another season away hoping and praying.
The Angels are 26th in bullpen ERA, and since this is 2021, and starting pitchers don’t average much more than 5 innings, ERA is relevant.
Another irrelevant piece of news out of the Angels camp… *sigh*
Watch Hoyt’s minor league stats translate into a 6+ ERA MLB tenure.
I seriously don’t understand why the Angels have had such bad pitching for so long. Is Moreno really the problem?
Ah, my bad, apparently I can’t read today, the stats I was reading were major league.. still applies.. he’ll come to the Angels and end up being crap, regardless.
He was crap before he came to the Angels. Many Angel fans didn’t realize it. Go to the original Strickland signing thread.
Yes. Moreno cur scouting abs development to the bone. He even fired all his scouts last year just before the draft.
The result is multiple holes at the major league level each year and no in house talent to fill them.
Add in a limited pitching budget because Arte spends all the money on bats and you have the last decade of Angels baseball.
Yep
Perry was not the G. M. to have signed. Still the Angels do not have a pitching coach (just an interim P. O. S. ). He literally destroyed a so-so bullpen and gave the Angels the worst in the league.
Not a fan of Eppler, but the bullpen would not be this bad if they kept him.
eppler only wanted hard throwing bull pen pitchers it worked for a while but then the next season they all got hurt.
I was screaming for Matt Arnold or Billy Owens. Still wondering how we ended up with Perry.
I normally don’t get on GMs. But when a mistake is so obvious, and so easy to address, such as adding bullpen blocks, he deserves all the attacks.
This was the most incompetent off season I can remember. Sheer stupidity.
How much sense does it make to bring up a guy who currently has a 13.06 ERA in AAA?
Strickland has issues. Started with the Giants and it has continued. Fast ball is fast but without movement.
it is fast and he hits inside the zone with it, when you have a ++ fastball you need to either be able to spot it in and out, have movement on it or have another pitch that sets it up well or the more guys see you the easier it is to time you and you are just giving them the power to drive the ball further
In 6 .1 innings he can’t possibly be a big reason why the Angels bullpen is bad. Because it’s just 6.1 innings…..
Hard to say, what with the expected pitching coach suspended. Gotta be a bit chaotic, which is what we’re seeing on the transaction wire. Given the situation, the Angels should just settle on a group of pitchers and ride them through thick or thin. A real improvement of the staff should be left to the off-season when the situation is clearer. It’s not even a given that Maddon returns.
Over the last 2 years, Strickland has gone from the M’s to the Nat’s, released by them, on to the Mets, then the Rays, and finally the Angels in May. 6;1 innings may have been a short look, but he’s had plenty of chances.
I’m guessing they saw Strickland as not being part of the Angels going forward, and are now looking at anyone who might be. Hoyt’s call up is probably just an audition. They’re not not going anywhere this year, so why not look for some diamonds in the rough?
The very best subtraction for the Angels to make is Maddon. Start there and try to make some off season moves. For the rest of this season make Maddon sit by the phone during any Ohtani starts so the front office can call him when it’s time to remove Ohtani from the game. Otherwise you’re looking at another major injury. He was already left in one start when he lost velocity during the game. The Angels got Maddon after Theo fired him. Say what you want about an expired contract. Maddon was told there would be no renewal offer.
Was solid for the Rays before they flipped him. Wouldn’t be surprised if he clears waivers and elects free agency only to go back Tampa.
The rays get him back for free. He has eight good games and they trade him again.
The Rays only get him back if no trade is in the works, he get waived, and every other team in the AL passes on him. I could be wrong, but my guess is, if every AL team does pass, so will the Rays.
Not surprised by this move one bit. I had high hopes of Strickland bringing some stability in an unstable bullpen with the likes of Mayers and Sledgers. But Strickland has been a major disappointment and allowed runs in every appearance, it seemed. I would have preferred to see the Halos stick with him just a tad longer to see if he could turn it around, after all, it’s not like they have better options.
Honestly after the Rays traded for JP don’t know if they would bring back Strickland. Maybe he can do to the minors but don’t think they have a spot on current roster. Also Chaz Roe is starting his rehab
Typical Angels luck. Puts on their uniform and gets hammered
As a Giants fan I think Strickland is a problem for any team taking a flyer. He held a grudge against Bryce Harper, because Harper yanked his very hittable FB in the 2014 NLDS. He somehow got the win in that game despite blowing the save.
He intentional plunked Harper 2 years later in 2016, leading to a brawl in which both Hunter Pence and Mike Morse wound up being injured. Morse’s concussion effectively ended his career. It was just stupid and selfish, and I was more than happy when the Giants let him go.
I don’t root for guys to fail, even an arch-rival like any Dodger player. I want to see every Dodger player on the field with every Giants player. But I will make an exception in Strickland’s case.
The rays literally make a joke out of this league front office wise
WOOOT!!!! ADIOS
Cardinals, Cubs possibly
If he has legs and can throw the Reds should bring him in
On his first day with the team, the Angels call on Hoyt in the ninth inning with an 8-3 lead over the Royals. His first batter is Jorge Soler, who he promptly hits in the helmet. If this keeps up, someone’s gonna wind up getting Hoyt.
HaHa
Anthony Rizzo drops Manny Machado’s foul pop in the eighth inning, giving Manny another chance. Everyone can guess what happened on the next pitch, right?
Under current ownership this organization has never valued pitching, It’s always make a big splash with a Pujols , Trout, Redon, Great players but they don’t pitch Weaver was the last SP that was good and were a long way from Scott Shields & Troy Percival in the bullpen. The Angel’s keep buying cheap and selling even lower.
Woody you forgot Josh Hamilton but great point
Colon and Wilson. Twice they gotten the #1 free agent pitcher on the market. That’s better than all but a few teams. Three if you include Ohtani.
It also went after Greinke and Haren.
Never? You people kill me.
Not talking just about free agents, All of the consistent teams in contention have good bullpens & at least two top starting pitchers, I guess being happy with a steady 80 wins a year is good enough for some Halo Homer’s
You just made that up. The Angels need to build a bullpen. They consistently ignore that. They try to get starting pitching. Unlike bullpen blocks, starting pitching blocks are hard to acquire and develop. But the Angels have tried, you said they Never.
You made that up as well.
Your very, very sensitive Halo Homer I said they have never valued pitchig that’s my opinion and the players they have brought up or signed have proved that I have been following them alot longer than you I am sure of that,Saw, Chance, Wright, & Ryan,Messersmith,Autry & Mickey Mouse valued Pitching
Moreno does not maybe if Moreno had your had your passion we would be playing meaningful games now
Who is Halo Homer? Your opinion is not backed up by facts.
I am guessing your facts are as Biased as you are Hal Homer
As long as we are forming opinions not based on data, I think
Mike Trout was born on Mars.
And if the best you got is trying to pervert someone’s screen name, you got nothing. But unlike your opinion, that opinion is based on facts.
Keep making stuff up, that’s. all you got.
You really need to get some help halo homer your one of those that always have to get in the last word and everything you say is right according to you, It must be tuff being you, I will say you are entertaining quite a few of us the over/under on your responses just made me $50 thanks
Word
I’m happy to supplement your unemployment check.
Hunter Strickland is one of my least favorite baseball players. He’s an angry man-child and not a team player imho
