The Angels claimed Jack Mayfield off waivers from the Mariners, per announcements from both teams. Los Angeles has optioned Mayfield to Triple-A Salt Lake. The Angels already had a vacancy on the 40-man roster, so no other move was necessary.
Seattle designated Mayfield for assignment earlier this week. The utilityman now heads back to Los Angeles, where he began the 2021 season. The Angels acquired Mayfield from the Braves in exchange for cash considerations back in February but designated him for assignment two months later. Seattle claimed the 30-year-old off waivers, but his stint in the Mariners organization comes to an end after just over a month.
Mayfield has appeared in the big leagues in each of the past three seasons, spending the entirety of his time in the AL West. He broke in with the Astros in 2019 and has seen the briefest of time with the Angels and Mariners this season. He’s done very little offensively at the highest level, hitting just .168/.195/.259 across career 150 plate appearances. Nevertheless, his combination of defensive versatility and roster flexibility (he has a pair of minor league option years remaining) has continued to generate interest from teams.

I don’t know if this is just a random thing, but it seems like a lot of players are getting passed back and forth between teams on waivers this year. Jacob Nottingham is the most well known example with the Brewers and Mariners. Deivy Grullon has been passed between the Mets and Rays. Now Jack Mayfield with the Angels and Mariners.
echozulu88
I think Adam Rosales was claimed back and forth between Texas and Oakland like 3+ times in one season a few years ago.
johnnyangel
Yes! It was 2013.
A’s start of season until Aug 2
Rangers until Aug 8

No. Just no.
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Angels looking good on this streak…Loving J Up in the leadoff, Rendon getting hot… Starting pitching goin deeper…
Everything looking good…Now if they can just figure out how to void the contract of commentator Daron Sutton so we don’t have to listen to his nasally voice and preschool level analysis…then I’ll be truly thrilled…
Daron Sutton is the worst!!
#DaronSuttonSucks
Redstitch108* 2
Totally agree on Daron Sutton. It’s truly awful to watch a game where he is on. My head hurts every time! FYI, no one gives a crap about spin rate, launch angle and the scientific method of how everything happens in baseball! We just want to relax and chill while watching the Halos. Great permanent team would be Gubie and Langston on TV. See SF Giants Kruk and Kuip for an example how that works—two former players chit chattin and making it fun. Please get rid of Sutton and that other utter annoyance that is Roger Lodge! Ugggh!
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Thaaaank you…Finally someone agrees about him….Dude, just shut up and let me watch the game in peace…
I liked Victor Rojas man, him and Gubie would chat a lot too, but it was pertinent and their commentary was subtle and not overwhelming the game…
Sutton has that weird lisp too..
He is just plain awful!!
Tony Carbone
Not as bad as Goldsmith from the Mariners.
SoCalAngelsFan75
All subjective. I prefer Sutton over Vasgersian. Sounds like a generic Sunday night baseball broadcast with Matt V.
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Then you must be deaf, or some young person who likes to hear people talk over the actual game…
It’s not subjective…some commentators are just terrible…Daron Sutton is terrible.. Objective Fact
MrAngelFan
Totally agree. I have never seen a worst play by play guy than Daron Sutton. I like Gubicza, though he tends to not be harsh even when the player flat out stinks.
amk1920
Call up Adell already
Halo11Fan
Not ready. Needs to make more contact… but he’s not that far away.
trout27
Actually, the Angels want him to work on his defense since he is now playing CF. His K-Rate is still high but he is making a lot of hard contact. He might get the call yp after the break.
PutPeteinthehall
Things looking up for next season. Another man at the helm will certainly help. Hope they are calling the shots when Ohtani pitches from upstairs. Doubt Angels will be able to get a wildcard this season. Watch Maddon get sent packing at seasons end.
Redstitch108* 2
Maddon finally has these guys playing better. Don’t think he’s going anywhere for now. It’s all about pitching, and Halos just don’t have it. It’s unfortunate.
taco guy
LAA playing well while Trout is out injured. He’ll be the best mid-season pickup there is.
Mayfield is just a guy, but Perry thinks he’s cute.
Halo11Fan
Imagine where the Angels would be if they solved the sixth spot in the rotation in-house and spent the Cobb money on relief pitching…. Great job Perry the platypus..
angelsfan4life
Solve the 4,5, and 6th spots. And at least two BP pitchers
Halo11Fan
The rotation is not nearly as big of an issue as the defense and bullpen
With Rendon and Iglesias back, the defense is not as big of a problem as it was a few weeks ago.
bkbk
The defense has been by far and away the biggest problem. Its not even particularly close.
HalosHeavenJJ
Or the Q money. Unreal how badly he fell off. Losing Garrett Stallings in trades with Baltimore looks like it’s going to hurt too.
Defense is night and day better now. Walsh moving to first significantly upgraded two spots. Lagares has always been a stud in center. Fletch health, Rendon and Iglesias playing back to normal standards.
MrAngelFan
@Halo11Fan Cobb contract is $15 million, but $10 million is being paid by Baltimore. Don’t look now but Iglesias, Mayers, Cishek, Clausio, Watson, and Rodriguez all have ERA+ over 100. Are the Scot Shields and Frankie Rodriguez? No, but they have been better lately. Are they improved or is it because they have played some poor hitting teams lately? We will see.
SwingtheFNbat
The BP, Shhhhh! Be quiet, don’t wake up the grumpy old goat Halo11. He thinks they were the main reason why they were stinking, not true! All 4 phases had there hand in that, mainly SP’s and D….
There starting to put it all together now, hopefully they keep it going. Light it up!
Halo11Fan
Go look what I wrote all off season. I said time and time again, By June they’ll figure it out, and by that time they’ll throw away a lot of games they didn’t have to.
Go pull up the Gurrera thread, or just about any bullpen thread. Or Cobb thread, or Quintana thread. They should have kept Jones and spent that five million on the bullpen.
SwingtheFNbat
Lmao at Halo11, at your figuring out. In case you failed to realize, which is normal for you. THE back end and main guys in the pen are all the same. Figuring it out? Hahaha! Try the SP’s are finally pitching around 6 innings, and the pen is not being over used and leading MLB in innings pitch. FYI, except the Rays, who use openers all the time.

Geno55
The angels office has been very productive The defense is pretty decent let’s see if the angels pick up some acquisitions at the trading deadline
HalosHeavenJJ
Angels pitching improvement and the defensive improvement are definitely related.
The schedule in June is a lot kinder than it was in May but it gets tough again soon.
MrAngelFan
In spite of the horrible pitching, bad fielding (most errors in baseball), and injuries to Stassi, Rendon, and Trout, somehow the Angels are over .500.
SwingtheFNbat
You got that right, the Angels should feel fortunate to be at where there at right now. With to be nice, bellow average SP, BP, D, and mediocre hitting. You also can say the hitting has been as big as a disappoint as any group, simple because they were expose to carry this club and be elite. Let’s get Trout back and still they maybe can.
The formula the Angels had to win the west was, excellent hitting and D, with mediocre SP and RP’s. That said, all 4 phases are underachieving. With all that said, you got to love .500 ball right now. Light it up!
MrAngelFan
I would say that D has been the biggest disappointment. I did not expect pitching to be very good since it does not look good on paper, so it is pretty much expected. The Angels do have some good fielders. The high error total is in large part due to Iglesias. He only played in 52 games and already has made as many errors this season as he had in any full season.
SwingtheFNbat
Your right MrAngelsFan, The D is the most disappointing part so far. With better health in the 2nd half hopefully, the D should be awesome, and what they were projected to be.
stymeedone
@swingthefnbat
What would you rather have? The Angels winning or Trout in the lineup? Could they be mutually exclusive?
SwingtheFNbat
Of coarse winning is most important, but having the best player in game not in there, hurts all of MLB, and the Angels win percentage.
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Without Trout, the Angels have been forced to play better…Soooo, when he returns, hopefully the good swings that the lineup has been taking will not disappear…I’m hoping for that!!
stymeedone
Can’t say it hurts their winning percentage this year. They are playing better with him gone. Oakland and Tampa don’t have the big contracts, but just keep winning. Maybe, just maybe, its not the surrounding cast that’s the problem, but rather that an elite talent has a negative effect on the team concept.
SwingtheFNbat
Your absolutely crazy to think there not a better team with Trout on the field. The reason why there winning is primarily improved pitching and D. That said, coupled with it is the weakest part in there schedule.
