The Yankees placed Justin Wilson back onto the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain, per the team. Deivi Garcia was recalled to make a spot start for the Yankees.
There could be some long-term opportunity for Garcia to stick in the rotation, given the injury to Corey Kluber. The 21-year-old hasn’t been all that sharp through four starts in Triple-A, however, walking more than 17% of enemy combatants. He has one big league start so far this season, a four-inning outing against the Orioles late in April.
Wilson, meanwhile, was attempting to work through a hamstring issue. Through 15 appearances, however, he was clearly being affected. His 6.08 ERA/6.79 FIP through 13 1/3 innings are far higher than we’ve come to expect from the veteran southpaw. His 19.7 percent strikeout rate would be his lowest such mark for his career.
Another Yankee southpaw is on the comeback trail. Zack Britton is beginning a rehab assignment in Double-A, the team notes. Britton has yet to appear this season. Britton has been a huge piece of the Yankees’ late-game calculus for the past two and a half seasons.
Buckner
Have a bad game, and this is what the Yankees do. Disable, err, injury list.
Because there MUST be something wrong with you.
Fever Pitch Guy
Or in his case, a bad season.
pbfog
Wow, you’re so informed
Fever Pitch Guy
Who is misinformed? Not sure if addressed to me, but fact is he’s got a 1.39 WHIP since 2018 and has changed teams FIVE times since 2015. That’s what happens when you’re not that good.

I’m not a Wilson fan, but being traded isn’t always an indication of poor performance. Trevor Bauer has pitched for three different teams in three years and he’s been pretty good.
LordD99
Or, there was something wrong with him.
jdgoat
The Jays have been doing the same thing lol. If you have a bad game, it must be do to soreness, right?
Fever Pitch Guy
Sounds like just a way to create some roster space. If not, thoughts and prayer for a speedy recovery.

Yankees spent a fortune and nothing to show for it… couldn’t happen to a nicer team
mrmackey
They would be in the playoffs if the season ended today.
Poster formerly known as . . .
That won’t last. They’re 12-16 against the AL East and they have 48 more games within the division, and Kluber’s gone for a good long while (and the recent record of Yankee pitchers rehabbing has not been good)..
CravenMoorehead
The Yankees clearly managed to occupy rent free space in your head though. Like you said, “nothing to show for it”.
Ronk325
@Craven, I laughed way too hard at that. One of the best insults I’ve seen in a while
pinstripes17
Wilson is getting paid peanuts, nice try tho! Also, the Yankees are a playoff team as we speak. jealousy is a disease.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yanks are *always* in the playoffs.
Will be this year again. Next year too.
Repeat ad infinitum.
But we surely appreciate your concern.
Salvi
Im jealous of the 1950’s Yankees or the 70-80’s Yankees. Nothing to be jealous of in this century. Lots of money, followed by lots of hype, followed by lots of disappointment. Not seeing much different this year.
Also, Would take 4 last place finishes and a World Championship over making the playoffs every year, only to let everyone down.
Captain-Judge99
@giants51- yankees spend a fortune, but are still under the luxury tax. Smh

In fairness, when your payroll is $201,794,226, the second-highest of the 30 teams, you don’t have much of a point with that argument.
whyhayzee
If he’s on the injured list, who’s going to talk to him over the fence?
ArianaGrandSlam
How about putting him on the DFA list?
YankeesBleacherCreature
Wilson has had a pretty good career track record and he’s been bad in his 13.1 IP so far this season. I think he’ll bounce back to be more in line with his career norms. It’s just that I wouldn’t place him right now in games in high leverage situations like last night.. Britton makes 4.5x of Wilson’s salary and is only a tick better than him.
exrobinsoncanofan
Yes, but it’s a giant tick…
YankeesBleacherCreature
Agreed. Career 3.04 ERA/139 ERA+ vs 3.35 ERA/121 ERA+
karldanger
Wilson has been solid and pretty dependable throughout his career but Britton is one of the best relievers in the game
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah.
This makes a ton of sense. Something was obviously amiss with him. Tried to pitch through it. So respect for that.
Take some time, rest up, get right.
Come back in a few weeks & be the guy he’s always been. That’ll play.
Go Yanks.
dave frost nhlpa
Your career is headed to the Independent League after the Mets cut you,not to the Yankees.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Oddly, Wilson has never been released once in his career.
Ronk325
I don’t think Garcia is just up for a spot start, he’s probably taking Kluber’s rotation spot
YankeesBleacherCreature
Only if pitches well up here. They don’t want to rattle his confidence if he gets knocked around. He’s part of the long-term plans so he’ll get baby-ed very much like Florial. Perhaps even more.
Ronk325
Unless Garcia completely bombs I think he gets the majority of the starts in Kluber’s place. His numbers haven’t been great in AAA but he’s still the best option they have until at least mid July
YankeesBleacherCreature
I think I’m looking towards September and the years ahead. Just want him up for good. The Yankees have enough AAAA guys to play the hot hand.
StudWinfield
I would agree there. Garcia and King are really the only 2 rotation options right now. Schimdt still not throwing off mound yet and it’s early for Gil’s debut.
Would not be surprised if we see AAAA types like Koerner, Keller or Goody get opportunities.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I wouldn’t mind it if they went the opener route again with Greene.
Oxford Karma
He might have pitched his last game with the Yankees. Leutge and Peralta have been significantly better. When Britton comes back, Wilson seems repetitive.
LordD99
They can keep him on the IL this time until he’s fully healthy. Injuries being as prevalent as they are, they’ll likely be an open spot for him in a few weeks.
tim815
Is Garcia the guy for the next 8 weeks?
If not, which internal option is?
If none of them are, then who’s the best trade option?
YankeesBleacherCreature
None? Pitching isn’t the issue right now. It’s most of the offense.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Wretched game, man. Deivi was in trouble all day & the offense is – again – offensive to watch.
Man. & I hurried back from an afternoon meeting to catch that game.
Poor life choice, it appears.
So.
I’m going rock dove hunting.
whyhayzee
Does every major league player have a hamstring issue? Man, what is going on? What a mess.
BobGibsonFan
Tigers take 2 from the mighty Yankees. LOL
BobGibsonFan
DJ LeMahieu picked an excellent time to have a career year. 5 more years of a league average infielder at 15 mil a year.
BobGibsonFan
Do Garcia’s stats count as major league stats? He pitched to a AAA lineup.
costergaard2
TC, enemy combatants ? It’s not Falluja, it’s only baseball. They’re athletes, not service members = )

It’s a good thing that Cashman let the Red Sox pick up Garrett Whitlock in the Rule 5 draft because it was imperative that he make roster space for Jay Bruce.
Whitlock’s ERA+ is only 239 and his ERA is an unsightly 1.85.
Poster formerly known as . . .
From the official Yankees site:
“Wilson has been dealing with discomfort in his right hamstring for a few weeks, according to manager Aaron Boone, who said that it seemed to be a minor issue that the left-hander wanted to pitch through.”
Then why did you send him out in the 10th inning to hold a 1-run lead when you knew he was hurting (allegedly) and gave up a home run in his previous outing?
CaptainThurman
Would someone please inform law enforcement authorities that some criminal stole the Yankees’ bats and replaced them with rolled up beach towels? Urgent!
