11:34 am: O’Day will be shut down from throwing for a few weeks, manager Aaron Boone told reporters (including Kristie Ackert of the New York Daily News).
9:15 am: The Yankees are placing righty reliever Darren O’Day on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 30, with a right rotator cuff strain, the team announced. Fellow righty Michael King has been recalled from the alternate training site in a corresponding move.
New York signed O’Day to bolster their already-strong bullpen over the winter. The submariner enjoyed a pair of highly-productive seasons with the Braves from 2019-20 and has continued to pitch well (albeit not quite at his Atlanta level) in New York. O’Day has made ten appearances and worked nine innings, allowing three runs on eight hits (including a homer) and a pair of walks with nine strikeouts. The team did not provide a timetable for his potential return.
With O’Day on the shelf, the Yankees bring back King, who has gone back-and-forth between Yankee Stadium and the alternate training site over the past two seasons. Altogether, King has compiled a 5.22 ERA/4.42 SIERA over 39.2 MLB innings. The 25-year-old has yet to allow a run through eleven frames of long relief this year, but his ordinary strikeout and walk rates (21.4% and 9.5%, respectively) are virtually unchanged from last season.
The Yankees are off to a 12-14 start, but that underwhelming performance hasn’t been the fault of the bullpen. New York relievers have league-best marks in ERA (2.24), SIERA (2.90) and K% minus BB% (22.7 points).

Rotator cuff issue? Looks like Cash rolling the dice on a 36 year old journeyman reliever was a misstep.
Joe says...
You mean that guy they gave a whole 1.75 million to?
Ducky Buckin Fent
I think the categorization of “journeymen” is a bit strong as well. The guy’s been an All Star & (throwing out a lost year due to injury) has performed at a high level every season for over a decade.
Certainly not the term I’d’ve used.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Career stats be damned.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Absolutely.
Throw out those career earnings of $49MM too.
BrittinghamSports
The Yankees actually guaranteed O’Day $2.45 million. The Yankees have a $700k buyout on his $1.4 million player option for next season as well. My guess is O’Day exercizes his option and the Yankees buy him out and just pay him the extra $700k to leave. O’Day has been extremely injury prone the last several seasons. He had surgery when he was with the Orioles. Then he had a long term forearm injury with the Braves. Now it’s his rotator cuff with the Yankees. He can’t eat many innings anymore and when I watched him it looked like he was getting hitters to swing at pitches outside of the strike zone because he had problems even staying inside the zone. Add all that up with the fact that next season O’Day will be in his 40’s in terms of age… It doesn’t look good. A lot of people thought the Braves should have picked up his $2-3 million option. I was actually glad when they didn’t. I would have much rather have kept Shane Green and he couldn’t even get a contract. Why would anyone guarantee a darn near 40 year old injury prone O’Day $2 and a half million when Greene is still out there and clearly won’t get close to that?
APD
Greene must be asking for 3 or 4 times more than that (ay least) or he would already be signed, it’s my guess
WideWorldofSports
i guess not surprising considering how he throws.
CVW
It really has nothing to do with the way he throws.
GareBear
I think O’Day may be the most under-appreciated reliever in the game right now. His whole career has been excellent and he has rarely been injured. In a world of volatile relievers he has been consistently superb with very little fan fare.
SoxRewl
Agreed. One of the few things going right in that Yankees pitching staff this season too
whyhayzee
Joe Smith is the all-time under appreciated bullpen master. O’Day has been good as well.
DarkSide830
its amazing Smith is still comfortably 1st in games pitched amongst aactive players despite having not played last year. wild.
whyhayzee
O’Day is a STOGY. Submarine two out guy. Smith is a SAFIGY. Side arm full inning guy.
YankeesBleacherCreature
What do you call Pat Venditte?
whyhayzee
SLORGY – Sometimes lefty occasionally righty guy
bravesninersnation
Sorry for the out of topic post but- will there be an article talking about Roberto Alomar?
notagain27
I hope not! Isn’t there enough crap going on in this world where we don’t have to talk about it on this website? Let’s keep our eyes on the ball here please.
Joe says...
Notagain.. Well it is baseball news. I doubt the comments section would be open, but it is worth noting it happened.
bravesninersnation
Sorry guys I don’t mean to be annoying- I just want details of the story and know what happened.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Hit up the Google, bro.
When you get to the the “e” in Roberto it pops right up in a few places.
Yeah, it’s baseball news.
But I don’t see how it would really be applicable at MLBTR. He retired in ’04. So whatever BS he pulled has no bearing on baseball transactions which is – more or less – the wheelhouse over here.
YankeesBleacherCreature
I don’t think we’ll ever get the full details since there is a protected victim involved. And everything that happened thus far happened after he was inducted into the HOF.
Ducky Buckin Fent
D’accord, @BleacherCreature, & that is all completely understandable.
I just don’t really see this as something the staff over here have much (any) responsibility to present.
Even ignoring the “politics” involved this isn’t their thing. Go to ESPN.
CravenMoorehead
O’Day won’t be “day to day” with a rotator cuff ailment
mlbnyyfan
Cash had to take a risk after somehow convincing Boston to take Otto contract. I liked the signing. Now it’s time for others to step up. I’m more concerned about Schmidt. TJ could be in his future.
CravenMoorehead
Hopefully Britton comes back healthy and locked in. They could use him rn.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Might not be all that long, @Moorehead.
Cortisone.
I have a bunch of “fraying” (what the doc calls it) in mine. Get a couple shots a year. The only times I ever notice it is when I’m due for my next injection. Which, btw, are not fun at all.
Captain-Judge99
mlbnyyfan- yes,I like O’Day. He is a lot better then I expected. Hopefully he’ll be alright. Schmidty is fine. He already had TJ before we drafted him out of South Carolina, so he should be ok. Hey Brother, no worries we’re starting to win now. Voit should be on his way back.
pasha2k
Cashman had a few alternatives to take Ottos place n not the money. Both teams did each other a favor. That’s how trades supposed to be.
ak7721
Michael King is better anyway. This was a blessing in disguise.
Very Barry
The Yankee’s are a dumpster fire right now. Brian Cashman has been beyond awful!! Is anybody gonna be surprised when Cashman’s next move is signing Bartolo Colon???
Ducky Buckin Fent
Brian Cashman: 22 years as GM in which he’s never had a losing record, won four World Series, a couple spare pennants, & has missed the postseason merely thrice.
His résumé dwarfs that of most GM’s.
Rick Hahn – for example – would kill to have that much success.
Interesting definition of “awful!!” [Sic].
Not just “anybody” would be shocked, bro.
That would be “everybody” with an average (or better) IQ.
Now acknowledging that, your erstwhile “take” really says a lot about you.
nyy42
you are delusional
