The Rockies have placed shortstop Trevor Story on the 10-day injured list with right elbow inflammation, retroactive to yesterday. Matt Adams has been reinstated from the injured list to take his roster spot, per the team.
Story’s health will now be a top article for the Rockies moving forward. This is an injury he dealt with back in 2018, notes Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. There’s plenty of time to get him back into the lineup to prove his health before peak trade season, however. The Rockies, of course, have to consider their trade options for Story, a free agent at the end of the season. His numbers are down a touch thus far with a triple slash line of .255/.322/.424 through 205 plate appearances, though there would still be plenty of interest should the Rockies ultimately decide to deal their franchise player. In the meantime, Brendan Rodgers steps in at short in what could prove to be an audition for the role in the long-term.
Adams, 32, returns to his role primarily as a bopper off the bench. “Big City” hasn’t had much opportunity since slugging 20 home runs for the World Champion Nationals in 2019. He has stepped to the plate just 72 times between this year and last for the Braves and Rockies, respectively. In total, Adams has just two long balls in that span with a .162/.208/.279 slash line.
Lucas Gilbreath has also been recalled to serve as the 27th man for today’s doubleheader, notes Fangraphs’ Roster Resource architect Jason Martinez. The 25-year-old southpaw has an 8.59 ERA over 7 1/3 innings this season, the first Major League action of his career.

I need more Story on this.
Fever Pitch Guy
It’s a sad story when the “franchise player” has a career .247/.314/.440 away from Coors.
He’s gonna be a hard sell as a free agent with that 224-point OPS differential on the home/road split.
MasterShake
Especially with the lolmets out of the market.

I know Arenado’s splits weren’t as extreme, but so many people were saying that he’d tank once leaving Coors. He currently has the best single season wRC+ of his career so far, and an almost identical slashline to what he did during his entire time with Colorado.
Fever Pitch Guy
I think just 26 road games makes it a bit premature to come to any conclusions about Arenado.
Joel Peterson
Yeah I agree. In my opinion Arenado is a spitting image of Matt Holliday and his situation. Both good players who hit a few more homers because of Coors but still good players. And if Arenado can be that guy that’s terrific he doesn’t need to be better than he was.
pinstripes17
Just like how Nolan Arenado and DJ LeMahieu completely fell off and tanked after leaving Coors, right?
mlb1225
The Coors affect is overblown imo. LeMahieu and Arenado are just a few of the Rockies’ good hitters who have performed well once getting traded or signing with a new team. Matt Holliday, Dexeter Fowler, Ellis Burks, Corey Dickerson, Chris Ianetta, all found success with other teams once leaving Colorado.
Cosmo2
Part of the “Coors effect” can be managed by a player after they leave. For example, they get used to seeing more breaking balls that actually break. So the disparity in home/away is mitigated once they’re on a different team.
Mynameisnoname
Exactly. So much is known about Coors effect on spin and some people still can’t figure out once the variable is removed (playing half of total games at Coors), the player will no longer have to make drastic adjustments leading to much more neutral splits.

The injury sounds like a cover Story

Story pun

Storyed history.
Gwynning
Hopefully Story is ok to come back soon, you’d hate to see the Rox lose another trade (before it even happens…)
Joe says...
And now you know the rest of the story.
Only old people will get this one.

Good day.

@Joe
Thats not true! Unless early 30s is old! (Although some days I feel 80)
AHH-Rox
Rockies are collecting first basemen like the Reds are with 3B. I just hope they don’t try to put Adams in the OF at Coors.
bigdaddyk
How do you out tank the pirates but your best hitter on the DL before your series against them
Datashark
The inquiries on Story just jumped. If Rodgers does good expect a trade once this Story returns

You have hit the nail on the head!!! Just like with the Cardinals Shortstop—- Paul DeJong— who is currently on the 10-Day IL.
A younger-Cheaper short stop (Sosa) has been filling in for DeJong. Quite adequately
I might say too!! Hitting over .320 and errorless fielding in DeJong’s absence.
The timing is most unfortunate for DeJong!!!
He’s currently having a down year batting average wise. HR’s and RBI’s are okay. But—— Sosa has turned some heads in St. Louis.
Wheels are turning concerning DeJong as a possible trading piece! Plus—— he’s under friendly contract for a lot less money than it would cost a team for Storey, Lindor, etc!!!

I just realized what Montfort meant by 94 wins. That is his predicted total of 2020 and 2021, I still think he will come up short,
Orel Saxhiser
Dismal performance getting shut out in both Saturday games against the Pirates.
A tough blow for the Rockies is the rapid decline of Charlie Blackmon. In his last 80 games through Saturday, he’s batting .221 with a slash of .337/.312./.649. Blackmon turns 35 on July 1 and is owed $21M in 2022 and $10M in 2023. Untradeable.

That’s why signing guys to big money into their thirties is generally a bad idea

Yep, just ask Detroit.
