The Red Sox announced Friday that they’ve selected the contract of infielder/outfielder Danny Santana from Triple-A Worcester. To create a spot on the 40-man roster, right-hander Austin Brice was designated for assignment.
It was reported yesterday that Santana, who had a Sunday opt-out clause in his minor league contract, would be joining the Red Sox at some point this weekend. We took a lengthier look at how he might fit into the mix at the time, but suffice it to say he’ll join Enrique Hernandez and Marwin Gonzalez as yet another highly versatile option who can be deployed just about anywhere on the diamond by skipper Alex Cora.
The switch-hitting Santana had a pair of excellent seasons — one with the Twins, one with the Rangers — but struggled in his other five seasons at the MLB level. His 2020 season was cut short by an elbow injury that required surgery, and his 2021 campaign was delayed by a foot infection that also required surgery.
Brice, 28, had a nice 2019 season with the Marlins (3.43 ERA, 44 2/3 innings), but he’s been hit hard in each of the past two seasons with the Red Sox. He’s tallied a total of 31 1/3 frames with Boston but managed only a 6.94 ERA with far too many walks and home runs allowed. Brice, who has a 5.18 ERA in 160 Major League innings, will either be traded or placed on outright waivers within the next week. He has enough service time to reject an outright assignment if he goes unclaimed, but doing so would mean forfeiting the remainder of this year’s $870K salary, so he’d surely accept an assignment to Worcester.

About time they got Brice off the roster

So happy! This was the best case scenario after seeing Marwin was in tonight’s starting lineup

Franchey could’ve been sent down. No tears for him.
MafiaBass
They needed to make a 40-man roster move in addition to the 25-man. I would suggest that he goes down when Arroyo comes back.
soxshortstop
Brice should have been saved for another upcoming necessary move. Brice will make it through with a 6.94 ERA and be sent to Worcester. Franchy was the logical choice to go down and get the everyday at bats. I agree that Marwin is on DFA watch. AC keeps going to him….Chavis 2-4 last night and he still brought in Marwin to replace Chavis hmmmmmm
MafiaBass
Santana wasn’t on the 40-man roster.
Redsoxx_62
They had to make room for Santana on the 40 man

thanks guys…make sense now. hopefully Franchy goes down when Arroyo comes back

He’s got to go. Agree. Duran has been super cold the last week or so also, so he’s not getting the call anytime real soon.
Still hoping they leave Chavis on the roster when Aroyo comes back and Cordero gets sent down. He’s not helping anything when he’s playing. Let Chavis have the AB’s marwin gets at 2b/3b, even vs RH pitchers, at least he doesn’t look lost at the plate and his non K outs are mostly loud ones.

I’m not a MG fan but Cora is. No way he gets DFAed.
darrick
How low does the BA go before he’s gone: .150? I hated the signing because he was a cheater in HOU. Arroyo and Santana can handle it from here
looiebelongsinthehall
His at bats have mostly stunk and while he can play multiple positions, so could Brock Holt. I’m not going backwards but sometimes the best change you make is the one you don’t make. Holt should still be the versatile lefty off the bench. I too have seen enough of both MG and Franchy. For all the crap that Sweihart took, was he any worse?
jmi1950
Marwin was put in for defense. Bottom of the 9th one run game.
Mlb1971
Brewer and Walden both got hammered in AAA tonight. Brewer needs a DFA worse than Brice, but that would only have solved the 40-man roster problem. Brice is better than Brewer, so assuming he clears waivers, He will be AAA depth.
Hawaiiboy
Marwin isn’t going anywhere no matter how much he stinks.
HBan22
Brice should have been gone long ago. Red Sox fans everywhere are breathing a sigh of relief right now.
miltpappas
So should Cora’s pal, Cordero. Franchy should be released.

That Benintendi trade is looking pretty bad right now
theodore glass
We received 5 players Cordero is the only one playing in the big leagues.
Bruin1012
Wincowski is looking pretty good and there are still 3 more PTBNL let’s wait until the whole trade is known to make that sort of proclamation.
Mlb1971
Winckowski has been outstanding!! He was a bigger piece of the trade (higher ceiling) than Cordero.
Cordero was like James Loney in the Carl Crawford, Beckett, Punto, Gonzalez trade to LA in 2012. Most fans don’t remember James Looney let alone that he was a nothing piece in that trade like Cordero is in this one.
MafiaBass
You’re being too impatient. Let him get sorted out in the minors.
Mlb1971
If the article is correct, which I believe it is, then no team will claim Brice unless they feel he is worth the prorated $870,000 contract which is $300,000 more than the major league minimum. I think he clears waivers and will end up in Worcester.
kingbum
MG has a relationship with Cora going back to Houston it’s why he’s on this roster. I think MG will hit better though than he had been and its obvious so does Cora.
Horace Fury
I agree with you, although my slant is that MG was Bloom’s sop to Cora to give him an old Astro buddy. I think Bloom can pull the plug any time he wants now, given that MG is unproductive at the plate, although he is still useful in the field, particularly with injuries to Arroyo and (recently) Enrique, so that keeps him around longer–at least until Santana clearly overshadows him.

It was odd to me when they gave him the think it was 3m when the club already had Chavis, Munoz and the at the time, possibly needing more seasoning Arauz who can all play multiple positions all around the IF, with Chavis some LF and Munoz both corner OF positions. Gonzalez was just another utility guy when the team had 3 already.. Lefty or not, the money probably should have gone to a reliever.
Salvi
Hindsight is 20/20. Bloom brought in multiple options, it’s easy to point at the one that didn’t work and say “He should’ve saved this 3mil, it’s obvious”.
jmi1950
3 gms without the DH. The move was to keep an extra position player. It will be interesting to see if they go back to an extra P when they get the DH back.
Rsox
Probably. When Arroyo comes back they will likely send Cordero and Chavis back to Worcester
Steve7seven
I realize due to contract obligations but Gonzalez might be a classic “change of scenario” type of player. We are a bit redundant now and Marwin is not playing well. There can only be so many “versatile” players and the Sox def have the most.
