The Red Sox have claimed right-hander Brandon Brennan off waivers from the Mariners. Brennan has been assigned to Triple-A Worcester. Righty Ryan Brasier was moved on the 60-day injured list to open up space for Brennan on Boston’s 40-man roster.
Seattle designated Brennan for assignment last week. The 29-year-old righty came to the Mariners from the Rockies in the 2018 Rule 5 Draft, and posted a 4.56 ERA and an above-average 24% strikeout rate over 47 1/3 innings for the M’s in his 2019 rookie season. Shoulder problems sidelined Brennan for over two and a half months of the 2019 season, and an oblique strain limited him to 7 1/3 innings in 2020.
Brennan hadn’t yet seen any MLB action this season, as he had been working at the Mariners’ alternate training site. His addition will add a bit more relief depth to a Red Sox pen that has been without Brasier, who began the year on the IL due to a calf strain, and he was also recovering from a fractured pinky finger during the season. It didn’t seem like Brasier was going to be back before June anyway, so his move to the 60-day IL is essentially just a procedural move on Boston’s part.

Strange move for Boston; they must be worried about their recent bullpen implosions. I was hoping they’d bring up Duran (OF) after moving Brasier to the 60 day – IL. This Brennan kid has decent ‘real’ numbers this season but his FIP tells a different story.
Jaxondeats
Hasn’t even played this year
BuddyBoy
As a Mariners fan, he’s a decent middle man in the bullpen but has been battling injuries the last year plus. Putting him in AAA is not a bad option for the Red Sox

I just heard that Duran is hoping to play in thr upcoming Olympic qualifiers for the US in Florida. I wonder how that is effecting their plans seeing as he cant participate while on the 40 man.

Brennan didn’t even make the Big League BP for Seattle this year. He hasn’t pitched one inning for us in 2021. I believe he was our Rule 5 pickup in 2019 and while at times he looked good that year at times he was also very hittable.
If I remember correctly- one of Brennan’s first ML outings in his 2019 Rule 5 yr was vs BOS. He sat down the heart of the BOS lineup in the 7th and 8th inn. He must’ve really made a big first impression!!
SodoMojo90
He was really good the first half of his first season here in Seattle but then got rocked the last 2 months and hasn’t been healthy much since. The potential is there if he’s healthy

Good depth move for if/when Whitlock gets moved to the rotation.

Whitlock isn’t going to the rotation. The current starting pitching is fine. And they still have houck waiting at the alternate site and Sale will be back in a few months
cgallant
Oh ok thanks. I guess they’re just going to keep one of their best arms in middle relief for the rest of the year then.
JoeBrady
Obviously.
1-Not stretched out.
2-Coming off of TJS.
3-The rotation is currently fine.
4-The BP has some holes.
5-Starting requires a different pitch selection than relieving.
But all that doesn’t, even if you didn’t know it. What matters is that a few months ago, he was a rule 5 pick. Now, after 14 career innings, you want him to be a starter?
looiebelongsinthehall
Whitlock will probably move in 2022. Seems to be a real steal. Obviously the season is still young but at this rate it will be the move of the year. When was the last time a Rule 5 pick up got rookie of the year votes? Expect him to become the 8th inning set up guy next.

Roberto Clemente?

Although is not related to pitching, my comment/question is, what is Cora waiting to demote Cordero and bring Chaviz back? Corroer is not injured any longer and still not hitting at this level….let’s try something else before is too late.
bigpapi99
Chavis*
Cordero*
cgallant
I believe they’re waiting for Danny Santana to get ready to come up then you’ll probably see Cordero sent down. Chavis is on his last option so he’s prob not coming up unless they plan on keeping him on the big club.
JoeBrady
Cora is not the GM.
bigpapi99
You don’t think he has anything to say? It is not working now
KD17
JoeBrady – Did you mean BM? Those initials often come to mind when I see Cora!! Others include AH, DH, DB and POS. hahaha
Cgallant had the right answer – remaining option means a permanent spot or release and I don’t think those are choices they want to make just yet.
jmi1950
1 option allows them to send him up and down as many times as they want this year.,,
It really should be option years. Once a player has reached certain service times, he has three option years, during which he may be sent up/down many times during each year. If a player sticks for the entire year he does not use up an “option”. If he goes up and down multiple times during a single year he uses up only one “option”. After 5 yrs. service time any unused options are no longer usable.
