The Pirates have released veteran outfielder Brian Goodwin, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette was among those to report. The 30-year-old Goodwin joined the Pirates back in February on a minor league contract. The deal included an opt-out clause for May, so it’s possible Goodwin exercised it before the Pirates decided to cut him loose.
Goodwin has experience at all three outfield positions, but the former National, Royal, Angel and Red was unable to work his way up to the majors with Pittsburgh. The Pirates have primarily relied on Bryan Reynolds, Dustin Fowler (whom they outrighted last week), Phillip Evans and Gregory Polanco in the grass this year, and they’ve given a few starts to recent waiver pickup Ka’ai Tom of late. Reynolds has been far and away the most effective member of that group, while Evans has put up league-average offense and Polanco has gotten off to a slow start.
Goodwin has logged average offense in his own right during his 1,124-plate appearance career, in which he has hit .250/.317/.455 (101 wRC+) with 42 home runs and 22 stolen bases. That history of respectable offensive production should help him latch on elsewhere sometime soon.
Great guy…I hope someone picks him up.
See you on the giants.
that’s what i’m thinking too
Tauchman fills his role. Yaz is supposed to come back Friday. Why would the Giants need him when Dickerson, Yaz, Tauchman, LaMonte Wade, and Steven Duggar are all LH OF’s and are the primary depth in the position.
Pick him up for an injury to be named later??
Halos should hit him up again… some depth and a solid veteran would be a good idea
Exactly especially with fowler going down.
I agree. He was great for the Angels. He can play right field and Walsh can go back to first base. If Minasian doesn’t do that he’s really dumb.
I agree.
Obviously I’m thinking the Pirates are more interested in what their young, controllable guys can do; but it’s still frustrating to know that he was held off the roster for a whole month and they’ve not brought him up.
You have to respect the Pirates’ organization for concentrating on the rebuild through youth vs. patchwork fill-ins with veterans for the purpose of mid-season trade. You don’t want your team to look like the Tigers.
Gary-You are exactly right if the Pirates had major league ready prospects that could get ML experience.
Their cupboard is bare.
Maybe Alford turns it around in AAA but play Goodwin until someone pops up.
Now that Polanco is done and with Newman not hitting they might as well have three pitchers batting. When Braught comes back they should move him to the outfield like the Angels and Ohtani.
Goodwin is a respectable player who certainly would not embarrass the Pirates.
They need lots of help.
Maybe DD will take a flyer, we could use him in center
I have nothing bad to say about Goodwin on his short stint with the Reds. Thought he was a solid fielder, great team guy, and a solid guy any team can use to backup or even start.
Mr. Goodwin, White Sox on line 1.
You win.
He’ll catch on somewhere with a minor league deal if he still wants to. He’s capable with ability both defensively and offensively.
Surprised that Pittsburgh didn’t work out as that seems to be the “scraping the bottom of the barrel” organization. Leads me to believe it was more of Brian’s doings than the organization’s.
Maybe end up overseas?
He probably already knows he has a MLB team interested in his services, so he tripped his opt out.
Angels?
Can’t be worse than what the Phillies are running out there in CF each night.
Could see him back in KC.
he’ll be in Philly by the end of the week
Think so? You’ve obviously never seen what the Pirates have run out there at times. If he couldn’t get a call up here, he is unlikely to see a spot anywhere else
Paging Al Avila
So we can fire him
I’m good with that. He’s horrible.
Might be a nice improvement for the Phillies in CF….
Signing with my Chicago White Sox.
