The Padres are reinstating right-hander Chris Paddack from the COVID-19 injured list to start today’s game against the Giants, the team announced. To create 40-man roster space, outfielder Jorge Oña was transferred to the 60-day IL. Oña underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery earlier this week and is expected to be out for six to eight weeks. Reliever Nabil Crismatt was optioned to clear active roster space.
Paddack went on the Covid IL on April 30, but he’ll return after just ten days away. The 25-year-old made five starts in the season’s first month, managing a 5.40 ERA/4.03 SIERA over 23 1/3 innings. It’s been a disappointing start on the heels of a similarly pedestrian 2020 season that saw Paddack work to a 4.73 ERA/3.91 SIERA in twelve starts.
Of course, there’s still plenty of time for Paddack to right the ship. He boasts a mid-90’s fastball and quality changeup, and Paddack’s 6.7% walk rate is far better than average. He’s also not far removed from a 2018 season when he tossed 140 2/3 innings of 3.33 ERA ball and looked to be emerging as a high-end starter. Paddack will slide back into the star-studded San Diego rotation alongside Yu Darvish, Blake Snell, Joe Musgrove and Dinelson Lamet.
The Baseball Fan
The Padres rotation always has someone injured, which sucks because when they’re all healthy they can make an argument for best in baseball. Again, injuries are BY FAR the biggest problem in baseball.

Maybe next year when Gore is ready and Clevinger comes back. Paddack doesn’t scare anyone even when healthy. He will be lucky to still be a Padre in 2022.

Paddack will be in the pen if Clevinher and Gore are ready. Johnson and Kela are free agents after the season. No sense in signing a free agent when you have Javy Guerra and Paddack as immediate replacements.

Mike Clevinger’s career as a starter is over.

We’ll see. Taillon and and Eovaldi have been effective coming back for TJ #2 and Clev is a much better pitcher than either of them are.

TIL that a 5.02 ERA is “effective”

In other words they are as good now as before.

Paddack is a decent 5th starter. We need him in the rotation.
Hopefully Lamet can pitch 4 innings in his next outing. I didn’t hear an update after his last start.

Paddack really isn’t bad. He needs to develop a decent breaking pitch so that hitters don’t just sit on the fastball and change up.
He was overhyped coming up a few years ago when the Padres pitching staff was pretty mediocre. He had some success until the hitters figured him out. Right now the guy is kind of a project. He’s still young, just 25, so there’s still time for him to turn it around.

The issue is Paddack’s fastball is just not good and he throws it 65% of the time. His spin rate has declined each season and so has its effectiveness. His changeup is plus though. I wonder if he flipped his usage and started throwing the changeup more often. Or just find a way to get his spin rate back up into the 2300s. An extreme solution may be to switch to a 2-seamer and sinker/changeup guys to death.
I Beg To Differ
He’s a pen piece or an opener/piggyback type pitcher
He’s capable of giving you 1-3 solid innings with fastball and change-up. Definitely not a traditional starter.
But he’s controllable til 2025.

Paddock pitch alright today, he kept the Giants at bay, unlike Snell and company.

my god that joke never gets old Ryan

Let him think its funny. It’s all he has in life. Don’t take that away from him.

His consistency is the only remarkable thing about him. Remove is currently 0 for 28 in my scorebook…

At this point, Paddack might be better than Snell (not saying much), who completely lacks command of his pitches
