The latest minor moves from around baseball:
- The Orioles have released left-hander Josh Rogers, Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com tweets. Rogers, soon to turn 27, was part of the return the Orioles received from the Yankees in a July 2018 trade centering on reliever Zack Britton. He wasn’t regarded as a high-end prospect at the time, and his stock took a hit when he underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2019. Rogers did appear in the majors with the Orioles during his first two seasons with the organization, but he could only muster an 8.65 ERA in 26 innings. While Rogers has returned to the mound at the Triple-A level this season after his TJ procedure, his struggles continued before the O’s cut him loose, evidenced by a 7.79 ERA in 17 1/3 frames.

This is progress as an Orioles fan.
Sorting through these dudes that were acquired under prior regimes is what has to happen sooner than later.
We have to learn to keep the right guys around here. The list of former Orioles who were released or given away is long…and heartbreaking….
Mike Yazstremski, Josh Hader, Yermin Mercedes, so many other pitchers that had obvious talent, we just have no idea how to cultivate it….
Frustrating as hell.

Pirates fan here who lives near Baltimore… you’re spot on! Orioles just like my buccos simply have the wrong people flying the plane! Yaz simply wasted away in that unorganization .

Yaz was garbage on the Orioles minors teams, period. You should never worry about giving away a 28 year old who can’t hit in AAA. His revival obviously had something to do with coaching on the Giants, perhaps connecting with someone he worked with well.
But let’s be honest here, if his name was “Mike Smith” he’d just be another one of the nameless castoffs that the Giants have made productive, like Ruf. His name is what makes people think he’s a star.
He showed up around #50ish on MLBs top player list, and yet Verdugo didn’t make the list with even better numbers and more track record.

Josh Rogers is the exact type of cautionary tale that should be remembered when guys go down for TJ surgery. The success rate for the surgery is high, but we shouldn’t ever forget that some guys don’t come back from it. At least not the same as before.

Rogers could be a good idea for the Detroit Tigers to sign. Good enough K% and low walk rate

So I guess the 7.79 ERA in AAA is just not important in your book? You can strike out the side and walk no one in an inning and still give up a LOT of runs.
Peart of the game
True, but the sample size was 17 1/3 innings so I’m not as concerned as I would be if the amount of innings was larger.

He can always become batting practice pitcher. He can help build their confidence.

O’s thought Elias would do what Lunhow did w/‘Stros but Elias didn’t have a Springer/Altuve/Kuechel in the system or have Bobby Heck draft a Correa and McCullers for him.
mehs
Elias is building from the ground up just like the Astros did.
