The Mets are planning to reinstate first baseman Pete Alonso from the 10-day injured list, reports Buster Olney of ESPN (Twitter link). He’ll return from a hand sprain after spending the minimum amount of time on the IL. The 2019 NL Rookie of the Year got off to a fantastic start to the 2021 season, but his production has cratered since he was hit by a pitch on May 5. Mets fans are surely hoping the brief reset will allow him to recapture his previous levels of production.
Alonso isn’t the only Mets position player returning to the field in the near future. Kevin Pillar is expected back within the next few days, Olney also reports. The 32-year-old outfielder suffered multiple nasal fractures when he was hit in the face by a Jacob Webb fastball just under two weeks ago. Considering how frightening that scene was, it’s nothing short of remarkable Pillar is seemingly in line to come back as quickly as he is.
Even once Pillar returns, the Mets will still find themselves short in the outfield. Brandon Nimmo, Michael Conforto, Albert Almora Jr. and Johneshwy Fargas all remain on the IL. In their absences, the Mets have mostly relied upon Dominic Smith, Cameron Maybin, Billy McKinney and Brandon Drury in the grass.
To add to that outfield mix, New York is planning to select Mason Williams, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com (Twitter link). The 29-year-old Williams has gotten to the big leagues in each of the past six seasons, although he’s never topped 132 plate appearances in any given year. Once a well-regarded prospect in the Yankees system, Williams signed a minor-league deal with the Mets last month. He’s raked at Triple-A Syracuse in the early going, hitting .373/.458/.569 over 59 plate appearances. A 40-man roster move will be necessary to create space for Williams’ formal selection.

Is he back tonight? Will need it against Cy Fried.
Keithyim
Unless Alonso has a weather machine, I don’t see how activating him today helps.
joeyrocafella
Besides the weather… The Mets would also be putting out there a guy that has actual Cy Youngs

Awesome news
Srechter35
Met mason Williams multiple times. Dude was always super friendly and willing to chat. Rooting for ya, man.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Me too. He deserves this chance.

What about JD Davis?
MetsFan22
People been quiet on the Mets lately. I wonder why?
rct
There haven’t been many articles about the Mets in the past few days.
VonPurpleHayes
@rct There was an article on Walker’s return.
MetsFan22
I’m taking about the fans saying slick stuff about us.
VonPurpleHayes
“People been quiet on the Mets lately.”
What does this even mean? I’ve seen plenty of Mets coverage.
MetsFan22
I mean people hating on the comments
oldmansteve
I think it’s because you’ve haven’t been posting Mets comments on unrelated articles. No one hates the Mets. They just hate you.
VonPurpleHayes
I mean they haven’t won on the road. They haven’t beaten above .500 teams. But beating the Braves was huge. Especially with all the injuries. The team has fight, and they’re in the worst division in baseball. With the recent Ozuna fiasco, I think the Mets can take this division fairly easily. Braves and Marlins are threats though.
MetsFan22
The Braves and Phillies maybe. Marlins have a 0 percent chance of doing anything this year. Yeah they got good pitching…. no bullpen or hitting….
VonPurpleHayes
I assure you, the Marlins are significantly better than the Phillies. It’s not even close. The Phillies are a joke. Mets better than both for sure.
MarlinsFanBase
@MetsFan22
What do you want to hear? After all, we know that I won’t disappear like you did last year.
Okay, congrats to the Mets playing so well against the juggernaut D-Backs, Rockies and O’s to have them in the early season lead.
Are you happy now? We’re giving you attention.
seanmc1983
They beat the hell out of the Braves last night
FletcherFan66
Pete Alonso beats the hell out of his corn syrup bottle
@DaOldDerbyBastard
This is the second time you’ve posted something like this. What the hell are you talking about Fletcherfan?
FletcherFan66
It’s well known that the Mets’ nutritionists have Alonso on a high carb diet. He doesn’t like bread or pasta, so he has to eat lots of foods with high corn syrup concentration. I made a YT video where I asked him about his nutrition before a game in 2019, but I got a copyright strike from the Wilpons. Didn’t want their delicious little secret getting out.
MarlinsFanBase
Considering that Alonso is already a little chunky at such a young age, I’m not sure why the Mets nutritionists would have him on a high carb. That’s going to hurt when he’s older and his metabolism slows down.
oldmansteve
Almost all high level athletes should be on high carb diets. This isn’t news.
MarlinsFanBase
Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. When an athlete has weight problems, they are required to reduce carbs. Also, when athletes are older and their metabolism has slowed, they also go on low carb diets.
It also depends on the sport as well and the specific need of the player.
oldmansteve
That’s why I said almost all.
“When an athlete has weight problems, they are required to reduce carbs.” Very few high level athletes are actually fat. Even in baseball, very few need to lose weight.
“Also, when athletes are older and their metabolism has slowed, they also go on low carb diets.” Old athletes are in their 30s. Their metabolisms haven’t slowed to a such a level that they should go on “low-carb diets”. Less than a 21 year old? Sure. But definitely not low.
A very small percentage of high level athletes need to have a low carb diet. ALMOST ALL should be on high carbs.
Wilmer Flores' Tears
At least Maybin finally got his first hit! Even at this pace, I predict Maybin will get more base hits than MARCELL OZUNA the rest of the season.
andremets
I think both Obubah and Maybrin have seen their last at bats of the year already.
bobsnoot
New York really needs to think about calling up Szapucki.
Oldschoolandthemets1980
I would try and get someone like Grossman from the Tigers or heck even Justin Upton from Angels.
Cosmo2
Upton is awful
EasternLeagueVeteran
No reason to pull the trigger on a trade yet. These guys are not out for the year yet. And why break up the chemistry now ( tongue in cheek). Seriously, they are seemingly finding ways to wins games and get enough runs for their pitchers who have been very good.
icantstandyous
I’m afraid Szapucki=Corey Oswalt with no MLB experience. Which is not a good equation for the Mets. Save a lucky start here or there you have yourself the very definition of replacement player. Just hope he can perform like one.
Derek C
How is it already postponed? Lets play 7 another day. That’s been the MO for MLB all year. Pathetic they don’t give these games more of a chance to be played
whynot 2
There is not point starting a game that has little chance of being completed. Why waste a starter, especially deGrom.
VonPurpleHayes
Yes. Because the injury devastated Mets really need to risk playing in horrendous weather.
MarlinsFanBase
I don’t recommend playing so many make-up games as a 162-game season goes on with a 26-man roster. It was easier last year with a 30-man roster for 60 games.
seanmc1983
They get 27 for DHs, and they only have to play 14 innings. That’s really not bad. The biggest problem is having 2 SPs ready to go on the same day, but teams have adapted to the bullpen game so well – and it’s much easier to do when you only need to fill 7 innings – that it’s not much of an issue regardless.
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, but it’s still 162 games this time around. And players are already getting hurt throughout MLB. And let’s be honest. We’re not exactly all playing in the easiest division. That takes a toll on any team
After today’s rainout with the Marlins, I’m glad we’re making it up next Monday. With players getting injured frequently, especially in our division, I don’t want the Marlins to have to make up too many games.
whynot 2
Playing 10 games in 7 days. 5 of those games in three different cities within a 3 day span… what could go wrong?
whynot 2
“We’re making it up” “our division”… please adjust your screen name to Marlinsfanboy, it will be so much more appropriate
