The Marlins announced a series of roster moves this afternoon (via Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald). Center fielder Starling Marté has been activated from the injured list, while infielder Luis Marté has been selected to the roster. To clear active roster space, first baseman Lewin Díaz was optioned to Triple-A Jacksonville, while shortstop Miguel Rojas was placed on the 10-day injured list with a dislocated left index finger. Miami already had an open spot on the 40-man roster, so no additional move was required to accommodate Luis Marté’s selection.
Starling Marté got off to a good start to the season, hitting .310/.414/.483 with a pair of homers over his first 70 plate appearances. That was halted when Marté suffered a non-displaced rib fracture on a swing in mid-April, sending him to the IL. He’ll now return to action a little less than six weeks later, where he’ll try to build on his solid work early in the year.
It’s an important season for Marté, who’s in the final year of the contract extension he signed with the Pirates in March 2014. The 32-year-old is a few months away from his first trip to the open market. Marté’s strong track record and expiring contract would also make him a plausible midseason trade candidate if Miami falls out of the National League postseason picture. The young Marlins have held around in a jam-packed NL East, going 24-26 over their first 50 games. Despite that, FanGraphs pegs the team’s playoff odds at a meager 1.5%, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Marté’s name floated in trade talks in the coming months.
Rojas suffered a “concerning” finger dislocation during yesterday’s game against the Phillies. It’s unclear how much time he’s expected to miss. The injury opened a spot for Luis Marté, who’ll be making his MLB debut the first time he gets into a game. The 27-year-old spent the first seven-plus seasons of his professional career in the Rangers system, topping out at Triple-A.
Marté was in the high minors with the Braves between 2018-19 and inked a minors deal with Miami over the winter. He’s never offered much at the plate, hitting .245/.263/.355 in four seasons at Double-A and .261/.284/.352 in nearly as much Triple-A time. Marté has ample experience all around the infield in the minors, though, and he’s hit three homers in 61 plate appearances this year with Jacksonville, albeit with similar on-base issues as he’s had throughout his career.

What’s the difference between reinstated from injured list and activated from injured list?
GONEcarlo
Don’t think there’s any difference

Wrong Luis Marte link. The link here goes to the pitcher from 2011-2012.

It seems like we’re averaging 3-4 injuries a week, so I’m celebrating every return from the IL.

The Marlins should definitely trade Marte and other veteran players at the deadline for a few prospects. They should aim for a high draft pick next year again.
Mjm117
Or they do the smart thing trade for more Bats and BP pitching during the deadline as they’re only 3 gems back in the division.
Johnnymarty95
I personally don’t think they should start trading away the farm system just yet. If they flip guys like Marte, Duvall, or Dickerson, they could get back prospects or young MLB ready players. 2022 will probably be their last year of tanking/rebuilding. They can just add more to the farm system right now while building around their young core of players.

The Marlins have a great core of SPs. However, except Grisholm and Alfaro, all their position players are a year away from being old.
If MIA does trade, they have to get MLB ready or breakout ready younger players and not just prospects in return.

@GarryHarris
Who is Grisholm? And other than him, Alfaro is the only position player a year away from being old? Did we trade away Jazz Chisolm and Brian Anderson? Did we trade our prospects that are about to come up this year?
As for trading at the deadline, it all comes down to where we are in the standings. I do feel, no matter where we are in the standings, we’ll need to make trades for either young or MLB-ready position players or bullpen. I think guys like Dickerson and Cooper should be available no matter where we are in the standings because, if we’re contending, we need a bigger bat in the lineup (maybe 2B) and we sure as heck need some bullpen help. If we’re out of the race, then just add more young pieces while bring up the young guys for experience. Of course, if we’re out of contention, guys like Marte, Aguilar and Duvall come into play for trades – maybe even Rojas as well depending on his market.

This ain’t their year yet. Marlins should be sellers, not buyers

I don’t mean to complain about the writing of this article. I did get confused at first when I got to the end of the last paragraph. I was thinking, Sterling Marté never played the infield has been a major league player since with the Pirates. It threw me off and I had to scroll back to see if there was another Marte that I overlooked. Once I realized there was 2 in the article after reading through the second time, it made sense.
But either way, back in elementary school they taught us to be specific when addressing people that have same name (first or last) by contrast to their first 1 or 2 letter in first or last name. In this case, wouldn’t it have been appropriate to use S.Marte and L.Marte? Again, my apologies for being critical of one simple thing. It’s a good article and appreciate the articles you do post. Keep us informed and thank you for everything you do!
agu_iii
It definitely would have made sense to differentiate the marte’s.
backhandinbaptist
It would’ve been S.Marte

I se what you mean if you are skimming through the article which most of us do and should be taken into account by the writer.
Reading through the article as a full article it doesnt need to have it as Sterling marte was done and cut off at the end of paragraph there and luis marte starts in paragraph 4 with no mention after that of anything related or implied of sterling. With todays on the go though should probably have just added the extra letter though. or used sterling or luis instead of marte.

Maybe the could get 4th instead of 5th now! It may be tough! But those tough hard nose marlins have a shot! Lol
FrontRowMarlins
Add to the sustainability! Marte for a top 100 prospect!
Cosmo2
Yea, except I don’t think Marte brings back a top hundred prospect. Top 150 maybe.
