Let’s begin our Monday morning by rounding up some injury news from yesterday’s games…
- Edwin Diaz left last night’s game against the Phillies after serving up a two-run double to Rhys Hoskins. Diaz was dealing with some back pain, but it doesn’t sound like the Mets are overly concerned, per Deesha Thosar of the New York Daily News (via Twitter). The Mets held on for the win anyway, pulling ahead of the Phillies into a tie for first place with the Nationals. Diaz has a 4.22 ERA/2.17 FIP in 10 2/3 innings so far with three saves, a slightly-depressed 31.8 percent strikeout rate and 11.4 percent walk rate. His velocity has been good so far this year with an average 98.8 mph fastball. If he misses time, Jeurys Familia could step in as he did last name, when he snagged the final out for the save.
- George Springer was pulled from yesterday’s game because of fatigue in his legs, writes Arden Zwelling of Sportsnet.ca. A quad injury has been bothering Springer as he tries to round himself into regular season form. While it’s a little concerning to see Springer pulled from just his fourth game of the year, it doesn’t sound as if the Blue Jays anticipate another injured list stint. Said manager Charlie Montoyo, “He felt it a little bit and we said, ’OK, there’s no sense with this hot weather and stuff to force you to hit another at-bat or run or something. So, let’s just stop right there.'”
- Kohei Arihara received an injection in his right middle finger recently to help with some soreness around a callus, but he’s still likely to miss at least one start and potentially even land on the injured list, per MLB.com’s Daniel Guerrero. With Arihara set to miss time, Hyeon-jong Yang will move into the rotation. Yang has been good in two longer stints out of the pen, allowing just two earned runs in 8 2/3 innings. Yang was a starter in the KBO, though the 33-year-old is coming off a less-than-stellar year in which he racked up a 4.70 ERA in 172 1/3 innings over 31 starts for the Kia Tigers.

Can’t wait for this guy to ‘spring’ into action full time, or is this actually full time for him? Way too early to “judge” this signing, but this has been a rough start.

Diaz is a classic example of: I had an off night, it happens, but let’s say there was an injury so people don’t hate me.

Or… he was pushing through the pain but when he served up the home run, he knew he was hurting the team.
Guess our tales depend on what we think of his character.

Yang should be good, he’ll certainly have some days where he really struggles with his control. But he’s a Wade Miley type of starter.
RunDMC
Order more bubble wrap, TOR. George’s getting weak in the knees playing in that FLA humidity.
mgomrjsurf
Didn’t you mean last night on name.
MetsFan22
Last night game was a lol.
VonPurpleHayes
The whole series was embarrassing both ways. The Phillies are a disgrace.
Ryrodaddy
Right. Mets almost as bad.
MetsFan22
The Mets are 500 without thor and carrasco and they haven’t I’m even hit yet. I don’t think they should’ve embarrassed. They should pull away soon.
VonPurpleHayes
@MetsFan22 If you weren’t embarrassed by the Phillies and Mets play in that series (and the entire month of May) then you don’t know baseball. Whether they pull away or not has nothing to do with my comment. These teams look awful right now. Sure that will likely change, but right now I’m disgusted by both teams.
MetsFan22
Again Mets are in 1st with a offense that is 10x worse then they really are and we get reinforcements. Maybe the played bad but it’s not embarrassing.
VonPurpleHayes
Tied for first with the Nats with a .500 record. It’s pathetic. They don’t need Thor and Carrasco. Their pitching has been fine. They can’t hit or play defense. I’m not saying it won’t come around. I think it will for sure. I’m saying I’m embarrassed by the NL East play over the month of April and the beginning of May. That’s all. I’m not saying teams won’t turn it around.
MetsFan22
Oh yeah the whole NL east is playing worst than they should. For sure. Except the marlins. They are about right where they should lol.

Mets are 2nd place. Last 4 years they’ve placed 4th, 3rd, 4th and 4th.
Mets are playing over their heads at 11-12.
CravenMoorehead
Sounds like Springer got a massage at Carlos Correa’s house
Lrtexasman
Better at Carlos’ than Deshaun’s.
CravenMoorehead
SPICY lol
LordD99
Maybe the Mets aren’t overly concerned because they know he’s going on the IL.
When it was a game.
That trade looks worse and worse. We don’t even know how good kelenic will be and cano is back next year.
VonPurpleHayes
@Lee Mazzilli for Hof Diaz has been one of the best closers this year until last night, which wasn’t a save situation. Diaz was also very good in 2020. I think Mets fans are still upset over 2019, but Diaz has definitely turned a corner. He’s been an elite reliever.

Von, being a closer is a tough thing. I guess I am from the age of Gossage with Ron Davis setting up. Two mentally tough guys who were extremely good Not even comparing to Mariano Rivera. But when Luis Rojas sees that befuddled “i don’t know where it’s going” look on Diaz’s face, it should be 3 batters and out of the game. He had that look last night. Could not hit McCann’s target. Pitching machines can throw 100 + mph. Time to move onto the next guy. Mets lucky last night by inches, and Phillies gave that one away. Missed the play live, but had to catch a replay of Villar scoring from first on a single ( Gameday description! )

I agree with you, Lee Mazzilli

Cano is going to be bought out
EasternLeagueVeteran
From your lips to God’s ears!
LordD99
The only way to buy him out is to straight out cut him. He has two more years beyond this season on his contract. He’s owed $48M in 2022 and 2023, of which the Mets will have to pay more than $40M. He’d be cut already if their intent was to make a statement. They’ll do what every team does when a player is suspended for PEDs. They’ll welcome him back and see what he has left in the tank.
Tom1968
Another excuse for this guy,he cant pitch in nyc where theres pressure, as opposed to Seattle, where theres none, and for the time being a football town

Mets Dodged a BULLET With Springer …
No Longer a CF will wind up as a Corner OF
its_happening
You’re probably right. Austin Martin should be the future CF for the Blue Jays unless the team moves him to the infield.
GabeOfThrones
Just an editorial note: there’s no mention of the team Arihara and Yang pitch for anywhere in the article. Not hard to find out, if one were so inclined, but you guys are usually comprehensive about updates such as these. Keep up the great work!
