The Giants made a number of roster moves ahead of tonight’s game. The biggest bit of news is the return of Mike Yastrzemski, who has been out since April 26th. While he’s not in the lineup tonight, he is available off the bench and should return to the lineup in the next couple of days. The 30-year-old outfielder put up a .215/.303/.468 line before straining his oblique.
With Yaz coming off the injured list, Alex Dickerson is heading the other way. Dickerson lands on the injured list with a bone bruise on his shoulder. Coming off a 150 wRC+ over a 52-game stretch in 2020, Dickerson has stumbled to a .213/.280/.347 line to start the season (79 wRC+). His strikeout rate is up from 17.6 percent to 22.0 percent, and his walk rate is down from 9.4 percent to 6.1 percent. He’ll get an opportunity to reset after recovering from this shoulder impingement.
Jarlin Garcia has also been added to the active roster taking Joey Bart’s spot after he was optioned to Triple-A, per Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle (Twitter links). Garcia had been out with left knee tendinitis. He surrendered six earned runs over 6 1/3 innings in five appearances early this season. All in all, it was a mixed bag for the 28-year-old southpaw, who managed a strong 32.1 percent strikeout rate despite serving up a pair of home runs and struggling with his command to the tune of a way-too-high 17.9 percent walk rate.
Finally, Johnny Cueto will return to the rotation on Sunday, and with Kevin Gausman set to return after his second vaccine shot, Logan Webb is likely headed to the bullpen. The Giants have been planning to use him as multi-inning reliever out of the pen, but injuries to Cueto and Alex Wood have kept him in the rotation to start the year. The Giants will need to make a roster move to bring Cueto back, with Sam Selman and Zack Littell being possible candidates for demotion, writes Slusser.

Yaz being back is great. What the offense is truly missing right now is Solano though, he was the guy you’d want with RISP. Frustrating to see them strand so many runners and it seems to have increased ever since Solano landed on IL.

DFA Wisler and keep littell and Selman
Baseball 1600
I’d argue they need to DFA Jarlin Garcia. They have 3 lefties (McGee, Alvarez, Baragar) that do his job better. At the very least they should try and trade him since he had a stellar shortened 2020 season. Also with Wisler DFA’d it cause Kapler to overwork Tyler Rogers even more and they need him to stay fresh and healthy.
letimmysmoke55
was going to comment the same thing. Watching Wisler hang that slider makes me nauseas.
drtymike0509
Yeah but he was a top prospect as a starter and seemed to turn a corner last year in the pen. I’d give him a bit more leash to right the ship. But wouldn’t argue with it after a few more appearances. Granted with injuries and the movement that goes with it, may not be possible either. I’d cut littell even though he’s younger than selman right now. I’m not a giants fan at all but my east coast teams end early out here and I pay a bit of attention. I also could be completely wrong…

Y A Z. Super.
TonyGwynnSD19
Yaz? Lol
Yaz been looking like Orioles Yaz so far. Giants fans are in love with all these career minor leaguers . A bunch a ‘B’ guys. Haha
mlb1225
You say the Giants won’t keep this up all season, yet you think there’s no chance Yaz can bounce back even though he had a higher wRC+ than Ronald Acuna in 2019-2020.
Balk
This dude isn’t even a Padres fan, he’s a troll. For all the players these big spending teams have in their lineup I sure the heck wouldn’t be talking getting beat by a ‘B’ grade team! Looks like a loony toon!
Jean Matrac
Balk:
Yeah, @TonyGwynnSD19 is clueless. Every time he posts, he exposes his ignorance.
If he really is a Padre fan, he ignores his own team’s failings. Compare these 2 for their 2021 starts:
Yastrzemski: 115 OPS+
Machado: 98 OPS+
Last 28 days:
Yastrzemski: .268/.359/.571, .931 OPS
Machado: .222/.311/.322, .633 OPS
And then their salaries:
Yastrzemski: $600K
Machado: $32M

Bro “It’s only 30 games in a 162 game season. Get back to me in September and see what’s up lol” you a troll inside and out. Let’s see what happens this weekend. San Diego hasn’t even won a WS. Or any type of championship for that matter. 2020 is an asterisk season and will be known as an easy 60 game season.
mcdusty49
Funny that the 2020 season is looked at that way because their teams didn’t win. EVERY team had to go through the same nonsense and were all in the same boat, whoever won it deserves to be called a World Series champion
Balk
In every sport there can only be one winner in the end, yes, the Dodgers won in the end….of a shortened season. That’s just facts. So much happens through the course of a season. You can’t take away teams that battled through 162 games to win out and give the Dodgers an equal sign only playing not even a half a season. Reality is just what that is.
BeforeMcCourt
You completely negate the difficulty of 2020s playoffs, which is all LA plays for. 8 straight division titles. LA don’t stress about getting to October, unlike SF. Quite frankly, neither the Nationals nor the Red Sox win their titles with 2020’s lack of off days
For whatever you want to take away from a 60 game regular season they more than made up for it dealing with the playoff schedule. And they had no cake walk in matchups, facing the best possible seeds each of the last 3 rounds
No one expected LA to miss the playoffs in 2020. They were on pace for 116 wins & were top seed in baseball. They were going to be just fine for 162. Who cares if they only played 60? Pretending they wouldn’t have made the playoffs is just dumb. So it comes down to the playoffs. And once again, 2020 was significantly harder than any playoff run of recent memory, with the lack of rest for pitchers. Reality is what it is
Funny how brazen giants fans are here suddenly. And let’s be real, 2021 giants have been nothing special. You guys are 5-5 in your last 10. Even with LA playing horrible 4-14 last 2 weeks, you’re just two games up. You’re treading water when LA is at its lowest. That’s such a win you’re comfortable talking smack now? Freakin hilarious
Paul_25
Bro get over yourself. Everyone knows if Dodgers play a full season(162 games) they won’t win a WS. One way or another your players choke or get worn out. If my team couldn’t win if they had full crowds and real home field advantage. Then I take what I can get. If the Giants got hot last year and won everyone including their mom would say “ it was only a 60 season and they got hot at the right time.” ESPN, MLB network and everyone else would say it was a short season up for grabs. 60 games is nothing and your players got to rest until July. Not a real season, it’s more like Dodgers won a Summer Tournament.
Balk
Idc what fake format you put in place for a playoff bracket, you totally negate that pitchers only had to make, if lucky 12 starts, you had a universal Dh, and you only played in your own division! Idc about what you say about us fans who like the Giants, what’s laughable is they weren’t supposed to be anything but a joke to all of you haters, and finish next to last the last 5 years, and every year they have out performed their expectations. Just like when they grabbed 3 rings. Move along now. 2020 will always be remembered as a shortened season. Period
BeforeMcCourt
Awww I got more of his buddies out of the woodwork! Hey Paul! How do we know LA is going to miss the playoffs after being there EIGHT STRAIGHT YEARS!? Sorry, you haven’t had that type of sustained success to even be able to comprehend what it’s like to be a fan of a team like this. Keep trying buddy
So the argument here is since the dodgers didn’t play 162 games, they aren’t legitimate champions, right Paul, Balk and everyone else who wants to make a profile to fight today?
By that logic, the Giants have 3 titles in their entire history. Guess everything before 1961 doesn’t matter!
See how idiotic that is? Any team before 1961 played “a full year” for that year. And then they won the title.
So… did the Giants never win a legitimate title until 2010, or did the 2020 season count as any other year?
BeforeMcCourt
“ you totally negate that pitchers only had to make, if lucky 12 starts, you had a universal Dh, and you only played in your own division! ”
NO IT DOESNT. You had the same standards! Why didn’t SF win a title? Why didn’t SF get the top seed if it was so easy??
“ what’s laughable is they weren’t supposed to be anything but a joke to all of you haters, and finish next to last the last 5 years, and every year they have out performed their expectations. ”
Any real dodger fan knows Zaidi is doing great things for SF. Your rise to 500 is nothing shocking. What a rise!
Really Balk, ANY Giants fan knows giants fans should be thankful the Dodgers fixed your front office by gifting our GM and the blueprint to success on a silver platter. If LA blocked Zaidi to SF, you’re still the biggest joke in the NL outside of Pitt.
Wooo. Your RIVAL is why you’re claiming you’re not a joke anymore. What a win!
Balk
Hahaha, you copy and paste my whole comment? The Giants AGAIN weren’t expected to be a top seed in their division even in the years they did win in a 162 game season. Your logic is flawed kid! Period! Time and time again the Dodgers have won the division and couldn’t finish the job. I’m not going over and over this with you short minded doyers! In the record books it will state the Dodgers won a championship in a shortened season! You can’t put an equal sign on that championship to the teams that won out over a course of 162. Common sense. As you see now, teams are dealing with injuries, if this was last year, the Dodgers would be on the brink of not making the playoffs. See how that works!? You can’t judge what was going to happen in a short season. Facts. They played against their own division with a DH. Asterisk for 2020, period. What’s the big deal? Win this year and I’ll agree, they are champs, but right now they are only the champs of a shortened season. Can’t change the facts troll.
Pete'sView
I don’t see where Giant fans are “talking smack.” I’m a Giants fan and I acknowledge—without hesitation or asterisk—that LA were the champions last year. Good for you guys. And I expect your team will continue to be good for many years. I’ll still be a SF fan and enjoy my team as it creeps up on your Dodgers and, eventually, surprises you.
Sal Trent
Joey Bart should have kept on the team so he could have played 1st base against leftiy pitchers for the ever weak hitting Belt & had Posey mentor Bart !!
Jean Matrac
Sal Trent:
Bart? You want to platoon the guy with 6 HRs in 88 ABs, with the guy that had zero HRs in 105 ABs last year? You want to play the guy that had a 70 OPS+ last season over the guy with the 123 OPS+ this season?
Do you seriously want to replace Belt against lefties, who’s tied with Freddie Freeman for most OAAs at first base since 2016, with Bart, who has never played 1B in his college or professional career?
You mean you want Bart, who has a chance to be an outstanding MLB catcher, the most important position on the field, to platoon at 1B? You would rather him do that, instead of playing him every day at AAA to learn how to become that above average MLB catcher? Posey has a job catching, let the AAA coaches do their job.
Besides, Bart isn’t ready, he’s played 22 games at AA, and none at AAA. I know there is a completely nonsensical hatred of Belt among some, but this suggestion carries the absurdity to new heights.
BeforeMcCourt
Defense is why Belt should be allowed to flounder against lefties, even though he’s sucked against lefties since he was a toddler?
Seems like you’re clearly missing his point
Sal Trent
Belt sucks & Bart is a much better hitter than Casali. Flores can take a hike too.
Sal Trent
Yes I want to replace Belt against lefty pitchers. He is a horrible hitter through out his entire long career. I think you missed my point, I want Posey tom play 1st base against lefties ^& Bart to catch when he does! I think Bart would learn more from playing WITH Posey than playing in the Minors. We’ve had many rookies already come up this season. Bart had an excellent Spring Training & deserves a shot.
Sal Trent
Barts OPS last season was 609 not 70 !! LOL In 2019 Bart hit .316 & had a 912 OPS in AA !! Get your facts straight !!
xtraflamy
@Sal please take a breath and read more carefully. The stat used by @tad was OPS+ which was indeed 70 last year for Bart.
baseball-reference.com/players/b/bartjo01.shtml
Also? Casali has been great behind the dish, and I believe the pitchers love him as a battery mate. He makes up for his lack of offense by helping our pitchers be one of the best rotations in baseball.
Bart needs more reps in the minors to sharpen all aspects of his game. He was basically unwatchable last year, striking out almost 36.9% of the time (paired with a dismal 2.7% walk rate), and was basically sulking his way through the season. I still don’t know what his teeth look like because I have never seen him smile.
In recent years players strike out a lot because they sell out to the HR – but how many HRs for Bart in 2020? Zero. ISO? .087. Average exit velocity on ones he did hit was 89, win probability was negative, oWAR was barely above replacement. This shows that he was lost at the plate and couldn’t adjust.
Hopefully he’ll end up being really good, but his audition last year showed he needs more seasoning, more practice and more coaching.
Sal Trent
In 2020 Bart had 103 ABs with the Giants, Caasali had 120 for the Cin.. Reds. It was Casalis 7th year in MLB, it was Barts 1st !! To compare any of Barts stats in his 1st year to Casali is ridiculous ! In Casalis 1st year his OPS+ was 40 ! How many HRs did Casali hit in his 1st year, thats right, Zero. Casalis ISO in his 1st year was .042, Barts was .087. Win Probability for Casali was MORE negative.! Lets be fair, don’t compare last years stats, it was only Barts debut in MLB but it was better than Casalis. If given the time, Bart will become light years ahead of Curt Casali For Gods sake, Casali is batting .105 this season !!!!!!!!!
Pete'sView
Sal Trent — You know that’s a silly comparison, one that would be absurd with most Major League hitters. Bart may be the better player in a few years (I certainly hope so), but right now Casali i an excellent defensive catcher and—in the long run this year—the better hitter; just look at his resume. Bart is not ready.
Sal Trent
No way in hell Casali is a better hitter now or ever. Hes hitting below .125 !! I’ll give it to him defensively but hitting is more important.
AndyWarpath
You lost all credibility when you mixed up ops and ops+
Sal Trent
Yea right, thats a big error, The other guy thought I wanted Bart to play 1st Base & was also comparing Barts 1st year stats to Casalis 7th year, but thats OK !!
nutznboltz
I’m a huge Padre fan but they have many holes on this team. They will finish behind the Dodgers and Giants unless they fix these holes.
Buzz Saw
Why do Dodgers fans love to post on threads that have nothing to do with their team? I’m mean if the Giants are so terrible why bother reading about them? I think deep down you fear they may actually may end up over achieving like they did in ‘10, ‘12, and ‘14. The Dodgers have been the benchmark of underachievers for years. ONE asterisk WS title to show for annually having the “best” team in the NL. So much angst towards a team that had nothing to do with your teams post season implosions. Even now , how can you NOT be running away with the NL west with nothing but mediocre teams in the division? Pretty pathetic if you ask me.
Balk
How can any Dodger fan Dodge those facts? Lol! They’ve squandered every division title except a shortened season for 30 years! Lol!
