The Dodgers have placed Jimmy Nelson on the injured list with right forearm inflammation, per the team. Phil Bickford has been recalled to take his roster spot. Bickford was only recently claimed off waivers from the Brewers.
A starter for most of his career, Nelson has transitioned to a new role this season, and a valuable one at that. He has tossed 18 2/3 inning in 16 appearances with a 2.41 ERA/1.86 FIP for the Dodgers. Though he has induced just a 37.1 percent groundball rate and walked more batters than they’d like with a 14.3 percent walk rate, Nelson has posted a career-best 39 percent strikeout rate.
Bickford was twice made a first round pick, first coming out of high school in 2013 and then again as the 18th overall pick of the Giants in 2015. The Brewers acquired him in 2016 along with Andrew Susac for lefty Will Smith. He made just one appearance with the Brewers in 2020 and one again in 2021. In his last full season of work, Bickford posted a 2.48 ERA across 32 2/3 innings during his second stint in High-A.

Hands off Jimmy! Don’t touch Jimmy!

Another player injured! What a bunch of bums! Players these days are soft! They don’t wanna play! Blah blah blah yelling at clouds blah!

What’s goin on, @Cosmo?
Ya know, I really wish I was smart enough to know why we are seeing all these injuries.
Hey. If you want to know how to build something, well, I can tell you how to build something.
If you want to know why all these injuries are happening, well, I can tell you how to build something.
But this constant barrage of injury updates is just simply No Fun At All, man. Which sucks, because I am pro-fun if anything.
I keep wondering what our respective ballclubs are going to look like in September. After – ya know – about 130 games.
Teams might be comprised of; Very Little Fun.
If you will.

Yea it sucks. I don’t mean to make light of human injury. My main thing is that something is going on, but it’s not the players fault. I just can’t stand when fans rag on injured players as if they’re happy to be out of the game.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Oh, I understood what you were saying.
& knowing the vast variety of human nature, there probably is an occasional player who is content to sit in a hot tub & collect checks.
But even having the slightest inkling about the incredible drive it takes to make it all the way to the bigs, those guys are going to be really hard to find.
A lot of pretty smart folks predicted this would happen.
@Whyhazee (it pains me to admit as he is the biggest Yankee hating troll on the board) has a really good explanation for it. Hit him up. I’d actually recommend it. Has to do with varying schedules & physical work. He compiled a report on it in re construction workers. Good stuff, serious.
Also: I didn’t catch a whiff of making light of guys getting hurt. That’s the one thing that’ll always piss me off & I never behave all that well when I see it.

Linked to the right Andrew Susac but the wrong Will Smith.

Interesting to see that Nelson has found such success out of the bullpen. I’m no scout but I always thought his stuff was better than his results as a Brewer.

I was at the game when he went toe to toe with Clayton Kershaw, both pitching gems, and then provided the only offense by hitting a HR off of him a few months before he demolished his shoulder diving back into first base. That stupid slide dramatically altered the course of his career, it was such a sad thing to see.
KCJ
Yeah that really sucked. It looked like Nelson was on his way to becoming one of the better starting pitchers in baseball at the time….such a shame to see a career get derailed like that because of injury. I watched him struggle when he first came up, and gradually get better and better until he was really beginning to take off, only to lose it all in one moment due to a bad slide. Glad to see he’s finally back and doing well after a long recovery period….hopefully this latest setback is just a minor blip

Unrelated to the roster move, but the Lux Sux crowd has gotten mighty quiet.

Cey Hey –
Yeah there sure are a lot of brain dead commenters on here who like to jump on and off bandwagons. Seems like if a player doesn’t have success immediately these days that the “immediate gratification generation” on this site jumps all over them. Not a whole lot of patience left in this world, sadly. Glad to see Lux is getting acclimated to MLB pitching and is living up to his potential. I don’t live far from where he grew up, so Lux will always be a favorite of mine even though I’m not really a Dodger fan.
On an unrelated note, Cey Hey, do you remember when Ron Cey hit an inside the park HR at Wrigley Field? Thinking about “The Penguin” race around the bases still makes me laugh inside 35 or so years later LOL. Cey was awesome to watch…
