Dodgers left-hander David Price is close to a return, as manager Dave Roberts told The Athletic’s Fabian Aradaya (Twitter links) and other reporters that he expects Price will be activated from the 10-day injured list prior to Monday’s game against the Diamondbacks.
It makes for a relatively quick return for Price, who hit the IL due to a Grade 2 hamstring strain back on April 26. Assuming Price is indeed activated tomorrow, he’ll end up missing 20 days of action — not a bad outcome considering initial forecasts projected Price to be sidelined for somewhere the neighborhood of four to six weeks.
Price’s return will being a much-needed fresh arm to a Los Angeles bullpen that has been ravaged by injuries, though Price did post a 5.59 ERA over his first 9 2/3 innings. Five of Price’s six earned runs, however, came in his first two outings, which were his first games in over a year since Price opted out of the 2020 season. The southpaw’s numbers over his five games prior to the IL placement were much more encouraging, as Price had a 1.50 ERA and nine strikeouts over six innings.
Price will indeed be returning as a relief pitcher, as Roberts noted earlier this month, since the Dodgers plan to use Tony Gonsolin as the replacement for the injured Dustin May in the starting rotation. Shoulder inflammation has kept Gonsolin from pitching this season, though a three-inning simulated game this week will be the next step in the right-hander’s rehab plan. Once Gonsolin is able to pitch four innings, Roberts said he’d be okay with Gonsolin rejoining the Dodgers, so the manager’s opinion could also reflect the organization’s broader view.

Feels very quick, let’s hope he’s healed. A re-injured grade 2 could be pretty bad
Once he got out of Col, he was settling in nicely into his role

He and Nelson have both looked good. It might be hard to appreciate the depth with all the injuries, but it will pay off in the end. Silver linings are Uceta displaying his future starter potential and Lux getting regular reps at shortstop. Luxie is a defensive upgrade over Seager. Nice to see because I fully expect them to let Seager walk over the winter.
Cap & Crunch
All along I’ve been hoping to avoid a 10/300 w Seager ….. I hate to see injs but it could be a Silver lining w the Seager one …..another team will pay it still but we should def pass. I think the evidence is mounting this year and if he was a FA last year we would have inked him to a huge contract, so we kinda got lucky ….
I think Andrew is looking at Z right now and thinking; I want to be in the position to sign bargain guys like Disco Wood McGee in the future rather than have all the money wrapped up in one tortilla. Especially after seeing this year unfold….My goodness they need to DFA Peters and Raley just unwatchable players….they’re going to make Albert Pujols look like 2011 Albert Pujols soon in blue
Orel Saxhiser
Bellinger needs to be longtermed. Seager does not. Belli is more useful with his defense and speed. Seager will insist on remaining at SS. Can’t do that.
Outfield depth is a concern. Andrew Toles would have been perfect for this team. A speed guy who approaches offense from a non-power perspective. I’d love to see them get Ramiel Tapia at the deadline, though the Rockies would rightfully want something significant in return. Ruiz and/or Gray could at least get the conversation started, depending on Gray’s health. The Rockies need a catcher in the worst way, among other things.
I’m a Z fan. My lone criticism of Friedman is that he never hired a replacement, instead choosing to run the entire show himself. Sometimes you need that other person to bounce ideas off.
niel.marshal
Josiah Gray and / or Keibert Ruiz for Ramiel Tapia? Thats crazy
Orel Saxhiser
I said get the conversation started.

He paid “the price” in rehab. Now time
To pitch. No pun intended
Jeffmathisfirstballothalloffame
That pun was definitely intended…

The quotes “might” have given it away.

Did David Price get a World Series ring last year for skipping out on his teammates the entire year? He better not have, “veteran status” or not.
whyhayzee
Well I’ll ask him but I don’t think he’ll be very keen. Uh, he’s already got one you see.
retire21
“He’s already got one?!”
“Yes. It’s very nice.”
whyhayzee
Good catch. I was worried.
dodgerskingsfan
he got a ring but he’s donating it for charity
Orel Saxhiser
He didn’t skip out on anyone.
costergaard2
Yeah he did
pinstripes17
No, he didn’t
YankeesBleacherCreature
He also decided to donate $1k each to 220 minor leaguers before deciding to opt-out last year. Who cares if he did get a ring or not? That’s an organizational and team decision – not yours.
BlueSkies_LA
Collectively Dodger fans didn’t know a lot about David Price (except for his role in beating us in the Series) but his generosity to minor leaguers last year got our attention, and then the donation of his ring to charity got it again. If anyone still tells you he’s a bad guy, that says a lot more about them then it does about David Price.
JoeBrady
The Boston press hates him. But like you said, that might say more about them than about Price.
StapVars
He’s also got one from the 2018 Red Sox.

Got to love long term deals
Trevor Y
Price did receive a ring but he said he didn’t feel he deserved one so he is auctioning it off for the charity, “the players alliance”
jbryant0693
$32M reliever, WOW. Guess he’ll get about 700k per inning pitched this year, if he doesn’t get injured again.
amk1920
Red Sox are paying half that
mlbdodgerfan2015
And the Dodgers had to take Price if they wanted Betts. So a bit unfair to say $32mm reliever. But all the more reasons not to give out expensive long-term contracts. Bauer could end up being a one year deal.
BlueSkies_LA
And yet teams continue to give out expensive longterm contracts. They must have no idea what they are doing.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Some clearly don’t know what they’re doing.
BlueSkies_LA
They should be consulting with Some Guy on the Internet. He’s never wrong.

I think we can all here collectively run (via polling) the Bad News Bears for a few months until it ends up in bankruptcy in June… Or early July at the latest.
Orel Saxhiser
I have been a David Price fan since the beginning of his career. A warrior and the ultimate team player. He can play for my team anytime. The money he donated to 190 Dodger minor leaguers last summer speaks volumes about his character. There’s nothing fake about him. Dennis Eckersley and the Boston media can go to hell.
awf111969
Eck was still rockin the mullet last time I seen him
whyhayzee
Not even sure what Eck’s point was at the time, but I agree on the Boston media, they’re awful.

The Boston media is a joke. Someone posted earlier this week that Chavis had proven that he was ‘part of the solution’. I’m not writing Chavis off, but he has proven exactly -0-. Then another post, from another writer, that Ottavino was on a roll. He had 3 okay, but shaky outings, followed by one good outing. Not a roll.
But Price was far worse. I am a RW-C, and I hate when race works its way into so many conversations. But there is little doubt in my mind that the Eckersley conversation was tinged with race. Maybe not Eckersley himself, but the entire conversation smelled like ‘uppity’.
That said, Pete Abraham is pretty good, and Lou Merloni is like 99% right. Even if/when he annoys the crap out of me, I know he is likely correct.

It’s simply old-school thinking vs today’s real world. The Yankees had Goose Gossage in spring training camp for many years until he decided to mouth off on players’ attitudes. “Back in my days….” Well, we’re not anymore Goose so nobody can relate to that. Cya!
Orel Saxhiser
Gossage is a typical old-timer who waxes nostalgic about the bad old days. Those people drive me nuts. As much as I love baseball, my main passion is music. I am 63. High school class of ’76. The people I grew up with are still listening to music from when they were in high school. Yet they have the nerve to say modern music sucks when they haven’t heard any. They’re totally out of touch with modern music, just like Gossage is out of touch with modern baseball. If we old-timers want to know about the real world, we need to listen and learn from younger people and not put them down. Trust me, things were not better when I was a kid. Not in baseball. Not in music. Not in life as a whole.

As a RS fan, I didn’t feel we had to trade him and still pick up $16M of his salary. But I am glad we did so.
That said, and ignoring the money angle, I love Price. he had playoff issues earlier, but that happens sometimes. But for the most part, he encompasses exactly what you’d want from a professional athlete.
Ghost Pepper
He was pretty good in 18’s run.
