Blue Jays right-handed reliever David Phelps is dealing with a “significant” lat strain, manager Charlie Montoyo said Friday (via Scott Mitchell of TSN). Montoyo was unable to offer a timeline for Phelps’ return.
Lat strains often lead to lengthy absences for pitchers, and it sounds as if that will be the case for Phelps. The 34-year-old has already gone almost two full weeks without pitching, having most recently taken the mound on May 2.
Phelps, whom the Blue Jays signed for $1.75MM in free agency, delivered outstanding results prior to his placement on the 10-day injured list. Now in his second stint with Toronto (he previously spent time with the club in 2019), Phelps has thrown 8 1/3 innings of two-run ball (one earned) with 15 strikeouts, four walks, eight hits allowed, and four holds. He’s one of seven Blue Jays relievers on the IL, yet the team has still found a way to a 20-16 record.

Jays bullpen deserves so much credit for how it’s performed with this many injuries.
Hopefully a few of these guys can come back before the workload catches up to the rest of the team. A few more starters would help too
DarkSide830
shame, he’ll miss the Philly reunion
Cap & Crunch
Title should should have just said ” David Phelps” and we could have filled in the rest with our brains
Might have been more fun that way.

It is too bad. Phelps was as good as he’s ever been this year.
smuzqwpdmx
Tiny sample that wouldn’t have lasted. The Jays are fortunate to have gotten the best version of him while he was healthy. Earned his small salary even if he doesn’t come back this year.

Jays bullpen have saved the Jays so far in 2021. Unfortunately Phelps is 34 so injury is expected, The Jays need two more upgrades in starters, one elite and one a #3 otherwise the back half of the season isn’t going to be pretty.
Dustyslambchops23
They play the orioles 18 times in the second half of the season and a bunch against the tigers too.
its_happening
And? Jays still need at least one starting pitcher regardless of who they line up against.
Joeypower
And… is not the same to face NY and Oak than Baltimore & Detroit! D.B.
bigdaddyt
Sure do and he’s in aaa right now absolutely dominating the opposition. Think it was someone on the at the letters podcast saying If Manoha continues to throw like he has he’ll get 4-5 total aaa starts then be called up.
jimmertee
Jon Morosi all but guaranteed that Manoah would be a call up this year. He thought he should be pitching out of spring training in the big leagues.
Dexxter
Hope the Jays strike early on a rotation upgrade. It’s an obvious area of weakness and the bullpen results aren’t sustainable.
Ryu, Ray, Matz, Matt Boyd and Pearson/Manoah would look good for the stretch run.
smuzqwpdmx
Make the Tigers throw in Daniel Norris while we’re at it. I wonder what their Price would be.
jimmertee
Manoah yes, Boyd no. Perhaps acquiring A righty like Keller from KC is something the Jays’ brass could pull off.
filthyrich
KC might have as good a shot as the Jays at playoffs this year.
Looking like Tigers, Rockies, Twins falling out of it early.
Pineda, Happ, Shoemaker all upcoming FA, likely to move. Berrios could also move. Rogers. Colome. Still early for the Twins to be calling it?
JGray, Boyd, Fulmer, Givens also some early appeal if we’re limited to Tigers/Rockies for now.
Get in early, gonna need another arm or two closer to deadline, and more options in the mix as the season goes.

Jimmer – preseason you were flashing your self professed expertise that the Jays BP was going to be a disaster.
Nice to see you admit your mistakes.
The Jays need 1 top 3 pitcher not 2. Someone to slot into the top 3 with Ryu and Ray.
jimmertee
No Marko, you are wrong. The Jays are 29th in baseball, yes 29th in starter innings so far this year. That says burnout of the bullpen by midseason, or sooner. They need two starting pitchers, one elite and one a #3 in order to have a shot to win. Its about winning this year, not building or anything else.
Otherwise it is another building season if we are listening to the Shapiro koolaid. lol.
MarkoRock68
You seem to drink your own koolaid alot Jimmer. Pre-season you were bemoaning the pen and it has thus far been fantastic. The Jays do not need a #1 and a # 3. Ryu and Ray fit those roles very well. They need a # 2 period , end of story.
The 15/16 teams would never have survived as many injuries as the Jays have this year and remained competitive.
Why do I bother, you are a lost cause, A legend in your own mind .
jimmertee
And I have never insulted anyone ever in the years of being very accurate in these pages. So why do you insult me and others?
smuzqwpdmx
The Jays need as many adequate arms as they can find to handle the coming further waves of injuries. A #3 would be great of course, but #5s would be a huge help too.
LordD99
Well of course he does.

Mr. Phelps will self-destruct in 10 seconds.

David Phelps is enamored with BBC
oldmansteve
The strain is pretty mild. Phelps just has significant lats.
