9:21pm: Kluber offered some positive news after the game, telling Andy Martino of SNY and other reporters that he didn’t feel any pain during his outing. He added that this problem “doesn’t feel at all like what I dealt with last year.”
7:46pm: The Yankees announced that right-hander Corey Kluber left his start against the Blue Jays on Tuesday with tightness in his pitching shoulder. He’ll undergo an MRI on Wednesday.
Kluber, making his first start since throwing a no-hitter against the Rangers last Wednesday, went just three innings before departing. He allowed two runs on two hits and three walks (with five strikeouts), raising his season ERA to a still-excellent 3.04 over 53 1/3 innings. To this point, the two-time American League Cy Young winner has been a tremendous signing for the Yankees, who gave him a one-year, $11MM guarantee in free agency. They took that gamble after the former Indians ace missed nearly the entire 2019 season because of a fractured forearm and then totaled a mere one inning last year with the team he just no-hit, Texas. Kluber left his first start with the Rangers on account of shoulder tightness and then sat out the rest of the year with a Grade 2 tear of the teres major muscle.
The fact that the 35-year-old Kluber’s shoulder is acting up again is clearly a worrying sign for him and the Yankees, whose rotation has posted a sterling 3.31 ERA and helped them to a 28-19 record. Kluber, Domingo German and Jordan Montgomery have served as highly capable complements to all-world righty Gerrit Cole, and Jameson Taillon’s peripheral numbers suggest his 5.06 ERA will trend in a better direction. But the Yankees now have to wonder how much more they’ll get from Kluber this season as a result of this news.
Pain
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
No he said he there was no pain
And so it goes
::sad face::
Well, with the way injuries are hitting everyone else, we were due.
Hopefully, he just needs some rest/treatment. Either way, it’s a drag. He is throwing really well for us, man. That curve is absurd.
Pitching has been carrying us. Need to get the bats going here. Lost our little winning streak & 1 of our best starters in the same game.
Which – obviously – sucks.
But he was so healthy, coming off that strong season in Texas…
Why is this so unsurprising?
This season sucks. Really hard to watch with so many injuries.
Maybe unsurprising, but still devastating.
There’s 10 headlines on MLBTR front page. 9 are injuries, 1 is about best minor league signings.

Overworked chasing the no-no?
He threw 101 pitches. Typical starter workload.
Somewhere Johan Santana is laughing at the notion that 101 pitches is considered overworked these days.
@Fever: not sure why Santana would be laughing. He lost his age 32 season to a shoulder injury then at 33 pitched a no hitter on 134 pitches, went 2-7 his next 10 starts and never pitched again
Perhaps a more conservative load management would have extended his career and a shot at the HOF. He was pitching quite well in early 2012 before the no- no
Oh geeze..he threw 101 pitchesb
When was the last time made a good signing or trade? Seriously please let me know. Kluber 11 million and now undergoing an MRI. Since resigning D. J. LeMahieu he seems like a completely different player — a six year extension? Jameson Taillon one good start basically. Hicks and Severino have had many injuries since their resignings. Help me.
Luke Voit trade is working out well. Chapman trade and the signing is good. Gerrit Cole has been worth every penny. You can cherry pick the bad ones but the Yankees tend to make good decision.
They gave up Gallegos for Voit , not a bad trade but not a steal. You got me on Cole and Chapman.
Gio Urshela as well. Even Michael Pineda for Jesus Montero was a good trade. The latter gave Seattle nothing.
Love Urshela! Would you really want Pineda back?
No but he was fine for a backend starter. Kind of like Ivan Nova.
Pineda has had good numbers with the Twins
Yanks have made good moves but even if he was hitting good I’m sure the yanks would rather not have Stanton in their team. I will say. Be very careful with judge. I don’t think a long term deal with him would be if it you guys. He’ll consistently get hurt and underachieve in my opinion. Sign gleybar and one of the SS this FA.
Kinda hard to give Cashman credit for signing Cole to the largest pitcher contract in MLB history, considering he’s the same GM who refused to give up Clint Frazier and Andujar for Cole just two years earlier.
If Cashman had traded for Cole back then, the Yanks would probably have one or two more championships and they’d have signed Cole to a much cheaper contract extension than the 9-year $324M contract they ended up giving him.
Overreacting much? It’s a precautionary MRI. Best case: he misses a start. Worst: he rests for a few weeks. Chapman, for one, has been worth every penny.
Perhaps. We’ll see. I hope so.
I’d take Cashman over Anthopolous, you wanna trade?
If the Braves throw in Acuna Jr., I’ll take it.
Fine, but you have to take on the dreadful Ozzie Albies Contract. If you do we will throw in Ian Anderson.
That’ll put us over the CBT, I’ll have to think about that.
Oh wait. You can take Stanton, the best DH ever, to future-proof your team when the NL adopts it. We got a deal!
I think you don’t understand what worst case means.
Because a pitcher getting an MRI always has a worst case far worse than that.
Fair point. I tend not to panic. Could be run-of-the mill soreness or a mild strain. If there are bigger issues, we would’ve known about it sooner and he wouldn’t have pitched today.
Chapman has been worth every Penny except in the playoffs. Chapman has a few devastating blown saves in the playoffs. I remember Devers taking him deep as a 22 year old to win and who can forget last year with Tampa? They need to let him have a little more rest this year so he is fresh come October (if they can afford to do so of course).
Mariano Rivera also blew some important playoffs save opportunities. One cost the Yankees the WS. Nobody is perfect but I’ll take Chapman to close games out any day.
I have to give it to red sox fans. You got some of the best hecklers in the game. My wife and I were driving back from dinner listening to the braves on radio. Pablo Sandoval comes up and amongst the brutal booing someone shouted “I bet you don’t even know kung fu”. we got a good laugh outta that one.
Getting booed makes him a sad panda.
Dorothy Mantooth was a saint!
Sexual harassment….panda
Much needed gem from Morton tonight!
Panda, holy cow is he crushing the ball! Again tonight he’s hitting.
Morton Is looking like the guy the braves expected when they have him a contract too! That makes me happy.
Big Sexy waiting by the phone….
(Munching on a 10 gallon drum of Cheetos, no doubt)….
Say what you want about Bartolo. I once watched him doing pre-game warmups at Citifield. The dude was contorting his body like an Olympic gymnast. Pretty impressive for such a cuddly fella.
The Yankees don’t have the team that the Red Sox have, they have two hitters who hit for high OPS or could be called “clutch” at all. Look at the lineups of the Sox, Rays, and Blue Jays and use that as your pattern to add to your team. You will see next week. Oh and guess what? Chris Sale is about to pitch to live hitters and looks stronger than ever. He’ll be back before the end of June.
No. But GL! Hope the RS can stay in the race all season as it will make it much more interesting.
Yes, the Yankees don’t have the team the Red Sox have because while the sox are getting by with a pitching staff that’s rated far below the Yankees staff, but to your credit the Sox are hitting the heck out of the ball……and while Sale is due back, you really don’t know what you’ll get from him coming off surgery and you forgot to mention that the Yankees get Severino back who was at one time shortly ago the staff Ace!
Should make it interesting the rest of the way…..oh and by the way remember pitching and defense wins in the playoffs and I don’t think the Sox defense is any better than the Yankees!
You haven’t been watching the Red Sox this year, obviously. Our outfield defense is among the best in the AL, our catcher throws out more runners than any other catcher in baseball this year. Bogaerts is excellent at SS, Kike Hernandez and Marwin Gonzalez are excellent at 2B, and young, power-hitting Bobby Dalbec has been excellent 1B. The only question is Devers, but he’s about average now among third basemen, he’s gotten better each year and his range and arm are very good now. Hunter Renfroe has been better in right than Betts ever was, and Verdugo is one of the league leaders in outfield assists. Now we have Danny Santana as our speedster centerfielder, and like the rest of the team, he has been hitting like crazy.
You will see firsthand next week. Sale has looked stronger and fresher than he’s looked in five years, but you’re right, we will see. The big thing now is whether either team gets one of the difference-makers before the deadline (Sherzer or Duffy would be fine!). We have a very strong farm system now, lots to deal.
Remember that your GM doesn’t see anything wrong with a high-strikeout, low-OPS, lack of clutch-hitting offense. The Red Sox have a masterful coach and our GM is Chaim Bloom, the baseball genius behind the Rays. He has built this team with great-hitting, versatile players and very good pitchers, and the Sox have owners who have been active and very successful with midseason trades. That should be interesting (that and the return of Sale, Brazier and Workman).
But the way, thanks Yankees for two of our best pitchers this year, Garrett Whitlock (who was yours but you left him Rule 5 unprotected) has been almost unhittable since April, and Mr. Ottovino, 8th inning guy, hasn’t allowed a run since late April and has 28 KS.
I think in the end it will be the Red Sox and Rays, and maybe the Blue Jays. The Yankees may be there for a wild card, but unless you add a Sherzer AND a few better hitters, you won’t hit in the playoffs.
One thing to say, (powers booth from Tombstone), “Well, bye. “
Giancarlo Kluber
Not a good sign. Once someone has had a shoulder thing, the odds of coming back and coming back healthy are slim. Elbows are one thing and they are easy repair compar d to shoulders. 101 pitches.
Something was up when Kluber started throwing three-quarters, almost sidearm the last few batters he faced. Too bad. His return was a pretty good story.
Johan Santana 2.0
The Indians overworked him.
