“Opportunities at the margins are sometimes available in the near term. Opportunities to make…more significant changes are rarely going to happen until six to eight weeks from now,” Cardinals GM Michael Girsch told Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat and other reporters earlier this week. In short, it doesn’t appear too likely that the Cards will be swinging any notable trades in the near future. As Jones notes, the club hasn’t really made any win-now types of deadline moves in recent seasons, and it remains to be seen if the Cards will change course by July 30 of this year.
St. Louis entered Sunday in first place in the NL Central, in a tight race with the Cubs and Brewers. There is certainly room for upgrades on the Cardinals’ roster, with Jones pointing out that (in particular) the bullpen is lacking depth beyond Genesis Cabrera, Giovanny Gallegos, and Alex Reyes. Adding another middle relief type wouldn’t necessarily count as a headline-grabbing move, and by that same token, a team that’s already in “seller mode” might be more willing to part with a reliever now rather than wait until closer to July 30.
More from the Gateway City…
- Some bullpen help could come from within, as Andrew Miller could be activated from the 10-day injured list this week. The target date may be Thursday for the start of the Cardinals’ series with the Reds, as manager Mike Shildt told reporters (including MLB.com’s Daniel Guerrero) that wants at least one more Triple-A rehab outing. Miller has been on the IL since April 29 due to a blister on his right foot.
- Paul DeJong’s return date is less certain, as Shildt told Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and other reporters yesterday that the shortstop will require a rehab assignment before getting back to the field. A non-displaced left rib fracture sent DeJong to the injured list in the middle of May, and the nature of the injury has kept the Cardinals from pushing too hard: “A non-displaced fracture become a fracture if we don’t take care of it,” Shildt said. DeJong has, at least, been able to take some grounders.
- Pitching prospect Ian Bedell underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this week, as Bedell revealed himself on his Instagram page. The University Of Missouri product was a fourth-round pick for St. Louis in the 2020 draft, so his first minor league season was already canceled by the pandemic, and Bedell only appeared in two games for high-A Peoria before being sidelined with injury. Given the 13-15 month recovery timeline associated with Tommy John procedures, Bedell might face a bit of a squeeze in getting back on the mound before the end of the 2022 minor league season.

They need to trade for a legitimate fourth outfielder and a legitimate starter so they can move KK to the pen. That will shore up all three areas and leave them looking very good to take the Central.
timyanks
need a legitimate third outfielder
Joel Peterson
Team has 3 it needs 4.
Johnnymarty95
Maybe Starling Marte or Corey Dickerson. There’s also Steven Dugger or Raimel Tapia that might be of interest to the Cards.
brod21
Tapia isn’t a free agent until 2024 what incentive would the Rockies have to trade him?
downsr30
Andrew Miller has been out since April 29th with a blister on his foot?!?!? Are you kidding me?!?
What a pathetic loser.
oldmansteve
Dude’s made $78 million and don’t you coach crossfit? Who’s the real loser?
downsr30
Haha not CrossFit, but fitness, yes.
And I guess I didn’t realize that money defines whether you’re a loser or not. In your logic, Marcell Ozuna, Aroldis Chapman, Ray Rice and many others aren’t losers either then, right? Because they made money…
FletcherFan66
There has to be something else aside from the blisters. Someone should check Miller’s corn syrup intake. If it’s above 79.2mL per day, that means his absence is corn syrup related.
SoxRewl
Why are we drawing domestic violence cases into this comparison? That’s a dangerous slippery slope you’re on and discredits your entire argument.
The premise that Andrew Miller is a loser because he gets paid millions of dollars a year to rehab from injuries and pitch a few innings here and there is a faulty one. In fact, it makes him a winner in my book. Lots of money to do no work? Sign me up!
WarkMohlers
Is the corn syrup thing supposed to be funny?
Honest question btw.
FletcherFan66
No, it’s real but no one seems to be talking about it. I have some friends & a cousin that work for some AL and NL West teams. All I will say is that guys like Mike Trout are really embracing the dad bod. Your body is a temple, king. Take your nutrition seriously.
WarkMohlers
Thanks for the heads up. You seem to have the inside info for this corn syrup problem.
As a person with no friends or cousins and a body composition of 80% corn syrup, I was obviously out of the loop.
jimmyz
Get a time machine and tell that to Babe Ruth. There’s plenty of pro athletes that don’t take nutrition seriously and still perform at a high level for the job they are asked to perform. Casey Hampton, former nose tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers, failed a run test on Coach Tomlin’s first day as coach in training camp. The test was to run the length of the football field in under 4 or 5 minutes, pretty easy. After failing Hampton’s response to the media when asked about it was that he doesn’t get paid to run, he gets paid to stop other people from running.
WarkMohlers
Jimmyz. It’s a joke.
Casey Hampton was on the Steelers 6 years before Mike Tomlin, a 4-5 MINUTE 100 yard dash is just him being a jerk.

Bad news for Cardinal fans. MY opinion is that when two teams are crawling straight up my *ss to challenge for first place, improvements should be and need to be made. The Cardinals have been very conservative when making moves to improve the team over the past decade and when they do, they usually fail. Even the Goldschmidt trade did not provide expected dividends. I think Cardinal management is a poor judge of talent and would rather ride the storm out and hope for the best instead of sticking their necks out. Easy for me to say, the only money I invest is through my cable company. St. Louis has dealt several good outfielders away in the past couple of years. First place today, but maybe, just maybe a playoff game or two tomorrow. Just keep the fans interested enough to keep watching. Dewitt has a ton of money, but chooses to keep it, after all, it is a business. Tough luck Cardinal fans. We have a newer version of Connie Mack here (see my other posts concerning Connie Mack).
Prediction: Andrew Miller will come back hurt and go away again. He is already a bad contract.

@jerry. I would say Arenado is working out so far. I’m pretty sure a lot of teams and their fans would like that acquisition,
JerryBird
Yes sir, you are correct, but I am waiting to pass my personal judgement at the end of the season. My concern is that if the Cardinals stand pat and lose, he will do the same in St. Louis as he did in Colorado. He will go on a rant because the Cardinals aren’t spending their the way he wants them to and will demand a trade or opt out. He really wanted to open up the checkbook for the Rockies and they didn’t comply. The same may happen in St. Louis, We’ll see. Hopefully everything works out and the Cardinals get a shot at a ring, maybe even win one. I really would like to see that, but STL management has a tendency to pull back on the harnesses instead of kicking it in.
believeitornot
They let Arozorena go and he’s a big star now.

Cards made a splash and picked up Goldschmidt… then Arenado. They got Miller. Kim has been better in the states than he was in Korea. They won the Voit / Gallego trade.
JerryBird
Arenado, so far, has been a splash, but as I mentioned, I prefer to wait on that. Much can happen from now until the end of the season. Goldschmidt has been more of a mist or a sprinkle than a splash. Miller, overall, has been a wash. Kim, meh. The Voit / Gallego trade is pretty much a break even as both have been a plus for their new team.
I am more interested in making a push for better success now. The Cardinal Brass needs to win something this year and watching the world pass by without doing anything doesn’t give the fans much hope with the wait-and-see attitude.
Being better next year will not matter if there isn’t any baseball.
Cardsfanatik redux
Can you imagine how terrible this BP would be without Gallegos? Voit mashed for what consists of a little over a season, and is now injured every day. I love that Luke found success, but I’d STILL make that trade again.

Well nobody expected any team to run away with the NL Central. Before the season started pretty much every analyst predicted a jumbled mess of four teams right around .500 and the Pirates a couple country miles behind and so far that’s pretty much what’s happening so there’s really not much reason to trade away significant prospects for rental players just to lose in the NLDS if they even get there. Now if they could get a package deal of a starting pitcher with a few years of contractual control and a rental outfielder that’s a different story. Honestly I think the Cards will be fine in the next few seasons though this one might be a bit of a wash. The rest of the division seems like they will get worse over the next few years and the Cards have enough talent to take advantage of that in the near future.
17dizzy
I agree— the Cardinals currently do have enough talent to compete for the Central Division Title. And—- if they stay healthy— I see both Wainwright and Molina coming back in 2022. However—— I do hope the Cardinals could pick up a rental top starting pitcher. Maybe even 2 rental stars this season. Rental stars they would like to expose to the Busch Stadium Crowds and the current Cardinal everyday starting lineup. In hopes that would entice one or even both to resign with the Cardinals for 2022 and beyond. Such as they did with Matt Holliday.
Now 2022 is another story!!! DO NOT EXTEND MATT CARPENTER!! Get rid of Andrew Miller. Put Tyler Webb and other bullpen fillers in Triple A. Layne Thomas needs to spend the rest of the year in the minors for 2021 because he is just not ready for the Majors both Offensively and Defensively.
2022 Should be the Year of the Cardinals!!! No Matt Carpenter to have to baby sit. They’ll have the current starting lineup with maybe the exception of DeJong (unless he proves he can hit better than .165 to at least over .250), maybe Trevor Storey if he can get healthy).
The Cardinals currently have only 1 bench player hitting over .200 and he’s the backup catcher. 2022 will have Sosa, Rondon, Williams, for sure.
Starting pitching could be super——
Flaherty—Wainwright—-Reyes— Martinez—and “Matt Scherzer”!!!!
Gallegos, Kim, Ponce, etc.
Jordan as the Closer. Ponce backup closer.
That team could actually exist at the end of 2021 and carry over to 2022 for a full season!!
“That’s a winner!!!”
Cardsfanatik redux
They will not extend Carpenter. Everyone including Carp knows that. That’s 18.5 million coming off the books. That’s a decent starter’s salary. They won’t be signing Trevor Story to a 10 year contract, which is what he’ll likely take, unless he takes the Arenado buddy discount, which I doubt. DeJong is fine. He is an excellent fielder who hits for power. You don’t need him to lead off and hit .275, you have Edman for that. Max Scherzer would be intriguing, but there are a few guys that will be FA’s next year that are as well. C Mart is a FA too. Robbie Ray is a lefty high strikeout guy. Aaron Sanchez is pitching well in SF. Jon Gray is a FA, and he’s had success in Colorado, so he can’t be all bad. With Carpenter, C Mart and Miller coming off the books in 2022, they have a little money, but don’t forget, Colorado is picking up Arenado’s tab for 2021 too. So the Redbirds have to start paying more on that next year as well. Should be interesting to see where they go. I’d like a mulligan on the Adolis Garcia dump though. I don’t think you’ll miss Arozarena, once Liberatore starts throwing shut-outs at the MLB level.
bighiggy
Adolis definately hurts, aroz is a wait and see. His non playoff numbers are just okay and liberatore hasnt even pitched yet. Can we please dump webb, lane, and William’s already. At least carp tries, but he would be next. I’d see if I could trade a ponce and Williams for a Frazier from the yankees. Then trade lane, helsley, angel rondon and malcom nunez for rodriquez from the pirates. Or a mega trade of all those people and nogowski to the pirates for their Frazier and rodriguez. They need a different outfielder and another bullpen piece; and ponce, Sanchez, lane, William’s, angel rondon, helsley, malcom nunez, nogwski and ascanio are all pieces the cards could use to improve those 2 things.
