Braves righty Huascar Ynoa is headed to the injured list after suffering a broken right hand, manager Brian Snitker told MLB.com’s Mark Bowman and other reporters. The Braves made the official announcement shortly after Snitker’s meeting with the press, as Ynoa was placed on the 10-day IL and righty Edgar Santana was called up from Triple-A.
Ynoa broke his hand after punching the dugout in frustration following a tough outing yesterday against the Brewers, and will now spend approximately two months or more in recovery. It’s a very unfortunate setback for a player who has become an unexpectedly big part of Atlanta’ rotation this season.
Even after yesterday’s struggles against Milwaukee (five earned runs allowed on nine hits and two walks over 4 1/3 innings), Ynoa still had a 3.02 ERA/3.28 SIERA over 44 2/3 total frames of work for the Braves. Though Ynoa has been allowing a lot of hard contact, he has delivered an above-average 27.9% strikeout rate and 6.1% walk rate.
Considering Ynoa had only a 7.30 ERA in 24 2/3 innings for the Braves in 2019-20, his emergence was a major plus for an Atlanta pitching staff that has struggled to stay healthy and pitch effectively. Since Mike Soroka’s timetable to return from the IL is still uncertain, the path was clear for Ynoa to remain in the rotation prior to his own injury. With Ynoa out, the Braves could turn to some combination of rookie southpaw Tucker Davidson (who was called up earlier today), Bryse Wilson, or Kyle Wright to fill the open spot in the rotation.
ItsStillMillerPark
Brewers tagged him for some runs but this kids got some nasty stuff. Bright future ahead
48-team MLB
I doubt he has a future in Atlanta now. This is absolutely inexcusable. This team is already without Soroka and Ynoa just put the entire season in jeopardy because of one bad start.
TommyHawkBraves
If he comes back in a couple of months and pitches like he was, they’re not getting rid of him out of spite.
48-team MLB
You have to put the team first and he clearly didn’t. He wouldn’t even be in the rotation if Soroka wasn’t hurt.
jkurk_22
Actually if Soroka and Ynoa were both healthy the obvious candidate to loose his spot is sucky Smyly. I’m still pissed the Braves even signed him, and especially for as much as they did.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Wow. This is terrible news and incredibly selfish.
Neil G
I would not call it selfish, just immature.
BravesNutter01
No, it’s just stupid.
brandons-3
I think it’s a little of both. When you’re young, you don’t fully understand the impact or consequences of your words or actions. That is to say, there are selfish things that are done, but from those selfish and self-inflicted errors, wisdom and maturity come.
SoCalBrave
The entire season? That’s an extreme exaggeration.
Ynoa has never pitched more than 116 innings so he was most likely not gonna pitch the whole season and into the playoffs.
While unfortunate and definitely not optimal, we can now have Ynoa hopefully return rested and capable of providing help at the end of the season, either as a starter or reliever.
48-team MLB
He had pitched great aside from only two bad starts (in Chicago and in Milwaukee). This starting rotation is already not deep enough. The bullpen is already being overused. Now the guy who has been our best starter this season is out for at least two months. There is no sugarcoating this. It is absolutely inexcusable garbage and he should not be paid for the games he’s going to miss because of his own stupidity.
brandons-3
Best case now is it gives Wright, Wilson, or Davidson a golden opportunity to establish themselves in the rotation. Wright and Wilson have been yo-yo’d from the majors to Gwinnett the last few years, so at this point it’s time to see if either can become a fixture in the rotation.
BrittinghamSports
He absolutely has a future in Atlanta. This is terrible and I can’t believe he did it but the Braves are not giving up on a power pitcher who throws 99 mph and has been dominant on the mound and at the plate this season. He made a stupid mistake out of anger but he is 22 years old. I think he just learned his lesson. He will pitch again for the Braves this season and will be with the team for a long time. This is the worst part of Ynoa’s story with the Braves. The best part is that the Braves acquired him from the Twins as a 17 year old and all they had to give up was 2 months of Jaime Garcia. The Twins picked up all of Garcia’s remaining multi-million dollar salary on top of that. Even with this injury I bet the Twins wish they had a do-over. Especially considering they never won with Garcia and he has been out of the league for sometime now. Ynoa was a 17-year old that was never really supposed to make it. His story is amazing. We weren’t talking about a 17 year old Acuna or Albies. Most people probably thought he would never make a major league roster. Then he grew and his velocity grew with him. He is also never going to have problems with walks. All he does is attack the strike zone. That’s a good thing for a guy that throws 99 consistently and can pitch 7 innings at a time.
Buddy “Bud” Hull
People make mistakes. He’s obviously an emotional guy (kid?) and took it out on himself. It sucks and I’m sure he’s even more upset now, but he flashed some real stuff enough times out there to not make it a career ender or whatever overreaction we feel like typing about in response. I bet there’s nothing you could say that would make him feel any lower about punching a wall and breaking his hand because of what essentially boiled down to a bad luck outing. If the Braves are smart they’ll help coach him through it.
8ManLineupNoPitcherNoDH
As Fred Sanford would say: “You biggg dummy!”
lamars
Haha! That was the exact words out of my mouth. Then it was followed by what an idiot!
802Ghost
How did he break his hand?
RunDMC
According to Bowman’s tweet – he did it punching the dugout after exiting the game………….(sigh) — “he’ll miss a couple of months”
My goodness.

A broken hand???? Nooooo

so much for me thinking he might win the RoY off this hot start
John Smoke
He’s not a rookie
LarryJ4
Really wtf is with the injuries! This is bananas! Braves are about to be down to Double A pitching staff!
MasterShake
But they’ve got all those studs at AAA that are too valuable to trade! /s Braves are probably finished. Not on this injury alone their whole rotation is a mess.
bravesfan
Oh lord…. How? Brutal!!
Dan Rogers
Punched the bench

I’m starting to think we may not win the series this year.
arthur blank_for owner
lol ya think?!
RunDMC
Not for nothing, but Ynoa wouldn’t have pitched in the Mets series, starting Sunday.
mlb1225
So, what are the Braves willing to offer for Tyler Anderson?
RunDMC
Josh Tomlin and Luke Jackson and an empty middle seat – one way only.
48-team MLB
Probably some mid-level prospect. I doubt they would give up anything of serious value.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
They’d probably take over his remaining salary. Probably not much else. They might throw in a container of dubble bubble as a consolation to the Pirates dugout.
mchappell
We can’t have anything nice fellas.
vacommish
Tucker Davidson was just called up for Biddle. He has always been a starter. Wonder if he gets a shot here since he is up. Otherwise, Wright or Wilson?
48-team MLB
I’ve seen enough of Wright and Wilson. It needs to be either Davidson or Muller. There’s no guarantee that either of those two will be successful but the Braves need to try something different at this point. Wright and Wilson have had their chances and have done basically nothing aside from Wilson’s one fluke start in the NLCS.
Neil G
Muller has not pitched well so far at Gwinnett, though his last start was a bit better.
TommyHawkBraves
It’s easy to forget that Wilson is still only 23 years old. Davidson and Wright are both 25.
Wilson’s last start was really good too. He’ll definitely get more opportunities to try to build on that.
48-team MLB
I don’t care so much about the age. Wilson had rarely made adjustments from start to start. I’ve seen basically the same thing in most of his starts…and it hasn’t been good.
Neil G
Exactly, Tommy. And Wilson has altered his pitches from the beginning of his ML career where he was mostly a FB/slider pitcher.
SoCalBrave
The same could have been said about Ynoa prior to this year.
I want to see more of Wilson and also Wright, in that order.
48-team MLB
Ynoa never really got back-to-back starts before this year. Wilson has had times where he’s had a start three straight turns through the rotation and hasn’t made adjustments. That’s the difference.
bravesiowafan
The dude has changed his pitching repertoire and it’s helped him this season, if that isn’t an adjustment then there isn’t any as a pitcher. He’s changed his pitch mix and has all but dropped the flat 4 seam. Wilson has upside still again like I said about the catcher post yesterday Braves fans need to stop over reacting to young players not starting off as the best pitcher or hitter in the league. Ynoa, Wilson, Alex Jackson, Pache, Austin Riley, and plenty more seem to get written off after the teeny tiniest taste of the bigs. This team is young they aren’t all going to bud into instant MLB players this just isn’t how prospects work. Can you imagine if glavine, Maddox or smoltz had no chance to grow.like it seems every fanatical Braves fan thinks “they must preform at once or they suck because our playoff window is now” be rational not a moron it’s may we are 4-5 weeks in on a 6-7 month season.
Neil G
One of the other kids (Ynoa is still a kid) will be pushed into rotation. I think Wilson has inside track but if Tucker shines, he might get a long look. Wright has not pitched particularly well so far at Gwinnett, so he might be last on that list but still in mix.
48-team MLB
Wilson hasn’t pitched particularly well at the Major League level. Someone else needs to get a shot.
posty
I am guessing he never has watched “Bull Durham”…
BravesNutter01
Nuke Laloosh made it too the show, broke his hand punching the dugout and was never heard from again.
HappyLittleTrees
I hear he runs a small resort in Zihuantanejo, Mexico, where he takes his guests out fishing in the boat he fixed up.
Gwynning
Anything flies that far oughta have a damn stewardess on it… the ironic part is Nuke punched the wall with his left hand.
Neil G
Ynoa has lots of talent but this illustrates he is still young (if he broke hand punching something after a bad start).
Baseball 1600
Overpay for a package of Alex Wood and Anthony DeSclafani. It’s the only option… lol
PapiShango
Cubs have Davies. He’s in a contract year.
lamars
And yet he isn’t pitching like it.
Neil G
According to article from TC, Tucker will start tomorrow. So now we know why Tucker was called up as opposed to a reliever, although Braves have called up a reliever too (Santana)
lamars
Is Davidson a good prospect? I know about Wright and Wilson, but not enough on Davidson. lol, I thought he was an outfielder.
Neil G
Tucker is a top 10 Braves prospect, like #8 or #9. He is not a MLB pipeline top 100 prospect. Take the latter with grain of salt because Ynoa wasn’t a MLB pipeline top 100 prospect either.
lamars
Thanks!
Balzenuf
dumba$$ should be fined the remainder of his pay for the season
Devlsh
Tucker’s numbers in AAA this year: two starts, 14 innings, 7 hits, 3 BBs, 14 Ks.
The Braves depth of young hurlers could still withstand this.
solaris602
So do we now have to pad all hard surfaces in the dugouts and clubhouses to prevent players from breaking their hands? If I’m an owner or GM I’m giving that some serious consideration right about now.
reebop989
Dugout wall 1, Huascar Ynoa 0.
BravesNutter01
Trade Ynoa after he gets back in the rotation, which would be Ynoa being dumb and the Braves dumber. Can I get an Amen from the nose bleed seats!
reebop989
Does he forfeit pay for a self-inflicted injury?
48-team MLB
He definitely should. It’s absolutely atrocious.
Brew’88
Bumgarner had to.
RunDMC
Do you mean his rookie contract in which he’s outperformed already (1.3 WAR so far)?
48-team MLB
It doesn’t matter. He is missing multiple months due to a self-inflicted injury. He should not be paid.
Neil G
I’m no expert on players’ union rules, but I’d be shocked if Braves could stop pay even if they wanted to. And I’d be shocked if Braves would want to stop payment on a kid with low salary and bright future, hopefully in Braves uni.
1984wasntamanual
I think it’s more than 1.3 if you’re going by BbRef and factor in his offensive production.
lamars
Yeah, I couldn’t see the players union allowing that even if they should.
Doxie
Quick, send a scout to Mexico and find Bartolo !!!
getrealgone2
What a bozo.
bravesnation nc
Kid was frustrated. He is not the first or the last to injure themselves after having a bad game.
48-team MLB
That doesn’t excuse it. He put Atlanta’s entire season in jeopardy.
getrealgone2
Have you ever heard of hyperbole?
48-team MLB
Atlanta already did not have enough depth in the starting rotation. Now the most reliable starter to this point in 2021 is out for at least two months because he couldn’t control his temper after a rough start. That is definitely putting the entire season in jeopardy.
pinstripes17
Exaggeration much? Wow you need to get a grip.
bravesnation nc
Even more of a reason to solidify your bullpen. Bryce Wilson will take his spot.
Neil G
As I posted below, Tucker Davidson will start game tomorrow and rotation pushed back.
If Tucker has a good outing, I suspect he will get another go in rotation. If he has a bad outing, all bets are off. Wilson could come up for another spot in rotation in that case or they give Tucker another shot.
TradeAcuna
As I said, down the drain, they go.
Goose
Ynoa was really behind on the depth chart and got a huge break. Now he may have ruined his shot. It is a question now if the next person up seizes their opportunity.. If they do he may get shifted to the pen or back to AAA for some maturing.
Datashark
The dugout bench turned out ok, no injuries from incident although huascar understands the bench was not responsible party.
MasterShake
Cole Hamels owes Atlanta some work.
48-team MLB
If Hamels really wanted another shot with Atlanta then he would need to pitch for $1 million or less. Otherwise it’s not worth the risk for the Braves.
AHH-Rox
Rockies should offer Jon Gray for a good AA Braves pitching prospect. If not now, at least when they get Freeland back in a couple weeks.
48-team MLB
We definitely need some help here in Atlanta but I honestly have no idea what the plan is.
WouldSettleForWildcard
Forget the rotation, how are the Braves going to replace Ynoa’s bat (.353 BA and 1.118 OPS)?
bhambrave
To quote my wife, “Oh Brother”.

I punched the wall, and the wall won. Wall 1 Ynoa 0
Scotty Bravo
Can we designate Will Smith please? Melancon is making $3 mil with a .86 era and what 12 saves?!!!
Scotty Bravo
Were pecota projections correct? 4th place in the east winning 82 games? I hope they can turn it around, but the pen is in need
SoCalBrave
It’s not the pitching that’s letting the team down.
We need to hit.
Where’s Chipper?
5 straight losses at home is inexcusable.
Fred McGriff
However, the bullpen does not have as much depth as last year. Unfortunately we are not as solid in the bullpen as a result of not having O’Day & Melancon, and not starting the year with Greene, and then having Martin injured. These are irrefutable facts. Furthermore, no matter which way you look at it we are missing another bat out of the lineup. Duvall’s OBP is poor, however he has 8hr and 29 rbi’s so far this season, with Duvall going to the Marlins and Markakis retiring, we are definitely missing a power bat.
