The Braves announced Tuesday that they’ve claimed right-handed reliever Jay Flaa off waivers from the Orioles, who’d designated him for assignment over the weekend. The move fills Atlanta’s 40-man roster.
Flaa, who’ll turn 29 in a month, was selected to the big league roster for the first time in his career last month. The Orioles’ sixth-round pick in 2016, he made his MLB debut on April 27, tossing 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief with a pair of walks and a strikeout.
That was Flaa’s lone appearance before the Orioles designated him for assignment in order to open a roster spot for waiver claim Brandon Waddell. While Flaa has struggled in a total of 56 2/3 frames at the Triple-A level, he was excellent at both Double-A and Class-A Advanced while rising through the Orioles’ system. He’s tallied 260 1/3 professional innings since being drafted out of North Dakota State University, working to a 3.49 ERA with an above-average 26.7 percent strikeout rate but a somewhat bloated 11.2 percent walk rate.
Flaa’s fastball sat 93.2 mph in his lone MLB appearance, and he also showed a slider and splitter that day. Because he was selected to the MLB roster for the first time this year, he still has all three minor league option years remaining.
DarkSide830
really?
thebaseballfanatic
They already signed Tanner Roark, to put this into perspective.
That’s how badly they need pitching depth.

getrealgone2
Too bad it wasn’t Flavor Flav.
FletcherFan66
Seems like a very Flaa’d pitcher
neo
That’s not very nice. We all have our Flaa’s.
geotheo
The Braves had an opening on the roster. Hence a low risk move. Of course the next time the Braves have to make a 40 man roster move, guess who goes? Oh and by the way, what team is Ashton Goudreau on this week?
timmy11
As an Orioles fan this is amazing
brandons-3
Jim Johnson, Darren O’Day, Kevin Gausman, Tommy Milone, and now Flaa. The Braves just have a knack for bringing in former Orioles.
jbigz12
Chaz roe as well!
jbigz12
I mean I’m pretty indifferent as an Orioles fan. Not sure how it could be amazing. I would have had no problem with Flaa coming back as minor league depth. But this is really inconsequential for us.
If anyone needs to go—it’s Elias man crush from Houston. Rio Ruiz just isn’t going to make it. I’d give Jam Jones or Bannon a chance to show what they have.

Al didn’t do it…so it must not be a completely stupid move…those are all reserved for BigAl….
ChristianRocker
As a Braves fan who has been watching this awful bullpen all season, I’m happy to see anything being done rather than nothing. Come trade deadline I wanna see some big moves though.
SFGiantsfan28
Must be pretty Flaa for a white guy
bravesnation nc
All I want to know is if he throws strikes. Don’t care about Velo or “Wipe Out Slider” or any of those other worthless cliche’s that are forced down your throat as a viable explanation for picking a guy up. Not expecting him to be Trevor Hoffman or Lee Smith.
Mrtwotone
Dumpster Divin’ Anthopolous! Maybe they will get rid of Biddle now, that dude hasn’t been good in a few years. Also why is Bryse wilson starting today instead of Max Fried?
Neil G
They moved the rotation back a day so that Smyly would not pitch 3rd game vs Jays. So Wilson will start, Fried tomorrow then (I believe) Morton.
Mrtwotone
@Neil G
Thank you for the information. I really appreciate it brother! It makes sense.
bravesnation nc
11M for that guy he is a one a done. Increased his value in a small sample size in SF last year and cashed in. Check Smyly’s stats on BB Reference, he has never been good. Now Schezer and Verlander are FA’s after the season. That is worth 11M on the bottom end.
Neil G
I got my information from multiple sources so I’m sure about the reason for Wilson’s start. To me it says a lot that Braves trust Wilson to pitch against Jays more than they do Smyly. The excuse is that Jays are a RH dominant lineup, so Wilson has the advantage over Smyly against this team. But again, Smyly is the 11M vet..
bravesnation nc
May be the Vet but that’s what I love about the game. You have the back of the BB Card for a guy at the point in his career he is not over the hill or just had a bad season. He is just not that good of a pitcher. As early as 2019 he changed 3 teams. Heck at least Tehran ate a couple innings. LMAO

Can never complain anytime you get an NDSU alum!

This could be a nice pick up.
