The Braves announced that they have released right-hander Nate Jones and outrighted infielder Sean Kazmar Jr. Additionally, righty Carl Edwards Jr. has elected free agency. The Braves designated him for assignment May 8.
The 35-year-old Jones was designated to make room for Edwards, who didn’t last long on the Braves’ roster. Edwards made one appearance and failed to make a good impression, as he allowed three earned runs on three hits in a third of an inning against the Phillies on May 7. Also a former, Cub, Padre and Mariner, Edwards will return to the open market with a 3.68 ERA and a strong 32.8 percent strikeout rate against a 13.8 walk rate over 181 major league innings.
Jones, another minor league signing, earned a spot on the Braves’ roster after an excellent spring training. But the former White Sox standout struggled in Atlanta across 9 2/3 frames, causing the club to go in a different direction. Jones allowed five runs (four earned) on seven hits and eight walks against seven strikeouts as a Brave.
Kazmar, a fifth-round pick of the Padres way back in 2004, climbed to the majors for the first time since 2008 this season, though the 36-year-old made a mere three appearances and collected two plate trips to the plate. He’s a .259/.313/.371 hitter with 98 home runs in 6,619 minor league PA.

health permitting, Jones will appear with someone else’s parent club by year’s end.

Tigers have 8 relievers worse than him, but doubt they will sign him

So the Braves either demoted or cut 3 different players… but who are they bringing up to replace them? I know Jones was cut to make room for Edwards so only 2 guys should be coming up but still… Who are those 2 players going to be. There’s now way either of Shane Greene or Tyler Flowers are ready yet. Maybe some 2-way combination of Newcomb, Wilson and Wright? It would be nice to know who is going to be added to the roster instead of just knowing the players who are removed. I also don’t know how these cuts are taking place but somehow Jesse Biddle is still on the roster. Biddle has been nothing but purely terrible for years now. I would take Jones, Edwards, Kazmar, Wright, Wilson and Newcomb all over Biddle. I would probably take some other random minor leaguers has well. What has Biddle’s ERA been over the last few seasons? 8.00+? I would rather know who they cut these players for more than anything though.

Martin, possibly Ender or Heredia

Bro, has it ever occurred to you that if MLBTR knew, they would’ve included the corresponding additions? I’d say there’s a pretty solid chance ATL hasn’t announced their corresponding roster additions yet, hence the lack of inclusion in this blurb. You sound like a delightful person. Lmao
Neil G
Camargo was called up. Braves are reportedly going to bring up either Wilson or Wright to pitch tonight. I haven’t seen anything official on the latter.
Neil G
Wilson was called up and is starting tonight. He pitched a good game for Gwinnett in his first outing at AAA.

I just have a feeling Edwards didn’t want to be in Atlanta. Just a hunch!
Braves Butt-Head
He signed with them again after being outrighted
DrDan75
Edwards is at that stage of his career where he’s going to bounce around from team to team and bounce back and forth between the bigs and the minors for a while before eventually being released for good. This is what happens to most major leaguers who aren’t stars. His numbers don’t look too bad, so someone will no doubt give him another shot.
He had some good years and has done better than most do.

Huh?…a bunch of low cost minor league signings to replace major league talent for a legit World Series Contender didn’t quite work out…Imagine that smh
802Ghost
Top shelf didn’t work for the Falcons either. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn’t.
arthur blank_for owner
Agreed…but what Top Shelf free agent signings did the Falcons even make in the last 10 years lol?….Michael Turner was the closest to top shelf and it actually worked out; I wouldn’t label any others as top shelf at all personally
ahale224
Alex Mack and Todd Gurley were both 3x pro bowlers the Falcons signed in free agency. Obviously Gurley wasn’t who he used to be, but Mack was a stud for years, it’s just not a sexy position. Your point was well taken, I’m just pointing them out.
arthur blank_for owner
ahhh Alex Mack yes…that was a legit top shelf signing that worked great. Gurley was only signed for 5mil and was damaged goods from the start
getrealgone2
They just signed Greene, you dolt.
slowcurve
Yes, but after Plan A failed.
DarkSide830
what a shame, they didn’t go big on all 26 roster spots. sheesh no one here seems to underrated budgeting.
arthur blank_for owner
Greene, O’Day, Melancon vs. Jones, Edwards JR. and the like? Who would you take?…. Forget the other 26 Free agents you mentioned but how about resign your own at least NO?….at least 50% your own, we barely got a 3rd our own and that was lucky looking at his contract
John Smoke
So you don’t understand low risk moves hmm
arthur blank_for owner
they’re not Low Risk when they increase your Loss column no?
BigFred
Kazmar waited all those years to get back to the show and only got two plate appearances.
gbs42
A bit disappointing to be sure, but how many players would be thrilled to make it back for even that short stint?
birdsfan415
nooo not Kazmar, hopefully he can get more PA

Agree with Arthur, you can’t keep going to the “Dollar Tree”for groceries and essentials.
Legit club that had a lights out BP. Shoulda signed Greene and Melancon. Starting pitching is suspect has been for years. Solid vets to fortify the late innings is how it’s down late in the season.
Blauser
Melancon signed for less to play in SD though because he wanted to live there. It takes both parties to do the deal.
bravesnation nc
Melancon wanted to be on a good club. It didn’t hurt that a club in Cali was interested. He would have stayed but remember who closed in SF after Melancon? Will Smith did and with the contact you gave smith can you justify that for the 8th inning and your closer making 1.5/ 2M in Melancon? I admit I was bullish when they traded for him but he got the job done period and that merits respect. Everyone had they’re role last year and it dominated. This year it’s plug and play explained by the tired cliches from the organization. “It’s early in the season” “ Guy has lights out stuff” and blah, blah. 1 game from the World Series was this squad. You double down maintain what was your strength and work to improve in other areas. This Scrap Heap, waiver wire stuff doesn’t pan out all the time.
GabeOfThrones
Watching the Braves bullpen completely implode again. They did this two years ago, and had to scramble to fix the bullpen midseason, which cost a ton of prospect capital. This is a failure on AA’s part. A team with World Series hopes can’t have a garbage bullpen like this. They’ll have to blow more prospect capital to fix it on the fly again, which will leave their farm system thin after years of international signing restrictions. You can’t screw things up so bad when you’re a mid-market team. He’s done lots of good things as GM, but all these bullpen blows falls squarely on his shoulders.

Band-Aide on a sucking chest wound! Webb, Jones, Edwards, and so on. You could see all that preseason PFP worked out great in the 8th. I just hope Martin and Greene aren’t rushed to Show because of panicking. That spells future IL stints.
