Although outfielder Mike Yastrzemski suffered a mild oblique strain Sunday, the Giants are hopeful he’ll avoid the 10-day injured list, manager Gabe Kapler told Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle and other reporters. The Giants expect Yastrzemski to miss five to six games, but if he’s not ready beyond then, an IL placement may become necessary. Yastrzemski entered 2021 off back-to-back highly productive campaigns, and though he struggled at the outset of this season, his numbers began turning around before his injury. He has slashed .215/.303/.468 with four home runs in 89 plate appearances.
Here’s more regarding San Francisco and a couple other West Coast franchises:
- The Giants put right-hander Johnny Cueto on the IL on April 15 with a Grade 1 lat strain, and he’ll sit out for at least a couple more weeks. Kapler revealed Cueto won’t return until May 9 at the earliest, which means he’ll wind up missing at least four starts, Slusser notes. San Francisco’s expectation was that Cueto would only miss two turns when he landed on the shelf. When healthy, Cueto has contributed to what has been an excellent Giants rotation with 20 innings of 1.80 ERA ball and a 24.3 percent strikeout rate against a 5.4 percent walk rate.
- The Mariners have placed lefty Nick Margevicius on the 10-day IL with left shoulder inflammation and recalled righty Robert Dugger, the team announced. Margevicius’ IL trip comes one day after a disastrous performance in Boston, where he gave up four earned runs on two hits and four walks in a third of an inning. In five appearances (three starts) and 12 innings this year, Margevicius has been tattooed for 16 runs (11 earned) on 13 hits and seven walks. The Mariners are likely to plug righty Ljay Newsome into their rotation to take Margevicius’ place, manager Scott Servais suggested (via Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times). Newsome has held his own across four relief appearances this season, having allowed two earned runs on nine hits with 11 strikeouts against one walk over 10 2/3 frames.
- The Athletics activated Mike Fiers from the IL on Monday, but the longtime starter will work out of their bullpen for the time being, manager Bob Melvin informed reporters (including Martin Gallegos of MLB.com). That means the A’s will stick with a five-man rotation consisting of Sean Manaea, Chris Bassitt, Frankie Montas, Jesus Luzardo and Cole Irvin. Fiers – who missed the first few weeks of the season with a lumbar strain – will try to bounce back from a disappointing showing 2020 showing in which he notched a 4.58 ERA/5.41 SIERA in 59 innings.

Please keep Newsome in over Margevicius, long term…

Jeeze…..
For a non-contact sport where runners are not allowed to slide into defenders covering a base, it’s interesting that MLB seems to have more injuries than NFL teams have after games in which players are knocking each other around.

In the NFL, crashing into big fat guys cushions the fall. Players expect the contact and are braced for it.

16 games vs. 162 games

The first player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to serve as a starting pitcher while leading MLB in home runs laid down a lovely bunt single to open the sixth inning. He also struck out the final five batters he faced. On days when he’s pitching, Shohei Ohtani is unquestionably the best show in baseball. That’s remarkable, considering he bats directly in front of the generation’s best player. Enjoy watching him because players like him come along about as often as a pandemic.

Not wrong but what does this have to do with the article

West notes. That’s why I posted it here. It’s all connected.

He had a rough bottom half of the 1st but Madden stuck with him.

His rebounding from the adversity was impressive. Maybe it pays off in the long run.

I love how he is finally learning to trust his starting pitchers now that he’s not in Chicago…

I agree wholeheartedly. Ohtani is a perfect example of how we don’t “NEED” to have a designated hitter to REPLACE pitchers in the batting order. It’s been systematically ingrained into the sports mindset that “pitchers can’t hit”. They are baseball players. They can hit, they’ve done so in their formation years. They just need to practice & keep practicing, just like everyday position players do.If MLB wants to ADD (keep) the DH to the lineup, fine. Let’s just end this dribble about pitchers can’t (shouldn’t) hit.

It’s impressive what the A’s and the Royals are doing so far this season considering their payrolls. A’s are 23rd with $85.5m and Royals are 22nd with $90.5m. A’s are in first in the West at 15-8 and Royals are in first in the Central at 14-7.

Stick Scherzer atop either of those rotations at the trade deadline and things might get really interesting. Angels, Jays, Yankees, Red Sox, too.
prov356
Yeah, although I like the Nats so I hope they can turn things around and keep him. I was at Nats stadium last Monday and it was hard to watch what the Cards did to their pitching…16-4 loss.

prov356, If they were to lose Turner or Soto alongside Strasburg for an extended period, it would make sense to move Max in July and maybe bring him back in 2022. With all the teams needing SP, maximize (pun intended) his rental value. He would be THE guy for one of those AL teams to get.

Totally agree that he could help a contender come mid-season. Hopefully the Angels are in that mix but they don’t have a track record of picking up needed pitching.
chalk73
I think the last time they made a significant mid season signing for a pitcher was 2012. Zack Greinke from the Brewers for Jean Segura, Johnny Hellweg, and Ariel Peña.
chalk73
And then there was John Candelaria back in 85. It’s about time they make a mid season trade

Looks like a different kind of Angels team. On offense, Ohtani and Walsh are so good there’s no need to think about rushing Adell and Marsh. It also means Pujols and Upton don’t have to be big wheels. If those two combine for .750 OPS, the offense is more than adequate. I love all that veteran leadership on the infield. The veteran presence, in general, is fantastic on the roster. Add Schertzer to Ohtani to the top of the rotation pitching and the rotation would fall into place. Plenty of candidates to be stud #3 in October (I’m bullish on Quintana having a solid year). It’s just an interesting vibe watching the team play. Minasian deserves credit for not trying to be too splashy over the winter. He got guys who complement the nucleus. The future looks bright starting with now. Not a bad time to be a fan of the Angels or any California MLB team.

Cueto for Finnegan? Or trading for Zobrist? Those moves seemed to be pretty notable deadline deals

I agree Cey Hey. Losing Rendon and Trout at the same time obviously hurt. Heaney seems to have found his groove. I’m concerned about Canning and the bull pen to get us through the hoop. If we picked up a guy like Sherzer and a strong reliever, we have a chance. We have options with Rodriguez in the rotation too but we need him in the pen right now.

I hope Johnny Cueto pitches forever. There is something very enjoyable about watching him pitch well, coming from a Brewers fan who watched him a lot as a Red.
