APRIL 19: Marte suffered a non-displaced fracture in the 12th rib on his left side, the Marlins announced. He’ll go five to seven days without baseball activities, and then the Marlins will re-evaluate him. In the meantime, he’ll head to the IL.
APRIL 18: Marlins outfielder Starling Marte left today’s game in the middle of a ninth-inning plate appearance due to what appeared to be an injury to his side or oblique area. After the first two pitches of the at-bat, Marte grabbed at his side, and was taken out of the game after being observed by manager Don Mattingly and a team trainer.
Speaking to The Miami Herald’s Jordan McPherson and other reporters after the game, Mattingly said that Marte wanted to keep playing, but the skipper opted to be cautious.
“He’s a big part of what we do. He’s that cog in the offense, defense, on the bases….That’s the reason to pull him out of the game,” Mattingly said. “You don’t want to lose this guy for six weeks. It could be a couple weeks. It could be 10 days. It could be five days. We want it to be the minimum.”
While Marte will undergo further testing to determine the extent of the injury, Mattingly comments seem to indicate that the center fielder will miss at least some time, and likely make a trip to the 10-day injured list. If the injury is indeed oblique-related, it would be the third such injury of Marte’s career, though the first two IL stints (in 2012 and 2018) didn’t keep Marte out of action for too long.
Nonetheless, any setback is an unfortunate interruption to Marte’s superb start, as he had a .310/.414/.483 slash line and two home runs over his first 70 PA of the season. Magneuris Sierra is the most probable candidate to step into center field duty if Marte does have to miss an extended amount of time, and Miami could also call up Lewis Brinson or Monte Harrison from the alternate training site.
He was off to a decent start too. Injury bug is running rampant right now.
Hes been great so far. Hopefully he’s not out long.
Definitely a concern for the Marlins. We’ll have to play a little more Small Ball if he misses time.
The Marlins are good at that, they do the small things right which is something I respect about your team.
Yes, exactly. It’s what they do. That’s why I tell a lot of people that try to view the Marlins offense through stats and analytics, to watch them play because what they do on offense is not favored by analytics stats…but it is effective on execution.
They are bringing Brinson back up. So it seems they may be doing something along the lines of platooning/rotating Sierra, Brinson and occasionally Berti in and out of CF and the lineup. There will be a lot of running with that trio trying to hold up the fort in Marte’s absence.
Go Marlins!
Marlins organization run very well. Love the pitching staff. Only flaw is power; need one good power guy who hits better than Duvall.
We have Bryan Anderson, even though he’s started off the season cold. Jesus Aguilar also has power, but has changed his approach to where he goes with the pitch more than he used to.
Thoughts and prayers for a speedy recovery.
The speedier the better
Marlins are playing some good ball lately. Most of their losses have been close games too. Looks like their rebuild is finally starting to take shape. Should be a real playoff contender by 2023 if they keep improving.
They made the playoffs last year. Ooopsni forgot, it was short season. Doesn’t count.
Yes, they made the playoffs last season. Yes, it was a shortened season. Yes, it counts. Imo they overperformed last year, especially w the merry-go-round they had going w their roster makeup due to covid-19. I think they’ll be very competitive this year missing the playoffs or 2nd wildcard. I believe they’ll be pushing for the division or for either wildcard next season.
Maybe overperformed a little, but……starting pitching, starting pitching, starting pitching.
Maybe the Yankees should take notes.
Yes, they are certainly on the way. Offense needs to improve, but two straight seasons of competitive ball are a great sign.
Loved the guy in Pittsburgh. Speedy recovery
Loved the guy in Pittsburgh. Speedy recovery
Probably good news actually; that should heal relatively easily and not linger around like pulling something like an abdominal muscle would.
Time to bring up Bleday.
Bleday isn’t a CF.
Luckily I had a hunch that his injury was more serious than was being reported yesterday and decided to sit him this week in my fantasy league…hope he recovers well and gets back to raking, he’s been a bright spot so far
Ouch, wishing Marte a speedy recovery even though I feel like he’s a braves destroyer. He seems like a legitimately good player and teammate.
I’m no athlete, but I had a nondisplaced fracture of six ribs a couple of years ago and it took two months just to breathe without pain
It would be less than ideal if he missed 2 months
wow didn’t expect that, he looked like he had a bad oblique or something wonder when he fractured it
Weird injury considering how it happened…unless it happened previously but didn’t show itself until that swing.
Fractured a rib on a swing? That is quite astonishing.
I’ve known folks who’ve fractured a rib from sneezing. Ribs be fragile.
What’s astonishing is that a troll like you is posting…. This is for fred mcgoof
@Ghost of past pirates
Stick to being a pirate and a troll. It is quite apparent that you have a comprehension difficulty, and your medication for your profound delusions is obviously not working very well.
Happened to me too this week. At Chili’s.
Fractured my ribs, mashed my potatoes.
