APRIL 19: The Reds have outrighted Bedrosian to their alternate site, Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer tweets. He’ll remain in the organization.
APRIL 17: The Reds are activating right-hander Sonny Gray from the injured list to start this afternoon’s game against the Indians. In a corresponding move, reliever Cam Bedrosian has been designated for assignment (via C. Trent Rosecrans of the Athletic).
Gray has long been expected to make his return at some point this week. A back injury has kept the right-hander out of action in the early going. His return should be a boon to the Reds, since Gray pitched to a 3.70 ERA/3.83 SIERA over 11 starts last season. Given the lack of a minor-league setting to build back his arm strength, though, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Reds be particularly cautious with his workload over his first few starts.
The return of Gray bumps the 29-year-old Bedrosian from the roster. Formerly a productive reliever with the Angels, the righty has gotten off to a disastrous start in 2021. Over 5.2 innings across six games, Bedrosian has coughed up seven runs on ten hits (including a pair of homers) with six walks and seven strikeouts.

Thank goodness Bedrosian is gone!
chalk73
Thank goodnesses he is gone from the Angels as well.
bravesfan
Why? He’s been solid most of his career? Why would you want a solid to good bullpen arm gone? He’s clearly struggling with the red, but he’s likely bounce back.
prov356
bravesfan – Bedrosian had one decent debut season and has stunk ever since. If he takes the mound with runners on base, they will likely score. The Angels hung on to him way too long hoping he would repeat his one good season. They should have let him go long ago.
kellin
I said this back when he was signed by the Reds.. Glad he is no longer with the Angels, and Iglesias is still a better pitcher.
gbs42
By ERA+, Bedrosian has been average to well above average size 2016.
LordD99
I don’t see it. He’s been a good to plus reliever every year 2016-2020. He may not be what Angels fans hoped, but that’s quite different than if he’s been effective. He has been effective. The Jays will at minimum claim him.
prov356
My guess is you (lordd99) and gbs42 are only looking at numbers and have never actually watched him pitch. He is never a guy you want in with the game on the line. He will usually allow inhereted runners to score and inevitibly lose any lead he was given. He should have been gone years ago.
gbs42
And my guess, prov356, is selective memory is clouding your perspective.
prov356
I’ve watched him. He had one good season. Not here to argue or be insulting as you seem to be. Just stating what I’ve seen first hand.
gbs42
Not trying to be insulting, and my apologies that this seemed to be the case. We all have inherent biases and tend to remember certain events better than others.
I am looking only at numbers, because I haven’t watched him pitch, and I see ERA+ values of:
2016 – 362
2017 – 97
2018 – 1117
2019 – 147
2020 – 194
2021 – 42
Based on those numbers, I find it difficult to believe he wasn’t good between 2016 and 2020. It’s certainly possible he was great in low-leverage situations and awful in high-leverage ones, but it’s very unlikely he would have good overall numbers for the better part of five seasons if this was the case.
prov356
I think you summed it up when you said high leverage versus low leverage situations. When it’s a situation where he can’t do much damage, he can be fine. But if he inherets runners in a close game, he will more times than not allow those runners to score and usually lose the lead he was handed. Not always, but usually. Our bullpen is still our weakest link this year. Thankfully, the rotation seems to be improved.
Armaments216
The Reds have a couple other pitchers they could have just optioned to the minors but they chose to DFA Bedrosian instead. Guess he wore out his welcome pretty quickly. Wonder if he gets claimed.
gocincy
He will get picked up because he has flashes of good stuff, but there’s no consistency.
I’d like to see Perez and Romano get DFA’d, too.
bot
And David Bell
joeshmoe11
Reds are in 1st you clown
earmbrister
bot declared months ago he was done with the Reds, yet he continues to whine about them. Go complain about the NYYs or LADs.
BrandonGregory74
I like Romano. He’s just a 1-2 inning guy. Bedrosian couldn’t control his off speed stuff and his fastball isn’t overwhelming, unfortunately. I think he gets claimed too.
titanic struggle
I like Ramano too, big, strong and young with an upside..
Armaments216
No takers for Bedrosian. Reds apparently liked him enough to keep him in their system – though I guess they’d be paying him anyway.
kellin
He signed on a minor league deal for $100k, so it doesn’t hurt the team either way. That’s about the only good thing with Bedrosian’s contract.
diehardfantd
Romano gives up too many homers
Has never been consistent enough to stick around long. If he is still with club when Lorenzen gets back he will be dfa’d
titanic struggle
Perez? Didn’t know they had one, and Ramano is young and still has an upside. Please…
gocincy
I don’t see Sal Romano’s upside as much as you do, but that’s fine. I’m merely proposing that he got to the minors.
BrandonGregory74
Romano could go once through the line up ok but IMO he is a max effort pitcher. Never a starter and probably never a high leverage guy but could be a decent asset.
cbwalradth
Perez is 24 and throws 98 from the left side… one bad game as a reliever isn’t time to cut ties. Now David bell is horrible with the lineup and bullpen and should switch spots with Barry Larkin. Naquin was batting .400 with 6 homers in first 6 games and got benched for a week…
seth3120
If he doesn’t have a no trade clause they should move him for a healthy return. Throughout the season the Reds will fall off and they need a retool at least. Gray and his contract look pretty attractive
ksoze
That has to be a joke, right? Even if that became true, why would you kneecap your team while they are this hot. No team ever would, or should do that. Also if they did fall off by the trade deadline they could get as much for Gray at that time as they could now.
pappyvw
Seth, Reds aren’t going to fall off this season. There is something special going on with this club. I thought they would be bad this year, but I was wrong. This is a playoff team.
Dustyslambchops23
It’s April 19th
bravesfan
Thank you for putting Cam on the market. Hopefully my Braves will find a way to grab him. Too good to not be on a roster. I see he struggled with the reds in his short time there, but they honestly can’t afford not to have that quality of an arm in their bullpen ….
J.H.
Bummer for Bedrosian. He had some very good years with the Angels, but just could never put it together consistently and build year to year. He’s young enough to still put it together somehow, I hope he does!
BrandonGregory74
That lower leg issue he had a couple years ago must’ve been bad. He’s not overcome it.
