The Rays have selected right-hander Louis Head, placed righty Diego Castillo on the COVID-19 injured list and recalled RHP Chris Mazza, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times was among those to report.
This is a nice birthday present for Head, who turned 31 today. He was a 15th-round pick of the Indians back in 2012, but he hasn’t thrown a single major league pitch to this point. Head, who most recently pitched in the Dodgers’ system, has logged a solid 3.67 ERA in 410 minor league innings. However, he has struggled at the Triple-A level, where he owns a 5.46 ERA over 90 2/3 frames.
Before going on the IL, the 27-year-old Castillo was in the midst of yet another strong season. Through 9 2/3 innings, Castillo has posted a 2.79 ERA with six hits allowed and 13 strikeouts against three walks, and he leads the Rays with four saves in six chances. Jeffrey Springs and Trevor Richards are the only other Rays with saves this year.
Rays owner is happy he was able to get Head for such a cheap price.
@bobtillman- nothing like getting Head on his 31st birthday, nonetheless.
these Rays can litteraly grab a guy off the streets and get competent innings out of him. when are they calling up Stetson Allie?
@darkside. I’m not even a Rays fan but count me in as quite impressed with their pitching endeavors. Fun to watch a small payroll team beat up on the mega payroll teams. Rays are doing a bunch of things right.
I’m impressed with all their endeavors.
Joey Wendle is remarkable. Clutch hits. Plays excellent at 3B and SS – can also play 2B and the OF. Fun to watch.
Yeah but would like to see McClanahan here right? What else can he possibly do?? And they got the extra year banked already
they may be keeping him working as a starter.
Dang, Stetson Allie. Definitely not a name I thought I’d hear again anytime soon.
Headddd
The Rays always seem to be a step a-Head of the competition.
Hope head has good shoulders on him.
Rays got head
Lucky guy.
Anderson, Castillo, Fairbanks, McHugh, Poche, Roe, Drake, Beeks, and Reed all out from the bullpen. Add Archer and Chirinos from the rotation. I have never seen a pitching staff this decimated before.
Who’s the closer now?
Literally no one, we have no one. Luckily it’s just Covid IL so it’ll only be for a spot or two. Thompson and Kittredge will probably be committee closers if I had to guess.
Strickland
And yet they continue to win games. Well run organization, especially with their payroll limitations. They really need a new ballpark in downtown Tampa. They would actually draw fans if the park was nice and in an accessible location.
Getting Head some big league service
Sucks for Castillo and the Rays, but hey, at least we won’t have to face their closer this series.
I’m being a jerk, aren’t I?
GIVE EM HEAD!!!!! Wait. GIVE EM HELL!
Why does everyone lose their head over a guy’s game?!
I believe the dealings with Head began on 4/20.
