The Rays have placed lefty Ryan Sherriff on the restricted list. The club says that he is “going to take some time away from the game.” To respect his privacy, they will withhold anything more specific for now. Catcher Joseph Odom has been selected to take his place on the roster, per Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times (Twitter links).
The 30-year-old Sherriff was one of three southpaws in the Rays’ bullpen. Cody Reed and Jeffrey Springs remain. Big picture, Shane McClanahan and Josh Fleming are two more southpaws who will figure into the Rays’ pitching mix at some point this season. Brendan McKay could also make an impact when he returns from the injured list.
As for Sherriff, he was brilliant for the Rays in his 10 appearances last season. He did not allow a run over 9 2/3 innings while coaxing a 56.7 percent groundball rate. He was a late addition to the playoff festivities, joining the active roster for the World Series and tossing two more scoreless frames.
Odom, 29, is new to the Rays’ organization this season. He signed as a free agent this winter after making his Major League debut with the Mariners in 2020. He slashed .129/.209/.128 across 44 plate appearances. For as long as he’s on the roster, Odom will be a third catching option behind Mike Zunino and Francisco Mejia, which may allow manager Kevin Cash to give Mejia an opportunity to DH. Odom was a member of Tampa’s taxi squad.

what’s up with players randomly taking time off now?

We do not know what this young man is going through. Maybe a family member has died, maybe he has emotional issues, maybe he is on the verge of divorce… we just have to respect he has his reasons.

Mary Poppins philosophy only works for so long. “In every job that must be done, there is an element of fun: you find the fun, and SNAP, the job’s a game.”. At some time either due to repetition, superiors, co-workers, time demands, ownership/management, what we do to earn a living becomes tedious and tiresome. At that point the choice is to either: change companies, change occupation or just suck it up, get by, and be thankful you have got a job.
For many, the inability to disrupt life’s personal factors, result in the choice of the latter. This brings us to coping mechanisms like: drinking, drugs, smoking, gambling, extra marital affairs, anger depression, isolation and the end of relationships. Sometimes a break helps.

I hope he isn’t doing this b/c he got rocked last night for half an inning. Rough outing bubba but you gotta get back on the horse.
Unless he actually isn’t happy, then I’m all for it.
Go be happy in whatever that may be.

Jeeez, another one.
I understand money is not the end all, be all.
I also understand it’s much better to have it than not.
I love building. Always have.
But there have certainly been days in my life that I didn’t care for everything my job entails.
Dunno.
Put in a few years, get up with a good money guy & pursue your other dreams in style, uh?
It’s tough for me to understand on the surface. (Sure…cuz I’m old – if you need to) I think most actual baseball fans are probably going to struggle to understand this kind of decision.
Most of us played because we loved the game. Some of us had to be shown that clearly those days were gone. & MLB player is a pretty lucrative gig, man. I don’t understand his decision at all. & – know what ?- that’s ok, man.
Hammerin' Hank
Some people have psychological problems also that could lead to this decision. Maybe he has phobias, a fear of flying or a fear of playing in front of crowds or something else. Zack Greinke was on the brink of retirement before he got put on the medication that enabled him to keep playing. For you tough guys who’ve never experienced these types of issues, you’re not going to understand them and you never will.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Of course.
“Never judge another man until you’ve walked a mile in his moccasins”, uh?
I only said I didn’t understand it.
I made no judgments.
&…man, what’s wrong with striving to be tough? Ya know? That is a hallmark of Marines, standard fare in construction, & something we praise in certain ballplayers, fighters, & athletes we like. It’s alluded to in all kinds of other facets of life too, as an asset.
I don’t have to understand his actions.
He does.
& if – for whatever reason – you choose to not try to be tough well that is *your* deal. Right?
Nothing wrong if I want to make a different choice (& make no mistake, it is a choice.)
Happy Easter.

There’s burnout in just about every profession. Why pile on someone who, of his own volition, decides to walk away, hurting absolutely no one? We’ve all seen baseball players hang on too long, and more than a few we suspect of doing a Carl Pavano–drawing big checks while resting comfortably at home. This guy wanted to leave. Let him go in peace.

@Love, not sure where you get your data on what the next generation wants, but can’t imagine your take is better than @Cey. He works with that generation. @Ducky, do you think there is any chance your private school education acted son is less representative of the high school world than public school students? @Love, what do you consider the welfare budget, because the defense budget looks much larger to me than what I consider the welfare budget.
Bottom line, none of us know what is going on with these two other than what we can glean from the Buttrey statement. There is no indication that either expects society to support them. I, and many others, considered walking away from lucrative careers for a variety of reasons. That some did, and others didn’t, is not a sign of weakness for either side. In some cases, the bravest choice was to pursue something new. For some, it was to stick it out. There is no need to denigrate anyone who made the best choice they could.
Agree that we are each called upon to be the best we can based on our individual gift (individualism), but I also strongly believe that society is better when it provides aid to those who need it (collectivism). I do not believe the two approaches are mutually exclusive. I am happy to pay my share of of the tax burden to provide support for those in need.
