3:50 pm: Bradley’s IL placement is now official, with the team announcing it’s a left oblique strain. The Phillies recalled southpaw JoJo Romero in a corresponding move.
1:51 pm: The Phillies will be placing right-hander Archie Bradley on the 10-day injured list due to an oblique injury, The Athletic’s Matt Gelb reports (Twitter links). Bradley just pitched yesterday, allowing two hits and recording one out against the three batters he faced, and he was charged with the loss as Philadelphia dropped a 5-4 result to Atlanta.
IL visits are rare for Bradley, who hasn’t officially missed any time since the 2015 season. The severity of the oblique problem isn’t yet known, as more severe strains can lead to months-long absences. Even a 10-day stint for Bradley would represent a blow to the Phillies’ bullpen, which has posted some solid results this year following a thoroughly disastrous performance in 2020.
Bradley was one of several new faces added to the rebuilt bullpen over the offseason, as he signed a one-year, $6MM deal with Philadelphia after being non-tendered by the Reds earlier in the winter. The Reds’ decision was seemingly more based around saving money on Bradley’ arbitration salary (projected to fall between $4.3MM and $5.7MM) than on Bradley’s performance, as he posted a 2.95 ERA/3.44 SIERA over 18 1/3 combined innings with the Diamondbacks and Reds in 2020. Bradley has worked as a closer in the past, but seemed slated for set-up duty or general high-leverage usage thus far with the Phillies.

Another RP that I wanted for the Angels that has gone on the DL. Exactly how do you build a bullpen?
The Baseball Fan
Farm system. Turn bullpen arms into starters later on and minor league signs/claims off waivers
Luc (Soto 3rd best in the game)
*IL-are you still saying DL?
Halo11Fan
Old habits die hard.
Luc (Soto 3rd best in the game)
I get you, I used to always say DL lol.
caryloyd
The woke culture will eat you for lunch if you keep saying DL. That’s not PC
1984wasntamanual
Yes, yes I am.
Rsk3228
Farm depth so when guys go on the dl it isn’t as big of a deal.
BasedBall
The best way is to stack the rotation and AA/AAA pitching prospects.
Force 4/5th type starters work out of the bullpen.
STL cards have usually good

Bring up Jojo
VonPurpleHayes
oh no. not good.
DarkSide830
well it at least explains the recent lack of effectiveness (beyond the fact that Girardi was using him every other night…)
DarkSide830
well now Jojo is absolutely coming up

Go get em Jojo!

Pitchers with no injury history come to this team and wind up on the DL. Hope this isn’t a Robertson situation.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
I don’t think it’s a Robertson situation but I’m concerned that it’s oblique. I hope he’s not complete toast now for the rest of the year. If they play it right he could be alright but I’m not holding my breath.
Mrtwotone
Pat Neshek too!

Sooner or later the question needs to be asked is this a conditioning issue or a over-utilization issue with the Phillies. I’m leaning toward a conditioning issue. Girardi doesn’t seem to over-utilize his pitchers, so maybe someone needs to look at their strength and conditioning program.
DarkSide830
i dunno i haven’t been a fan of Girardi’s pen usage so far this year. Overworking Bradley and Kintzler because he’s affraid to use VV.
DonB34
The shame of that being…… they let Watson opt out to keep VV as a long man, they have used him once, and he walked 4 batters in one inning. Should have just bit the bullet, released VV, and kept Watson. The guy is a waste of a roster spot unless they are losing big and just want him to mop up by eating innings.
VonPurpleHayes
@DonB34 VV was used in 2 innings. The 1st inning he struck out the side. The next inning he walked 4 consecutively. It’s truly the tale of his career. He has unhittable stuff, but he cannot find the consistency needed to maintain success. It’s definitely mental.
Spanky McFarland
@DonB34 – While I agree with you that they should give up on VV, the Phillies tendered him a contract for 4 million (a huge mistake). Releasing him means the Phillies would be eating all of that 4 million minus the MLB minimum when he goes to another club..
Had they signed Watson, that would’ve been another 3 million added to a payroll that is already up against the tax. The smart thing to do would be to trade him and eat at least 1/2 of that 4 million. Problem is, no other teams have the faith in VV that the Phillies do, so outside of covering the MLB minimum, I don’t see a team taking VV on.
DonB34
Yeah, I was aware of the 3 K inning then the 4 walk inning, but if he’s a long man and he’s only good for 1 inning, that defeats his purpose. And that 3 K inning was more of a fluke than an expectation for what he’ll do moving forward.
DonB34
If I recall correctly, the thing that really stinks is that VV was tendered the contract before Dombrowski and Fuld were hired on, so it was not the current upper management regime that wanted him back. There were rumors of a trade a day or two after DD was hired. So at that point it was too late. I don’t think he was part of the plan at all when all those relievers were traded for and signed, but no one wants the guy so we got stuck with him.
Assuming reports are true, Watson would have only put them a million over the luxury tax had they kept him at $3 Million, and he ended up signing for only $1 Million with the Angels. So they may have likely been able to work out a big league deal for $2 Million, stayed under the limit until the trade deadline, and been a better bullpen. I understand it’s a lot of money, but a release made sense if he’s dead weight on the active roster, he can’t be traded, and a legit arm like Watson would be in the pen instead. I guess we’ll see if he gets used at all in the double header tomorrow..
Audrey
4 appearances in 10 days doesn’t seem like overworking to me. I think Girardi’s usage of the pen has been just fine. If anyone’s overworked it’s Alvarado. I do think they should only use one longman though, Hale and VV are meh.
Cult of Dickie Thon
Using two long-men in the bullpen because the Phils are going with a 5-man bench and only carrying 8 relievers.
Lack of off-days the rest of month is another reason why.
DarkSide830
5 man bench and all of em suck save the backup C.
Audrey
This probably won’t happen but I wouldn’t mind if they DFA’d Quinn and Torreyes and brought up Kingery and Herrera.
edit: actually Haseley has been worse than Quinn so maybe him instead.
DadsInDaniaBeach
Why would you want to DFA Roman when he is the best defensive CF on the active roster?
I would be okay bringing up Odubel, but not Scotty. Kingery can’t hit a lick.
Toreeyes is infield depth. Aside from his pinch hit last night, I’m not enamored with Joyce. (Sp)
DarkSide830
I think Torreyes is clearable, anf given he hasnt played much i think the only reason he’s still up is they want to give Kingery more time down.
Cult of Dickie Thon
Miller has been one of the best hitters off the bench since 2019 in MLB and Joyce is a solid hitter.
DonB34
I think Matt Joyce is decent. He had some big pinch hits when he was here with the Pirates. That’s really his biggest role as a left handed hitter to try to pop a homer or big hit late in a game.
Spanky McFarland
Matt Stairs made a pretty good living doing that. I can think of one night in LA that I remember quite vividly.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Jeurys Familia to the Phillies for a left field line ball girl to be named later.
phillyballers
How much money have the Phillies paid relievers to rehab the past few seasons? Pretty sure it’s more than the total salary of the Ray’s and As combined.
DonB34
Pirates payroll this year is $53,000,000. Robertson’s 2020 pay was $11,000,000, and 2019 was $10.000,000. That’s 39% right there.
