The Padres have placed right-hander Dan Altavilla on the 10-day injured list due to right elbow inflammation, the team announced. In corresponding moves, southpaw Nick Ramirez’s contract was selected to the big league roster, while left-hander Matt Strahm was shifted to the 60-day IL to create a 40-man roster spot for Ramirez.
It’s an unfortunate quick return to the sidelines for Altavilla, who was only just activated from a 10-day IL stint on Wednesday. A calf injury was the cause of Altavilla’s previous absence, and the righty appeared in two games for the Padres before hitting the IL once more. Altavilla allowed a solo homer to the Dodgers’ Luke Raley in Friday’s game and thus far has a 6.75 ERA over 1 1/3 innings pitched in 2021.
Acquired as part of the big seven-player deal with the Mariners last August, Altavilla has shown some flashes of quality but also a lot of inconsistency over 116 MLB innings since the start of the 2016 season. Altavilla has a 4.03 ERA and an above-average 26.1% strikeout rate over his career, but both walks (12.1BB%) and home runs have been issues for the righty.
Ramirez inked a minor league contract with San Diego in December, and is now set to appear in his third MLB season. The southpaw posted a 4.28 ERA over 90 1/3 innings with the Tigers, with 79 2/3 of those frames coming in his 2019 rookie season, but he pitched only 10 2/3 innings over five games in 2020.

So we lost the Nola trade right?
sdpadsfan11
@Remove
I think that was apparent when the Padres had to overpay in order to acquire him.
DrDan75
Nola is better than Hedges was. He’s only a bridge until Campusano is ready for prime time.
ukpadre
Well then why didn’t we just keep hedges (on a cheaper contract than Nola) and use him as the bridge instead? We lost the trade, and it was pretty apparent at the time, and blindingly obvious now.
Brew’88
@ uk. Nola is ranked 5th or 6th best C in MLB, and is back this week. Don’t know how you can equate him with Hedges who is nice defensively but is one of the worst hitting catchers in Padre history and a back-up catcher even on the depleted Indians. He’s 1 for 15 this season, batted 145 last season, and has a lifetime 196 average and 355 SLG %, and a career WAR of zero over 1250 ABs.
SDHotDawg
Nola can hit. He’s also a very competent first baseman. Campusano shouldn’t be in the big leagues. Not yet.
There is no comparison to Hedges at all.
Brew’88
TBD? Trammell was benched after his 6 for 42 start. He’s yet to show he can hit ML pitching. Torrens has an OPS of 550, yikes.. France is 4 years younger than Nola but would be at AAA in Padres system – why would the Padres prefer a mediocre 265 BA/440 SLG over Manny at 3B? Adams looks electric and seems healthy. Nola is back next week and they need him. .Regardless, it’s early, let the trade play out..
nutznboltz
Brewer, I was with you until the “Adams looks electric” comment. He is wild and never throws anything other than a slider. Much like Phil Maton.
Brew’88
@ nutz. After typing that I figured I’d get that well-deserved reply! I just meant to say his stuff is electric, but his command so far (2 bad outings out of 3) isn’t there. The main this is that he’s healthy. Hopefully he does well over course of season. His fastball is much better than Maton’s. friarsonbase.com/2021/02/03/padres-zips-hyped-reli…
Again, TBD.
nutznboltz
I agree on fastball, but he never used it. If he did, it would Make him that much more effective. I believe Darvish should use his fastball a lot more too.
nutznboltz
Uses not used.
Brew’88
yeah Adams control (along with injuries) has been his bugaboo. Sunday he did come in late in tie game and strike out the side against heart of Dodgers lineup. So Tingler has confidence in him. We’ll see.
SDHotDawg
Rothschild is in love with his pitchers throwing sliders, even if it’s their third best pitch. Ask Sonny Gray; Roth and the Yankees almost ruined him for that reason.
Longtimecoming
Remove just can’t accept that some trades are made for “right now” and not based on the next 10 years. Pads had, I repeat, had to improve the C spot for the playoff run and that is what they did – and got from Nola. They didn’t “lose” anything. They gave up what they had to give up – namely prospects that had no place in the future lineup – only 1 of which is performing (France) – to get what they needed. Not all trades are for 5 years down the road.
Deleted_User
Well the trade sure isn’t helping us “right now.” Let alone for the future…
The prospects could have been traded for something else.
reddy
I agree with you but Trammell has been serviceable so far. I would take him or a mannequin over Pham right now.
Brew’88
6 for 42 (143 BA) might be serviceable on the 1969 Padres, but this team has hopes to win
Brew’88
though 6 for 42 (Trammell) is better than 6 for 47 (Pham). Yes
Longtimecoming
Reddy – Trammell has been benched after another horrible start / showing he can’t (or isn’t ready) hit. I agree with the Pham comment but the 2 aren’t related. When Trammell was included he wasn’t the answer and isn’t still. The answer is not Pham or Trammell – it’s someone yet to be identified. In theory, it’s Grisham in LF with Abrams in CF; or Cro in LF. Neither Pham nor Trammell helps this team.

Preller was desperate after unloading prospects and catcher for long hair Clevinger. Mariners made him pay the price and he got burned nothing new. When does Preller pay the price after 7 years it’s still “prospects are good”
760to303
You could rephrase your quote to “prospects are STILL good”, even after all the trades. Do you really not think he’s improved the big league squad? Sure he’ll win some trades and lose some, but they are now a perennial contender and still have a solid farm.
SDHotDawg
“Perennial contender?” Do you have a crystal ball? We don’t know what they will be.
760to303
Nope, no crystal ball, but it’s pretty easy to see a roster with talent and depth locked up for multiple years, an owner who loves the city and is willing to spend, and still a top 10 farm system. You think they’ll be worse next year when Gore is ready and Clevinger comes back?
SDHotDawg
@760 … Of course not. But that’s not what perennial means. And I really wish people would stop trying to give the Cy Young to Gore before he’s even established himself in the high minors, let alone the big leagues.
760to303
Alright Mr. Wordsmith. In 2-3 years, tell me why they’re not still a contender.
I never said anything about Gore dominating or winning a Cy Young, but I think 4th or 5th starter potential in this rotation is realistic and would make the bullpen much stronger because of it.
Your name says SD so I get the pessimism, but it’s ok to get a little excited. This is a different organization top to bottom than we’ve ever had.
SDHotDawg
You have no idea how rookie SPs perform, do you? Well, neither do I. However, I do know how they perform on average. Even actual Cy Young winners take take about two years to hit their stride. Yet you and other of my fellow Padre fans don’t seem to understand that, and never have.
But I’d like to know of a championship team with multiple rookies on their staff who haven’t even spent a season in AA.
SDHotDawg
Not one of the pitchers we got from the Mariners is worth a poop. Not one. Preller fell in love with their high K-rates. Unfortunately, he ignored the high walk rates and homerun rates.
Longtimecoming
Remove – the trade was for 2020 playoff run. You are correct that it isn’t helping us in 2021 but you can’t call a trade in April. We have had this before – what “else” could have filled the C need in 2020 – which was the purpose – who would have been the “else”. Please, Mr GM tell us and make sure it is someone that not only fills the C need in 2020, but can avoid being hit in the hand in ST, and that you can guaranty would have stats well enough into the future that you could deem this trade a “win” for the Padres. Waiting for the name.

1. Doesn’t matter. They got curbstomped in the NLDS with Nola. They could have gotten curbstomped in the NLDS without Nola.
2. Saying that a traded prospect “had no place in the future lineup” doesn’t let Preller off the hook for a bad trade.
3. Leading questions don’t help your case.
4. Learn to thread your comments correctly.
Longtimecoming
remove – I missed it – who did you say they could have traded them for to improve the team? It isn’t leading – you said they could have traded them for someone else. I’m asking “who”. Just to prove how ridiculous you are, they could have traded for Trout and still lost unless he can pitch
Deleted_User
@Longtimecoming I don’t have to answer your ridiculous question. There are tons of players out there who are available for trade. It was never “Nola or nothing.” Or we could have just, ya know, kept them. Or do you have no faith in the Padres’ ability to convert their prospects into solid MLers?
Bozzmania1 2
Is this Padre team the most overrated squad in the past ten years? Not only are they not a legitimate contender with holes leaking everywhere in the lineup and on the mound,, it’s nowhere near one of the better Padre squads. To say they rank with the Finley Caminetti Gwynn Brown & Carter squad that was overwhelmed by one of the great Yankee teams is pure nonsense
760to303
They’re playing one of the best teams ever bro, and playing them tough. Long season and 17 more against LA so I’d relax on those proclamations. Funny you list Carter here too. You’re only about 7 years off bud!
dperez1
Way too early to pin the “overrated” or “underrated” label on any team or player at this point in the season. Come back in July with labels and that might still be a little early.

Here’s a doozy…
Tommy Pham has an attitude. Being the child of a 17-year old mother and criminal father has its effect.
If your daddy was this debris, I guess that be an excuse nonetheless…
Search “Anthuan Phu Pham” or “Anthuan Pham” (While “crab legs” is optional, it’s the least of his crimes.)
