April 21: The Padres announced that Lamet has officially been reinstated from the injured list. Lefty Nick Ramirez was optioned to their alternate site to open a spot on the roster.
April 19: Padres right-hander Dinelson Lamet is expected to start against the Brewers on either Tuesday or Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Dennis Lin (via Twitter). It will mark Lamet’s first outing since September 25, as he was sidelined by biceps tightness throughout San Diego’s postseason run.
Lamet received a PRP injection in October, and the Padres have been particularly cautious about not rushing him back into action until he is completely ready. Naturally any elbow issue is cause for concern with any pitcher, though Lamet is a recent Tommy John patient, having missed the entire 2018 season recovering from the surgery.
A simulated game in the 70-pitch range was the last checkpoint on Lamet’s path back to the mound, however, and now the righty is ready for his first official game of the 2021 season. Lamet will be thrown right into the thick of it against playoff-contender Milwaukee in his first outing, and if he starts on Tuesday, Lin notes that Lamet would then be lined up to face the Dodgers on Sunday in another huge game against San Diego’s chief rival.
A healthy and effective Lamet provides another boost to an already-strong Padres rotation. The righty finished fourth in NL Cy Young Award voting last season after posting a 2.09 ERA over 69 innings for the Friars, with a 34.8% strikeout rate that ranked fourth among all qualified starters in baseball and a fifth-ranked 27.3% strikeout-to-walk percentage.

Great and I just got rid of my tickets to Tuesday’s game!

Is it me because petco looks fully loaded on the last TV game I watched, quite a contrast to that of San Francisco where you have to be vaccinated or show proof of a negative test to be admitted into a game. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t slightly envious, just seems odd since they are both in the same state but SF always sides with caution. I can goto and A’s game without test or vaccine across the bay but they still have very limited attendance capacity.

yeah buddy our rotation just got that much better.

Right, now switch Paddack and Weathers!
letsgopadres
YES!!
mrpadre19
We need to piggyback Lamet and Weathers in my opinion.
Neither can go 6+ but combined we can get at least that.
BrendanBrewFan
Yeah no kidding. Couldn’t the Pads have waited a few more days just to be sure of his health???? lol. It was already going to be hard enough to watch this series. (from the perspective of a Brew Crew fan) lol. Well hopefully they take one and are in the other two games, just to make it worthwhile staying up late and losing sleep to watch.
Brew’88
the Brewer’s starting pitching looks damn good this year.
qbert1996
Playoff contender Milwaukee? We’re only 15 games in and they have a record of 8-7.
BrendanBrewFan
lol well yes a Playoff contender. Exactly because we are only 15 games in and the team has made it to three straight playoff appearances and is projected to be near the top of a rather anemic NL Central. I would agree with your post however in the sense that “Playoff Contender” seems a bit urgent a detail only 15 games into a season. (but the “only 8-7” part of your statement seemed you were being derisive solely with the argument that the team is indeed a team that will be in playoff contention) Had I been the author, and I’m certainly not, nor qualified to be one, lol, I wouldn’t have presented the Brew Crew at this time as some powerful force, Lamet is getting to face a lineup that is missing arguably it 3 best hitters.
qbert1996
That is exactly what I’m talking about. Its not like the Brewers are on a hot streak or anything. Theyre simply mediocre like the rest of the division and missing 3 key pieces as you said. I hardly would call that a playoff contender currently.
bigpapi136
They are on a hot streak now! They are still missing some key pieces yet still beating up on Padres.
KCJ
They’re 10-7 now buddy. Definitely a playoff contender in that division. To say anyone is not (except Pittsburgh) would just be foolish.
LordD99
I’m not sure which side you’re arguing here. If Milwaukee was considered a playoff contender entering the season, then they are still a playoff contender regardless of their current record. Baseball is a long season with many ups and downs.
StudWinfield
I know it’s early but assuming LA has the NL best record a healthy Snell, Darvish, Lamet and Musgrove will give SD as good a shot as anyone to win the WC game and take out LA in the NLCS. Good times for you Friar fans.
StudWinfield
That should be NLDS best of 5
Tatsumaki
You must not have watched the playoffs last year of the series that just took place. Dodgers were without bellinger too. If I was padres I’d be more concerned with giants
need_a_no-no_pads
Hahahaha the Giants! The playoffs don’t count with the pitching we had. Belonged is over rated, and we BARELY lost against the Dodgers. That was the most balanced series we’ve had in a LONG time.
AshamedMethGoat
Barely? You just lost 2 out of 3 to the Dodgers on your home field after getting swept by them in the playoffs last year.
You’re not as close as you think.
Ya'll a bunch of salty crybabies
Padres have zero chance of beating the Dodgers in a playoff series…..if they even make it there. The Dodgers exposed their weaknesses this past weekend and showed how overrated Tatis is.
Luc (Soto 3rd best in the game)
Don’t think they have a zero chance. It’s early to, I like the Pad pitching even though it’s a little rough so far besides Musgrove. Way to early to say 0 zero chance. To win a 5 game series you need 2 good starters . Like the Nats beat the dodgers
need_a_no-no_pads
Typical Dodgers fan, will never admit when they’re equally matched. Other than the 12 inning blowout against a exhausted bullpen, each game was equally matched. If you can’t admit that, you’re blind, ignorant, or both.
AshamedMethGoat
@Luc,
Agreed to say zero chance is an exaggeration, as the Padres are a really good team. And yes, you need two good (I’d say great) starters to have a chance to win a 5-game series, but the problem for the Padres and any other Dodgers opponent, for that matter, is the that LA has two elite starters, 2 great starters, and one really good one. Plus the guys that haven’t even cracked the rotation but would be #2’s on 3/4’s of the ballclubs in the league.
AshamedMethGoat
@need_a_no_no_pads,
Win a meaningful series against the Dodgers and then we can start talking about “equally matched”.
Brew’88
what I don’t get it why Dodger fans go out of their way to visit every article about other teams just to continuously pump up their team. Insecurity speaks loud
Ya'll a bunch of salty crybabies
Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t the Dodgers win 2 of 3 and outscore the Padres 15-11? Doesn’t sound equal to me……….
Ya'll a bunch of salty crybabies
No need to pump them up, their record speaks for itself.
Brew’88
here’s what you actually just said, “no need to pump them up so I’ll keep doing it”
need_a_no-no_pads
So mathematically, they put scored the Padres by 1.3 runs per game. Man, you’re right, the Padres are WAY overmatched. No starter got a win, yet the Dodgers starting pitching is ASTRONOMICALLY better than the Padres. Oh, and let’s not forget, Friday’s starter was a rookie bullpen guy…
BeforeMcCourt
Need, Lmk when your starters can go 6
The dodgers won exactly how they were expected to win. Their lineup is longer and pitching staff is deeper.
And before you start with injuries, remember LA had two rookies in the OF, Lux missed the whole series, and the pen was missing 2 guys for practically the whole series (Graterol returned sun). And the only thing that prevented a sweep was a Seager error and Phil Cuzzi sucking at his career
mlbdodgerfan2015
Bellinger is not overrated. His defense alone is a significant upgrade to anyone the Dodgers throw out there. Even better than Mookie’s defense. There are few that cover the amount of space that he does out there. The biggest advantage the Dodgers have when they play in big ballparks like Coors is having Bellinger at CF and Betts in RF. If they have someone like Taylor at LF it’s even better.
Yes, Bellinger has slumped at times at the plate but still comes up with timely hits. But defense is still the biggest reason why I’d like to have him back sooner than later.

Need, Lmk when your starters can go 6
Darvish went 6 Saturday. 3 out of 4 outings hes gone 6+.
2 out of 3 outings for musgrove has gone 6+
Snell, Paddack, Weathers, Lamet, Morejon whoever is starting giving them 5+ is enough especially with the pen.
You figure paddack and morejon piggy back the 5th spot and lamet and weathers piggy back the 4th spot to limit workloads for them. Long as you get 6+ out of them combined youre in good shape.
Gwynning
The Pads (via Tingler) have literally announced that they are easing starters into a fuller workload. Don’t know why we are dissecting starters IP within the first month, but so be it!
Brew’88
I think Darvish went 7 on Saturday.
BeforeMcCourt
The point I was making is simple. 40% of the staff occasionally going 6 doesn’t negate the entire staff averages 4 2/3 innings per start, as a whole. That’s all factored in…. and both of those guys also have starts less than 5 innings themselves
I was honestly being generous by saying 6 innings. The real number is less than 5.
It can be explained away by lessening workloads or whatever. But the innings gotta be sucked up by someone. The Padres have heavily taxed their pen and if they continue with that trend, it’s going to be a really long summer for that group. Who cares how well they’ve pitched in April if they’re gassed by October? Do you truly believe Snell is snapping his 25 start- sub 6 inning trend with more starts?
Y’all need a serious inning eater to pair with darvish. Call me a hater idc. It’s true
BeforeMcCourt
@beg to differ
-My bad in double post. I really miss the edit button. Will have to get used to checking post for all points
Anyways, just one last point. Morejon is out with an elbow strain, no? Not sure he’s in the picture at the moment, for the foreseeable future
I Beg To Differ
I listed Morejon just cause thats what youll see going forward as the year progresses if hes healthy.
But they have Humphreys, Crismatt, Norwood in the minors who could piggyback Paddack.
Let Paddack or Lamet go 3 innings, come in with Crismatt who throws a lot slower than Paddack/Lamet for 3 innings just to throw batters off, or vice versa let crismatt start then paddack/lamet throwing harder.
DrDan75
@Arthur
NOBODY has “zero chance” of winning a short playoff series. And Tatis is stilll only 22. The Dodgers would take him in a heartbeat if they could.
KCJ
To most Dodger fans:
It must be nice to outspend every other team by 50 to 200 million dollars. Does that really give you a sense of pride that they have a better roster with that kind of spending discrepancy? Glad you were born/live in LA and not Pittsburgh because apparently where you live or who your favorite team is determines your value as a human being
Tatsumaki
Dodgers spend 40 million more than padres this year last year is was less. Your salt is clear, sorry those hopes are fading as fast as padres arms
Deleted_User
No KCJ. The Dodgers don’t win because they outspend every team by $50m+. They win because they are the literal gold standard when it comes to scouting and developing young players. They’ve had at least one legit ROY contender each of the last 6 seasons and 7 of the last 8.
BeforeMcCourt
KCJ, does making such a ridiculous claim give you any type of pride?
If you think they win only because they spend money, you’re clearly not paying attention. Pretty much everyone but a few SD fans can acknowledge that
Brew’88
@ Tats I wouldn’t worry about the Giants, they’re my team but the good start this year is, unfortunately, just smoke and mirrors. They are building (sort of) for 2023-24 though
Smelly_Cobb
Dodger fans are delusional. That was a close series and all 3 games could have easily gone either way. Padres choked game 1, away, had man on second no outs twice.
mlbdodgerfan2015
@ Smelly_Cobb. Agree that it was a very close series but if the Padres choked game 1 away so did the Dodgers. They had the lead most of the game, and Padres were down to their last strike a couple of times. Hosmer’s ground ball was decently hit (not hard) and most of the times on a shift it’s an out. If found a hole. Knebel had one of those days where he lacked command of the fastball and curve. He got bailed out a couple of times at the Padres swinging at junk but he had his first bad performance. I thought that the game would flip when the Padres failed to score in the bottom of the 11th as Seager would be leading off and the Padres had the bottom of the order pegged for the bottom of the 12th. I think the Dodgers led most of the innings in the entire series and could have easily swept on Sunday if not for the Seager error.
Overall the series was fun and competitive but I think both sides did not display the best baseball quality. I’m hoping for a better played series at Dodger Stadium. The Dodger defense certainly can play better and will play better, I think.
Brew’88
Yep, real sloppy at times, both sides. The Tatis errors in game 1 gave the Dodgers 2 runs, the Seager error was equally killer. Still, I was impressed by both teams. Those were two incredibly frustrating losses by the Padres but they held together enough to grab game 3 – they could have unraveled. The Kershaw-Darvish matchup was unreal. Darvish tosses a 1 hitter, only to walk in Kershaw for the winning run? McKinstry and Cronenworth both look so seasoned already in how they work the count. (and against all-star quality SPs). Both teams were missing key elements and Tatis didnt have his timing yet. Other than Turner, no particular player on either side seemed to come into the series hot. Will be fun to see Musgrove and May, Lamet and Urias, in the next series.
Smelly_Cobb
agreed. It was a miracle if the padres won a game against the dodgers from 2012-2019. This feels more evenly matched for sure. Dodgers still better, but beatable.
mrpadre19
Either team could have won all three of those games. They couldn’t have been any closer. Also, last years playoffs the Padres didn’t have ANY of these four starters. The Dodgers faced Davies/Paddack/Bullpen.Not even remotely the same as 2021.Lastly,the Dodgers have played the Rockies twice already….the Padres haven’t been able to feast on them yet.Obviously LA is the team to beat….but don’t count your chickens just yet.
bucketbrew35
I truly hope he can stay healthy.
Dennis Boyd
He’s already out of the game after 2 innings- not good. No info given yet.
Hudson6
You do realize that he was never going to go 5-IP today right?
They are being incredibly careful with him and he has barely been built up to 70 pitches. I would expect his next several games to be at least partial bullpen games.
Dennis Boyd
He was supposed to go 70 pitches today, he went 29.
They just announced forearm tightness. “A kick in the gut” says Mark Grant. This sucks. Padres seem snakebit this year.
padreforlife
Make him closer
mrpadre19
Actually I think Paddack would be much more valuable in the 8th or 9th innings. He only has 2 pitches and if he can go all out for 1 inning would probably hit 98+.His change up is elite….imagine Hoffman(not close yet obviously) with that change up but paired with a near 100mph fastball.
I Beg To Differ
Paddack should develop a cutter in that case.
98+ fastball
92-93 cutter
Changeup
Hed be a great pen / 2 inning guy
Gwynning
His cutty has been getting LACED. He has all but ditched it now. I think he needs a splitty; go see if Yu’s grips can help your cause Paddack!
Gwynning
Agree on the ‘he’d be better as a Pen option’ though… hopefully he figures out his starting options because he has shown to be effective and is stretched out to the innings eating, too.
I Beg To Differ
Split would be a good back up if he cant figure out the cutter.
They shouls hire mariana rivera as a special pitching coach consultant to work with paddack and other guys on one.
Hudson6
Splitters and changeups are both low-spin pitches with similar speed and movement profiles. It would just be changeup 2.0. He needs something different, something that moves in the other direction.
Gwynning
Fair point, but he can’t seem to slide or cut it and “appears” to be giving up on the notion… what else would play up? His curve is average and I believe he should be flipping it more often, even if just for show.
Gwynning
I know every arm is different, but my splitter would dive into LHers and my cambio would dive into RHers.
Hudson6
Perhaps he can learn the Warthen slider? The high speed slider that depends on low rotation gyroscopic spin to create movement?
bbatardo
Anyone who says the Dodgers owned the Padres in the 3 game series didn’t watch it. Padres had several chances game 1 which was started by a rookie. If Betts misses that catch in fame 2 the game is tied. Of course Padres won game 3. Dodgers are better, but it’s closer than it seems.
Brew’88
The Dodgers won with ease. In fact, Betts just made that game-winning catch look dramatic, he could have just caught it standing still if he felt like it. And that would-be game-winning 103 mph shot by Myers in game 1 was deliberately planned by the Dodgers to strike the pitching rubber precisely just right so it would ricochet to the infielder for an out. Advance scouting.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Dodgers did not play very well in my opinion. Very sloppy on the field, 5 errors in 3 games. That won’t get it done most of the times. Seager with the costly error on Sunday on a routine groundball. Bad throw but was surprised that Rios did not come off the bag and tag the runner. That was the better play in my opinion. The hitting was not very good either the last two games. Did not get enough men on base and provide the timely hits. But of course credit the Padre pitchers. Starting pitching was very solid, but bullpen faltered at times. Treinen was shaky. Knebel had no command of his curveball or fastball. Jansen I think pitched better than his stat line but nevertheless blew the lead. Price was great.
Brew’88
Do you have a sense for how they plan to use Price this year? He seemed comfortable as a door-slammer
mlbdodgerfan2015
I think it’s TBD on Price’s usage. I think originally they planned to use Price as a multiple innings kind of guy but they couldn’t find enough opportunities for him. He did look good against the Padres in finishing games. I think it’s still going to be a closer by committee with Jansen leading the charge. He didn’t pitch as poorly as the stat line would indicate but could have used better command. I think the common theme that scares me a little bit with Treinen, Knebel and Jansen is the lack of command at times. I guess you can throw Joe Kelly in there when he’s back. When Jansen is on and can locate the cutter and get the slider closer to a strike he’s very good, but he has too many big misses and those are just wasted pitches. Treinen always scares me. He has good stuff but he lacks command and I’m not talking just walks, it’s also missing spots in the zone and compiling a lot of pitches. He doesn’t have big misses like Jansen but he rarely has clean innings.
BeforeMcCourt
The dodgers showed their starters can go deeper, their pen is more stacked and ready to handle a playoff-type workload, and their offense will remain steady even if 1/3 of the normal starters didn’t start a single game
The dodgers went into town and took care of business exactly as they were expected to do. Their depth won. Not sure how that’s a win for the Padres really in any way. You don’t magically gain depth. They traded it all away, remember?
Brew’88
I actually don’t disagree with your point about LA’s SPs. Snell’s ERA might be fine but his value drops significantly by taxing the bullpen. Musgrove, Darvish (who 1-hit the Dodgers in 7 IP) and Lamet are guys who usual;ly go 6+., though they probably won’t let Lamet do that for a while.
In this day and age, a SP has to have a no-no going if managers are going to let them toss a complete game. I think that’s a mistake.
BeforeMcCourt
As a staff LA is averaging 6 2/3 per start, and have Gonsolin and Price staying on semi-starter schedules ready to go
I know y’all are getting Lamet back but I can’t imagine he’s free range, 100 pitches right out the gate. I struggle to see what starters are really “expected” to pick up more innings than they are already throwing for SD.
Brew’88
Musgrove went 7 tonight, 13 K. The Pads need to worry more about their lack of hitting, frankly.
BeforeMcCourt
Another Padre who’s magically healed just before he’ll face the dodgers. Hilarious
BeforeMcCourt
Did you guys know Snell hasn’t pitched the 6th inning in 25 straight starts, going back to last year+ the playoffs? And the Padres staff as a whole is averaging under 5 innings per start?
That’s why they’re not equals to the dodgers folks. That is exactly what played out this weekend
mlbdodgerfan2015
Anyone know the success rate of PRP injections on UCL and bicep injuries? I’m curious. It seemed to have worked for Tanaka, although many claim that he was pitching hurt due to the substandard performance. But didn’t seem like it worked for Ohtani as he eventually needed TJ surgery. Lamet has a nasty slider that seems unhittable at times but you wonder how much strain that does to the elbow.
Brew’88
I was just reading up on it when I saw your post. Here’s a good explanation. It sounds too cutting-edge to have much data on success rate.
floridaortho.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/11/UCL_PR…
mrpadre19
I am pretty sure Lamet will end up with TJ.
Because Padres.
BeforeMcCourt
I think Tanaka is the one of a few pitchers who fully avoided TJS in recent years and pitched well for multiple years following. However, his velocity was significantly reduced and his splitter is not the pitch it was in Japan, movement wise. Splitters are one of those pitches that tear the elbow up
His numbers overall declined too. So even Tanaka could be a case of “was it really a success” just because he didn’t eventually need surgery, if his product was diminished?
Tatsumaki
Garrett richards did this aswell with angels and it did not work and pitched 2/3 games before going under for Tommy John.
Gwynning
Let’s go, Big D! Time to shine!
Poppin' Balls
I ultimately think Lamet ends in the bullpen as a lights out late inning guy, due to his injury concerns coupled with his essentially two pitch arsenal. Thoughts?
mrpadre19
Depends on Gore and Clevinger next year….and Paddack really.
7 guys/5 spots
But if he’s healthy he will start and if he’s not he will have surgery….
empirejim
2 innings and he gets lifted with right forearm tenderness……. Should have had TJ last Oct. and missed this season, now 22 is probably a loss as well
Dennis Boyd
It’s going to be at some point, someone is going to figure out the best and earliest year to blow out your elbow and go get TJ. Why wait until you are on a major league roster. Do it before the draft, even.
