The Padres announced that they have reinstated center fielder Trent Grisham from the 10-day injured list. The team optioned outfielder Brian O’Grady to its alternate site in a corresponding move.
The Padres have so far gone without Grisham, who suffered a hamstring strain almost a full month ago (on March 11). They have primarily turned to Tommy Pham in center during Grisham’s absence, though the former hasn’t performed well in the early going.
San Diego acquired Grisham in a trade with Milwaukee before last season, and he ended up as one of the main reasons the Padres clinched their first playoff berth since 2006. Grisham played in 59 of the Padres’ 60 games, batted .251/.352/.456 (121 wRC+) with 10 home runs, 10 stolen bases and 2.3 fWAR in 252 plate appearances, and won a Gold Glove Award. The 24-year-old’s return should be all the more welcome for a position player group without shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. and catcher Austin Nola, who are on the IL.
thebaseballfanatic
Good to see. He’s electric when healthy.
bbatardo
Hopefully he can provide a much needed spark to the offense.
fs54
Just like the spark he provided to the Nats in 2019
The Baseball Fan
A tiny bit overrated but still, I like him and he’s got potential. See you in the 2022 World Series, Padres!
BillTheThrill10
As a Padres fan, nothing would make me happier. Now that being said, I don’t see us cracking the playoffs this year without a fully healthy Tatis jr. It’s clear him and the Padres are going to rush him back and have him play injured instead of making sure he’s fully healthy. Hate to say it but without Tatis fully healthy, we’re a fringe playoff team. Hope I’m wrong but just the way it seems.
baseballanalytics
No… They are still absolutely a wildcard team without Tatis. Also, they are not going to rush him back during the first year of his mega deal. They are not taking that risk with his longterm health, I would trust their doctors over you anyday.
24TheKid
Yeah, I would worry too much about the Padres missing the playoffs. They’ll be okay.
Baseball 1600
Padres pitching is good but that offense… looked pretty terrible. Understandable why they struggled vs Gausman but DeSclafani and Aaron Sanchez are not Cy young pitchers and the Giants bullpen was horrendous yet held them at bay.
BillTheThrill10
@Baseball1600 I agree, the pitching has done well, but our offense has looked sluggish. Unless they wake up, our playoff hopes don’t look as bright as they did when the season started.
baseballanalytics
Geez.. I am allowed to disagree with you, or is that too much for you to handle? I thought your comment was pointless and not grounded on enough games to conclude that we are fringe playoff caliber. Also, I never said you want him to be rushed back! Also you are clearly not a doctor lmao! You do not have access to the Padres medical records, so you don’t get to assume they are rushing him back, your medical opinion that he should be shut down holds no ground when their medical staff believes otherwise. You did not personally view the mri results nor do you have the background to assess them or the injury as a whole. Why don’t you just sit back and let the professionals give their opinion before you try to disagree with their conclusions? Settle down now kid.
baseballanalytics
Maybe next time, you shouldn’t get so pissy just because someone disagrees with you. Food for though 😉
socal-ewalk
Bill calm down man, were all friar faithful here ugh
baseballanalytics
My god you are boring me, get a life man hahah You seriously need some hobbies or something.. I was there when Fernando went down and it hurt, I just hate seeing dumb comments like yours trying to overanalyze and predict and observe when all you can do is sit back and hope for the best with his health under the guidance of medical professionals. Calm down dude seriously, did you not get enough attention as a child? You need to argue with anyone and everyone??
And no, you will never know more than me about baseball, I have a phd in statistics and have worked in multiple front offices. What I don’t have, is patience for children like you who cry when someone comes through with a different point of view.
socal-ewalk
Calm down bill, put that energy into wishing Fernando a fast recovery

@BillTheThrill10
MLB teams play very nearly every day from late February to October. All teams have to deal with injuries. The best teams have the depth and bench strength to deal with it. The Dodgers will still win without Cody Bellinger for a while, and the Padres will be ok without Tatis.
24TheKid
Who’s overrating him? Like you said, he has potential as he showed the tools of a star but he hasn’t done it for more than 60 games yet and during that time he still showed that he needs improvements to reach his potential. But even without the improvements, he’s shown that he can at least be an above average outfielder on a playoff team.
DrDan75
Grisham’s what.. 24 or something? He needs to curb his strikeouts a little, but he’ll be ok.

You know us Brewers fans will be watching…

A little off-topic, but that Austin Nola trade sure went south so quickly for SD: France, Trammell and Torrens are all in Seattle starting lineup, with Munoz still a potential closer. All 3 of the Padres guys are on the DL and looking like they have way lower floors. Just proves Preller isn’t perfect, and every GM has their blunders….
DarkSide830
its been a few weeks…
A'sfaninUK
I agree but we all know Trammell from prospect status, and France has been a great hitter from day one, so odds are they will pan out as solid regulars at least, all SD got was a catcher and a couple relievers. I also just don’t rate Austin Nola, a 31 year old catcher, as being a huge trade target worth that much, especially if you have Campusano in waiting. I can’t see SD looking back on this move fondly.
Dennis Boyd
Capusano isn’t ready this year, so if Nola does as well as he did for Seattle last year for the Pads this year, the trade will be worth it. Trammel needs some serious help to make it and Torrens is a good backup catcher. The big wildcard, I think, is adams. If he can stay healthy (I know a big if), he has closer potential. So far, Seattle is ‘winning’ this trade, though
BasedBall
In 29 games for SEA, Nola had an OPS+ over 150.
I wouldn’t hold my breath for a repeat.
DarkSide830
Nola provides value with his versitility. he arguably is more versitile then France. Trammell’s stock has taken a hit since his peak with CIN, Torrens is good but hardly perfect and less of a certainty then Nola, and Muñoz is a big question mark given that he’s already had to undergo major elbow surgery. so far SEA’s probably gotten more value, but the first three may have been in danger of being squeezed on the roster with how much the team reimagined itself in the offseason.
Hudson6
In 2020 Austin Hedges had a 64 OPS+. Francisco Mejia had a -10 OPS+. Luis Torrens did have a 96 OPS+, but in only 14-AB. Nola had a 96 OPS+ for the Padres. +33 in OPS+ is a pretty big deal.
24TheKid
I don’t think it’s terrible for SD, but definitely a big win for Seattle. Nola will still be valuable and Adams isn’t completely lost yet. Not sure what they were thinking with Altivilla though. They gave up too much but the trade served its purpose. It’s a typical win-now type of deal.
A'sfaninUK
Ah yes, I wasn’t thinking about the “win-now” aspect of it. Definitely good for Seattle, and “it is what it is” for SD.
Longtimecoming
One thing about trades is that you shouldn’t judge them early (see James Shields ending up being Tatis for example). So, if Caratini and Nola hit – someone at deadline (like Pads last year) needing to upgrade at catcher, comes calling for Nola. Do pads get back what they gave up – not likely but who knows. Just saying, that trade ain’t over yet and while I loved France, Trammell couldn’t hit for us so he was expendable at the time with Grisham now and Abrams later regardless of what he may turn out to be.
mrpadre19
Just because those guys are in Seattle’s lineup doesn’t make it a bad trade.
First of all Trammell is hitting under .200,I don’t see him lasting in the Majors long this year.
Second, where was France gonna play in “the Padres” lineup?
I like France, but he would be on the bench or in AAA in SD.
Lastly Nola is better and much more versatile than Torrens.
So how is it a bad deal?
None of those players would be on SD’s roster if the deal wasn’t done.
Deleted_User
@Longtimecoming no. The Padres aren’t getting a better return than they gave up to get Nola if they trade him at the deadline. Stop it with that nonsense.
Longtimecoming
I think maybe you failed to read my post – the part where I said “not likely”. As stated by others correctly, Nola was needed for “win now” upgrade; players traded were expendable due to being blocked. What is real is that there are playoff contenders that will need an upgrade at catcher at deadline and if Pads have Nola available (this assumes as originally stated – that he is hitting) then, yeah and other “win now” trade could return something good. So, I’m not saying they get better back and they don’t need to. They got their “win now” value for 2020. If they gets some wins in 2021 AND get something back – win, win, win.
Deleted_User
@Longtimecoming no, that is what you call bad asset management. And the fact that the traded players were blocked doesn’t mean they had no value. They could have been traded for something else. It was never traded them for Nola or lose them.
Longtimecoming
You do know that Nola was generally rated as the “best available” catching option right? And yes, if you know about the Padres 40 man issues last year, they were going to lose people.
bbatardo
I agree the Nola trade doesn’t look good for the Padres right now, but out of everyone… France is the 1 player I wish the Padres kept. The problem was there is nowhere for him to play really.
DrDan75
@UK
Ty France is a natural third baseman. He is a good player, but was being blocked by Machado and didn’t really have a position. Trammell wasn’t going to break into that outfield, and Torrens just wasn’t in the team’s plans. I would have preferred that they held onto Munoz, but… oh well.
The Padres really, really needed a better first-string option behind the plate than Austin Hedges going into the 2020 playoffs. Nola is a bridge until Campusano is ready to roll, but Victor Caratini is looking pretty good right now too.
DrDan75
Oh, and congrats to Joe Musgrove )
Longtimecoming
After the game is was said that Caratini has now caught the last 2 no hitters in MLB. He may be the find in the trade.
ItsStillMillerPark
One of the trades ill never get over as a Brewers fan. Tons of positive moves by Stearns in his tenure, and this was not one of them
A'sfaninUK
I dunno, like I was reminded earlier in this thread, its still very early. Less years of control of Davies, Lauer is until 2025, plus Urias can still come around, too soon to call. There’s also a lot of red flags on Grisham too, including small sample ones. Beware all 2020 stats: all teams barely played outside their division.
Longtimecoming
A’s Fan – A’s are my AL team so let’s get that out there. For consideration, how about not detracting from actual performance whether 2020 or any other detractor people like to use, and give it its due. Gold glove and great offense. Now, let’s also not let a small sample size mean he does it for 10 years either. Not everyone is The Machine Pujols or Mike Trout but hey, I’ll take 85% of his 2020 stats for 4-5 years and be happy!
Brew’88
85% of HRs/SBs sounds fine but 85% of BA would be BJ (Mendoza Line) Upton (the later years). I know BA isn’t in vogue anymore, but he needs to keep it above 250 and continue his promising OBP. If he does that skies the limit.
ItsStillMillerPark
Arcia was traded to let Urias know short is his. I sure hope he can hit enough to stay in the big leagues. Lauer is an absolute train wreck so far, hopefully his career turns around
Longtimecoming
I watched these 2 come up in Padres system and wouldn’t give up yet. Manage expectations maybe. Lauer with some coaching should be a solid and steady 5, maybe 4. Urias is just a guy that hit like crazy at every level until now. Maybe never but it isn’t like he doesn’t know how. Maybe confidence issues? I wish them the best and hope my Lauer autographed ball becomes valuable someday!
DrDan75
Lauer was always good against the Dodgers when he was with the Padres. Everyone else more or less shellacked the guy.
Dennis Boyd
Layer is garbage and Urias was always way overrated by SD. This is a big win for SD now and very likely to be for the life of the trade (IMO)
VegasSDfan
Welcome back! Finally
Hudson6
Anybody notice that the Padres threw their first no-hitter? And by the local boy Joe Musgrove in his second start for them! Nice!
Longtimecoming
Watched it on mlb.tv – it was a very well thrown game. No, I repeat no, fastballs thrown in last 2 innings! I hope Chris Paddack was paying attention and working on a third pitch!
Brew’88
Unbelievable, the curse is finally broken and by a hometown kid!
Hudson6
Or he could get back the active spin he had on his fastball in 2019 when opponents hit .204 with a .391 slugging percentage against it.
Brew’88
The tall Texan better get his act together soon, starting today in Texas, or Lamet will be replacing him, not Morejon, in the rotation.
Longtimecoming
I’ve been thinking for weeks that he has 3 starts to improve or he is odd man out and sent to AAA when that opens up to work on things. Lamet, Morejon, and Weathers, then Gore – he can quickly be behind 4 guys, then if he doesn’t regain form, add Clev to the mix and now he is 5 guys away from getting back up. Literally, he can either be 4 or 9 on the list real soon.
Brew’88
Yeah, what you describe is sort of like the Lucchesi story, albeit higher profile this time. And if both Lamet and Clev come back in 22, even Gore sees a No Vacancy. That rotation would be drop dead dominant Nice problem for Pads.
Dennis Boyd
Imagine a rotation next year where the presumed number 5 starter just threw a no-no. Snell, Lamet, Darvish, clevenger and Musgrove.
Dennis Boyd
That’s five legitimate aces, any of which could be the #1 on many teams
Longtimecoming
Not only imagining it – gleefully waiting for it to happen. Take it one step further, with Morejon, Weathers, Gore and even Paddack remaining, who can we trade from that list (thinking someone that will be a free agent like Clev or Snell or Musgrove) at deadline for that power hat LF that we won’t have (unless Ona pops)!!! Basically, trade 1 and extend 1 of those 3 and let the other walk for a draft pick possibility.
