As if Joe Musgrove’s no-hitter wasn’t enough good news for the Padres, Fernando Tatis Jr. was taking grounders prior to yesterday’s game and is now also taking part in hitting and running drills. Tatis is on the 10-day IL recovering from a slight tear in his left labrum, though the ugly-looking injury may only keep Tatis out of action for a relatively short amount of time. Tatis’ shoulder inflammation has decreased to the point that he has been able to do some fielding work, and he could keep gradually ramping up his baseball activity as long as his shoulder remains sound, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote yesterday.
Manager Jayce Tingler sounded cautiously optimistic talking to Acee and other reporters today. “We want to take it day by day, but we feel confident if we can continue down this road, we’re going to be in a good position for him to be activated” by April 16, Tingler said. That would be the first day Tatis would be eligible to leave the injured list, and it would put Tatis on pace to be in the lineup as the Padres began a big series with the Dodgers.
More from around the National League…
- Mets GM Zack Scott provided reporters (including the New York Daily News’ Deesha Thosar) with updates on Noah Syndergaard and Seth Lugo, saying that both right-handers are on schedule with their injury rehab. Lugo underwent bone spur surgery on his throwing elbow in February, and is expected to be back at some point in May. Syndergaard is set to throw a live batting practice today, in the latest step in his recovery from Tommy John surgery in March 2020. If all continues to go well for Syndergaard, he is on pace to rejoin the Mets’ rotation before the end of June.
- Between a torn ACL in 2019 and then a tough time recovering from that injury (on top of all the other unusual elements last season) in 2020, Andrew McCutchen has some unfinished business as he enters the last guaranteed season of his three-year, $50MM contract with the Phillies. “I had a lot of catching up to do last season,” McCutchen told The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, noting that it wasn’t until the Phillies’ last few games in September that he really felt comfortable. Now, however, McCutchen is entering the year with the benefit of a full Spring Training, and there are “no limitations for myself. No hindrance. No thinking, second-guessing. Really pushing myself to where I didn’t I feel like I had to guard….So, going into this spring, I was just saying, ’I feel like myself. I can squat and play and do what I need to do here in the games.’ ” It’s a good sign for McCutchen as he enters his age-34 season as the Phils’ regular left fielder, and he also pointed out that there aren’t many everyday outfielders of his age remaining in a sport that has become increasingly less inclined to regularly play veteran players.
I Beg To Differ
What a game by Joe Musgrove. Couldnt have scripted it any better
Home town kid with sd tattooed throws first ever no hitter in franchise history. Almost threw a perfect game.
Nothing
It’s hard not to be sentimental about baseball. Beautiful moment.
I Beg To Differ
No shame. I cried a little. Tears of joy. Tears of joy. Its surprising to see something youd never thought you see in your life time.
BeforeMcCourt
It is a cool story. Certainly a moment to enjoy+ remember as a fan

Where is the article on Musgrove’s no-hitter?
DarkSide830
they don’t do that here
DrDan75
MLBTR doesn’t cover individual games or teams the way a homer mlb.com website would. Just baseball news in general.
Hudson6
I guess the Tatis news is good, as long as he is still able to hit and make it through the year. His choice though.

Man…I hope they don’t rush Tatis back. I’m no dr but I tore my labrum, and it took about three weeks to reattach to rim of the bone then about another 3 weeks of rehab to feel better.

Can Syndergaard play right field?

Finally – someone else gets it.

Hello Mark,
Can you fix the sentence? You put the word ‘yesterday’ twice after the word ‘San Diego Union-Tribune wrote’. Please & thank you.
“Tatis’ shoulder inflammation has decreased to the point that he has been able to do some fielding work, and he could keep gradually ramping up his baseball activity as long as his shoulder remains sound, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote ‘yesterday yesterday'”.

Thank you Mark!

Yea yeah I know what they are saying. But it sure looking like they are prioritizing an april series against the dodgers to rush back a 22 year old phenom, from an injury they’re just lucky wasn’t worse. Interesting management
I’d be furious if I was a Padre fan
Hudson6
I don’t like it but it’s his choice. The Padres can’t force him to have surgery now.
BeforeMcCourt
Force surgery? Never said that
But they could give him more time to actually heal. I hope he’s pain free without some heavy prescription pain meds needed. As a person as much as baseball.
This is my opinion, but I just can’t imagine he’s gonna be pain free by august 16. I’ve seen too many dodger hitters injure their shoulders and take a long time to return to their pre-injured self to believe he’s 100% in 10 days. I’d have the same opinion if it’s Tatis or Will Smith or Mookie or whoever, to be clear
Hudson6
What I am saying is that the Padres do not make medical decisions for Tatis. He is an adult. If he tells his doctor or the Padres that he is in pain they cannot force him to play. If he is like many hyper competitive young men he may try to play through the pain. That is not the Padres choice, it’s his.
BeforeMcCourt
Again. I’m not an idiot. I understand what you’re saying
But the Padres CAN stop him from playing if they want. That’s what being an employee is. So long as there’s an injury+legitimate reason, the Padres COULD keep him on the IL as long as THEY want. That is not Tatis’ choice
He can whine to the media “I feel healthy”, but Tatis does not decide when Tatis leaves the IL. He’s still just a ball player
I can also have my opinion with what you just said being fact. The Padres should know it’s near impossible he’s truly pain free, and should be the adults with their 340M asset and sit him. That’s MY OPINION. I don’t care what lie Tatis is telling them. He’s a 22 year old 340M asset that they own for the next 14 years. That’s how they should be viewing him. He’s an asset worth a ton of money. MY OPINION is they should be overly cautious with him.M. This IS the Padres choice, as long as there’s a medical backing. Ie, PAIN
Just because Tatis is an adult doesn’t mean he’s a responsible adult when it comes to his health &long term risks. It doesn’t mean he is making the best choice for the Padres. MY OPINION is the Padres should keep him on the IL longer than the minimum. I can have my opinion and it still be Tatis’ decision if he has surgery. They can coexist
Hudson6
I think the MLBPA would vehemently disagree with your statement “the Padres COULD keep him on the IL as long as THEY want.”
quxdraw
All Padre fans need to watch this vid. Not real encouraging for this season.

The Padres should give Tatis extra time to recover from an injury that he has re aggravated multiple times. The Padres need him for the long term, and it’s still early in the season.

I agree but we gotta beat up on the doyers next weekend
BeforeMcCourt
Yeah that giants series sure gives hope!

Glad to see Musgrove finally made it back to Major League Baseball after a few years away.
BeforeMcCourt
While it may seem like this is a lie, Pittsburg is a major league team
He’s been pitching professionally since 2011…

@BeforeMcCourt please excuse FWJBT for his remarks. He’s is a long lost Pirates troll and has some long lost love/hate with them. He’s been bitter since Pirates lost to the Reds several years ago in that WC game. Then the bitterness grew further upon trade of Cole and FWJBT felt Pirates should have spent for some washed up old timer to get them to the World Series.
He’s just a bitter fan that I think jumped ship and a Phillies or Nationals fan now. Either way, he’s going to show up on another Pirates post or former player of a Bucco. Next up is Tallion….
66TheNumberOfTheBest
At first I thought this was an amusing attempt at a fan fiction biography, but now I’m wondering if it’s just confusion…
Lost to the Reds in that WC game?
Only thing the Pirates HAVE won in the past 30 years, my man.
BillTheThrill10
As much as I want to see Tatis back, I would rather him actually be back at full health than rushing him back and chance him hurting it more. I’m sure he wants to be back and wants to hold of surgery until the off-season, but at the very least keep him on the shelf for another few weeks to make sure it sets back properly. No need to rush him for a Dodgers series especially this early in the year.
Longtimecoming
Regardless of opinions on the issue (mine include), it is a fact that professional athletes in all sports play with injury and pain at some point in their careers. They also get the highest levels of medical advice – whether they take it or not. Competitiveness, money, fame, pride, whatever may be the motivation of any particular individual, it is reality. So long as he believes he can’t reinjure / do damage that can’t be corrected ultimately (hopefully off-season) then he is playing if he can tolerate the pain. Just get ready for it and don’t blame the Padres or Tingler. It will ultimately be Tatis that decides because as stated, the MLBPA in this collectively bargained sport would have a field day if Padres bench him when he stated he can play. Big boys making a lot of money make big boy decisions – sit or play, succeed or fail, try and see.
