The Padres could welcome back Dinelson Lamet from the injured list to start Sunday’s game against the Giants, writes AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. The righty got through a bullpen session this afternoon and the team will monitor how he responds over the next few days, manager Jayce Tingler told reporters. There was plenty of concern when Lamet, a 2018 Tommy John patient, left his first start of the year with forearm tightness after having his season debut delayed by a biceps issue. However, it seems he’s avoided any serious problems and could return after spending the minimum ten days on the IL during this most recent stint.
More from San Diego and the rest of the National League:
- Padres starter Ryan Weathers left his outing this evening against the Diamondbacks after one inning with left arm soreness, per a team announcement. The young southpaw topped out at 92.8 MPH with his fastball, down rather significantly from its typical mid-90’s range, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune was among those to note (Twitter link). That prompted a mid-inning visit from the team trainer, although Weathers did finish the frame and didn’t appear to be in obvious pain while he was on the mound. It isn’t yet clear if Weathers is in jeopardy of missing any future starts.
- Brewers starter Zack Godley is headed to the injured list with a bruised finger, per Todd Rosiak and Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. The right-hander left this afternoon’s game against the Marlins in the fourth inning after sustaining the injury on a bunt attempt the frame before. Today’s outing marked Godley’s first appearance of the season, as the 31-year-old was only selected to the 40-man roster earlier in the day. With Godley out, Eric Lauer will start tomorrow against the Dodgers and could be in line to join Brandon Woodruff, Corbin Burnes, Freddy Peralta and Adrian Houser in the rotation.
- Cubs catcher Austin Romine went on the injured list early this week, and it seems he’s in for an extended absence. Manager David Ross called Romine’s left wrist sprain “significant” and said the backstop would be out for a while (via Russell Dorsey of the Chicago Sun-Times). Tony Wolters was selected to the roster to back up Willson Contreras with Romine on the shelf.
I Beg To Differ
Man Padres cannot catch a break with these pitching injuries. Maybe preller sacrificed some arms for a revitalized tatis Jr.

Actually the hashtag is better as #bringbackbalsley or #bringbackbals

The Padres seem to be playing a game of chicken with Lamet’s health. I wonder what Ted Giannoulas thinks?

Hope everything is ok with Weathers
Nothing
Really hope Lamet can finally stay healthy. The potential is there to be a true ace.

Over/under 3 innings until Lamet hurts himself again?

I feel like I’ve seen this movie before?
ctyank7
Two short starts will be his finale to ‘21.
kripes-brewers
Yikes. Lauer is about to get crushed. Not cool. Hopefully Yeli makes it back!
bbatardo
For what it’s worth, Lauer owned the Dodgers when he was on the Padres. Maybe it’ll carry over.
Orel Saxhiser
Yes. The Padres probably sent the Brewers plenty of Lauer/Dodgers footage before swindling them in that trade.
AngelsAdvocate
Lauer is poison.
Dorothy_Mantooth
What a huge boost to San Diego if Lamet is truly healthy. I think a lot of us have our doubts but one can only assume that their medical evaluations are done by top notch doctors and they wouldn’t be risking Lamet’s future if they thought he was still at risk for a major injury. At least you’d like to believe that is the case.

You’d be surprised.
DarkSide830
hope Weathers is okay. he’s one heck of a talent.
Brew’88
Good news is that the sensation Lamet felt in his arm that put him on the IL was unrelated to last year’s injury.

Righttttt
Brew’88
Rightttt, the biceps and forearm are the same like the spherical earth is flat.

This is a 100% honest question, not trying to troll or anything. What is the point where Padre fans start to not trust the health information from the team? Do you have a line yet, or do you think people on the outside are all just making something out of nothing?
Because to an outsider, Clevinger, Lamet, Morejon, Tatis and hopefully not, but possibly Weathers- have all had “sly” reports on their health at various times, and some of those “sly” reports have later proven to have been not 100% forthcoming
There’s plenty of fans who do not trust their training department or some portion of the team. I’m honestly curious, do you have a point where you start to think maybe it’s the Padres not prepping their guys enough, instead of just randomness of sport, that has led to some pretty severe pitching injuries?
Brew’88
Traquilito Hilo. Weathers has a long history of occasional arm fatigue.
1984wasntamanual
Did you read the post you responded to? It wasn’t about Weathers.
BeforeMcCourt
@brewer, I’ve heard that as well and truly hope it’s just that.
It’s probably a lot of bad luck, but it just seems like SD has a lot of young players who come up and get injured relatively quickly into their career (or shortly after coming into Org) over that last handful of years. I’m just curious, do Padre fans notice this trend too? Do Padre fans worry at all about the track record that seems to be building for young/new guys getting hurt?
Like, will it take one more major arm injury, to start to question training or whatever? Whether Lamet or Weathers or whoever? Or even then, nope you still trust them full bore?
Truly not setting you up for a joke or anything. And if you do honestly believe your FO health reports 100%, that’s your prerogative. I know how I feel and I’ve read others here, so I’m hoping to get an honest feeling on your opinion

We moved beyond that point a good 10 years ago…
Brew’88
I don’t believe anything sports 100%. The world of competition and profit margins is by nature dishonest. But when can we move on from the Padres medical staff and Preller negativity every-imaginable chance?
BeforeMcCourt
Right or wrong, Preller’s track record precedes him. Add in the recent string of injuries to SP, It’s gonna be a question so long as Padre guys continue to get significant injuries shortly after joining the MLB team. It’s hard to kick those stigmas, especially when a pattern seems to trend over multiple years
For ex, if Weathers is actually significantly hurt. To an outsider, it would seem they pushed him to the majors too fast and then once there, they pushed his pitch count very high, very fast. He had a couple of relief appearances, then suddenly he’s throwing 80-90 pitches back to back starts. Then his arm is reported to be dead. And he’s at least the 4th SP with an arm injury in 2 years. I guess I’m surprised that doesn’t concern you a bit more, or at least start to open a bit of concern?
To each there own if that’s how you feel. I’m just wondering if there’s some concern building within the fanbase? Something as small as “maybe we need to update our offseason training program.” If not, again your call. But If LAD had a string like this of severe SP injuries, many fans would have been worried well before it got to 4 injured guys. It’s really not a bad thing if you have a worry. But that’s why I’m a bit surprised
Brew’88
Being a Giants fan (who’s fascinated by the Padres admittedly) I can’t speak for their fanbase. But if I were a Dodger fan I’d be more concerned with the rash of injuries to that team. Is management pushing them too hard because of increased competition in the division? As an outsider I honestly wonder…
groundhog5150
I’m still not sure if playing 162 games this year is a good thing or a bad thing for my Padres.
CNichols
I recall reading somewhere in a prospect write up that Weathers lost a bunch of velocity part way through 2019 and his numbers after were mediocre compared to when he was sitting mid-90s.
I have no idea what the medical prognosis on him is, but hopefully since this has happened before they have a solid game plan this time around. It seems like him maintaining consistent velocity is going to be the biggest factor in terms of whether or not he’s successful, so hopefully they put him in the best position for that long term.
BeforeMcCourt
Wouldn’t shock me if he had a dead arm. I know he was thrown into the rotation mix rather suddenly against LAD a few rotation turns back. But with that, his pitch counts per outing significantly increased, and quickly. His high before that first start was 38 IIRC, then he threw 79 vs LA on 4/16. 4/22, he threw 89. Not sure how they really felt he was built up for 90 pitches so quickly, unless he was throwing extra on the side while in the pen
Today is his next turn after the 4/22 start, and his velo is way down. Hope it’s just a dead arm
letimmysmoke55
is Lamet ready to get smacked by SF?
pustule bosey
man I hope so the giants need to step up for it as this is going to be a big series for the NL west early standings

Godley is headed to the IL with a bruised ego. Still can’t get out of the 4th inning…
