The Washington Nationals have reinstated Patrick Corbin from the COVID injured list, the team announced. He will make his debut start tonight against the Dodgers.
Kyle McGowin has been optioned and placed on Washington’s taxi squad, per Pete Kerzel of MASNsports.com (via Twitter). Adrian Sanchez has been returned to the team’s alternate site. Sanchez did not see any game action. McGowin, 29, had a pair of productive outings for the Nats. As one of their primary multi-inning arms with options remaining, McGowin is sure to find his way back to Nats Park at some point during the 2021 season.
Corbin, meanwhile, ends up not really missing any time. Since tonight’s game will be the Nats’ fifth of the season, they are technically still in the first time through the rotation. That could be huge for Nats, who rely heavily on their three-headed monster in the rotation: Corbin, Stephen Strasburg, and Max Scherzer. The Nats turn to Corbin tonight looking for their first victory since Juan Soto walked them off with an RBI single in their first game of the season.

If the Nat’s want to win they have to come up with something better than Wander Suero and Eric Fedde. Rizzo has trouble giving up on bad high draft picks.

He didn’t have trouble giving up on Giolito. We’ll see what kind of pick he turns out to be. His peaks are stellar, but his career ERA is 4.43.
mlb1225
I understand his career ERA isn’t great, but the man has completley altered the way he pitches. What he did in 2016-2018 is different in almost every way compared to 2019-2021. Completley different wind-up, delivery, use of pitches, pitch location.

Giolito seems to get exceptional velocity in his “from the stretch,” delivery. However, that is based upon a small sample size in LAD-CWS spring training games.
natswin2019
I knew Giolito was going to be mentioned but even though I wouldn’t have traded him I consider him to be one of the most overrated players in MLB. So far at his best he is no more than a #3 on a good team. The White Sox aren’t going to sniff a championship if he is their ace. Giolito is a good point but I was thinking about AJ Cole, Brian Goodwin, Michael Taylor etc. Rizzo could have gotten something for Kieboom but now not so much. Victor Robles probably the dumbest player in MLB is no better than Michael Taylor.. Rizzo tends to wait until these guys have no value before he lets them go. But to defend Rizzo most GMs are the same. Nats fans will remember Jim Bowden acquiring all of his old Reds players when he came to DC.
This was just a long way to say I get your point.

Nats still have a chance to rebuild and compete down the road They haven’t signed albatross contracts like Stanton, Lindor etc. NYY have no flexibility and NYM are right around the corner from the same fate. Sell off the guys who aren’t part of the next window of opportunity.
Any team with two mega contracts is toast when trying to win a WS with anything less than a top 3 farm system.
Their one mega contract will be Soto if he signs an extension.
Natsman1
2021 is not the time to sell off players or worry about the next window of opportunity. 2019 showed yet again that you can make alot of noise in the postseason with a stud rotation. Any team like Washington that has a starting rotation like theirs needs to compete NOW for a WS and worry about rebuilding later.
If the Nats are out it by the trade deadline than they can take advantage of the abundance of 1 year deals and expiring deals they have.
natswin2019
It may not be quite the Stanton or Lindor contract but owing $210M for 6 years to a pitcher who seemingly can get hurt in a padded room could turn out to be quite an anchor for a team that wants to compete in a tough division.
