The Braves will shut down right-hander Mike Soroka for two weeks after he felt shoulder discomfort at their alternate site Tuesday, Mark Bowman of MLB.com was among those to report. Soroka has also been recovering from a torn right Achilles tendon and hasn’t pitched in the majors this year as a result.
While Soroka doesn’t have any structural damage in his shoulder, the Braves will still have to wait a little while longer for him to return their rotation. Soroka thrived with the team in his only full season, 2019, in which he pitched to a 2.68 ERA over 174 2/3 innings en route to an All-Star berth. But he wasn’t able build on that because of last year’s injury, which limited him to three starts. He hasn’t taken the mound in the bigs since Aug. 3, 2020.
With Soroka not ready for the season, the Braves opened the year with Max Fried, Charlie Morton, Ian Anderson and Drew Smyly as the top four in their rotation. Fifth option Huascar Ynoa threw five scoreless innings in a win over the Nationals on Wednesday.

As I said, the dominos will keep falling!
bhambrave
Does it make you happy? You seem to be gloating. Disgusting.
TradeAcuna
That Soroka is hurt?
Why would I be happy the Braves second-best pitcher (Anderson #1) be hurt?
SoCalBrave
I see “BravesAbsentGagReflex” changed his name again
Mrtwotone
I remember at one point you said that Anderson doesn’t deserve his prospect rating and he was gonna be a bust because his minor league numbers weren’t great. The only prospect you said that was gonna make an impact was Tucker Davidson. Not trying to be a jackass or anything, but are you going to admit that you were wrong? Nothing wrong with being wrong, I make bad predictions all the time but I try to own up to them. You just kind of changed your tone real quick. Have a good night brother.
mlb1225
Because yesterday you said you wanted to see Tatis fail so the contract would backfire so teams would stop giving out long term deals to young players? You want Tatis to fail so why would you want Soroaka to succeed?
TradeAcuna
Admittedly, I did probably say it once or twice because I was not impressed with the walks. Anderson still has tendencies to pitch around but he definitely improved, at least so far. What I like about him though is his demeanor. Does not wear his emotions on his sleeve unlike Faulty.
As for Davidson, I don’t remember ever praising him as I did not follow anyone else.
TradeAcuna
It’s a horrible comparison and one has nothing to do with the other. Tatis did not deserve the contract. Period.
Soroka was never offered an extension. He clearly doesn’t deserve it either.
Freeman though? Yes.
mlb1225
Overall, it’s a pretty mean-hearted to say you don’t want to see somene succeed, regardless of contract. Are you then saying that if Soroaka was given a contract extension after his rookie season, you wouldn’t want him to succeed either? One might not have to do with the other, but if you don’t want to see a young and exciting shortstop to succeed, then why wouldn you want to see a young and exicitng pitcher to succeed? Is it simpily because of contract? If so, that’s a pretty flimsy excuse to root against someone to play good in their life.
TradeAcuna
Here is a question for you, do you believe Lindor deserved the contract? Forget your BS righteousness. Did he deserve to be paid to the extent that he did? Better yet, was giving him all that money really worth it? (forget whether they deserve it or not).
The Mets brought him out of desperation – Cohen wanted to make a statement. It is always funny when athletes say, “I wanted to be here and I will bring a championship to this city.” If Lindor signed with the Pirates, he would say the same BS. All they care about is money and it feeds their ego.
However, for the sport, these inflated contracts only make the rich richer and further create a competitive disadvantage. Not every team can afford such contracts. Instead, the money should be allocated towards multiple ends of the diamond. This is not basketball where one person can carry the team.
Arguing this is pointless though since these contracts will continue to exist and only a handful of teams can afford em.
sevans36
He also used to say that Acuna sucked and fried was a back end starter. Slow learner I guess.
sevans36
You are basing anderson being the best off a 32 inning sample size last season. Lets give it a full season b4 we can accurately suggest that.
black69
I actually agree with him on contracts. I loved J-Up in Atlanta. He was my boy. But I take a degree of satisfaction from the fact that Dude hit 108 bombs in 6 years with the Dbacks, 56 and 59 in two seasons here and in Detroit respectively, 26 in one year with the friars and only 59 in 5 years in Annehiem.
It’s not a “I hope Tatis is hurt”, but damn, risk mitigation is not in that contract at all. They acted like him getting a hurt shoulder and possibly becoming a slap hitting second baseman was totally impossible. Again-not a prediction-but it has to be a concern now, right?
1984wasntamanual
You better apologize, you hurt mlb’s feefees.
Also LOL @ mlb’s idea that if you hope 1 player fails, regardless of the reason for you thinking that, then you automatically feel that way about every other player too. People on here spend way too much time trying to find things to be offended by.
Cohn Joppolella
Did MadBum deserve his deal?
TradeAcuna
No, most definitely not.
But the question will still remain, if he was a Braves, would the Braves have beaten the Dodgers instead of another 3-1 collapse?
The world will never know!
Mrtwotone
Thanks for owning up to it. Ian Anderson seems really composed for such a young pitcher. Folty would get shook if one call didn’t go his way and was a complete headcase. You are right about that.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
This isn’t good news. I’m shocked Ynoa threw 5 scoreless innings. There’s still Bryse Wilson and Kyle Wright too. I hope Soroka is okay. I’m glad they won both games of that double header. Starting 0-6 would’ve been bad.
bravesfan
This Shoulder issue comes up at the beginning of every season. With his mechanics, it makes sense that he would have issues there. I wouldn’t worry about that yet. If this wasn’t routine, I’d be more concerned
BirdieMan
Discomfort? Get your ass out there and pitch.
oldoak33
You go do it, Dingus.
bhambrave
At first I thought you were calling him Dingus as an insult. Then I realized he chose that name himself.
arthur blank_for owner
hahaha same here lol
Brave New Guy
I think I know who that is haha.
DarkSide830
right. because he just doesnt feel well. “discomfort” means something is wrong, perhaps something you dont want to aggravate.
baseballpun
As a non-Braves fan, yes he should do this so they lose more.
I Beg To Differ
Traded Weigel and Sobotka a little too soon it seems. Depth is always important for times like these
kripes-brewers
Knocking on wood for ya, but you never know how Dansby will do and hoping he stays healthy. But depth at that position is really important too…
Jaa1968
Atlanta is loaded on pitching
I Beg To Differ
Most teams are loaded on pitching 7 games into the season. Not so much 80 or 160 games into the season.
FredMcGriff for the HOF
@i beg to differ. That trade seems like a overpay on the Braves end. I know neither of those guys had good spring trainings. I have been hearing about Weigel for years and has decent minor league numbers. Sobotka has been awful for several years but Weigel had good minor league numbers just 2 years ago. This seems like a fleecing from the Brewers. We already have Yolmer Sanchez and Kipnis at the alternate site not sure why we need a similar guy in Arcia unless Adrianza isn’t coming back at all.

Ugh injury after injury
Kevin28786
Soroka is, sadly, an injury prone pitcher. It’s a shame, because he’s very good when healthy. Shoulder injuries are brutal, especially for a pitcher. There’s not much reason for optimism in this case. IMO. We shall see.
Hudson6
As long as it isn’t a problem with his recently repaired achilles I wouldn’t worry about it too much yet. A sore shoulder is a very common thing for a pitcher in their spring training ramp up.
brucebochyisthemarlboroman
Honestly it’s probably just a result of him being off his mechanics and compensating for the Achilles tendon injury. I’m not a braves fan but that injury does a lot more to a guy than just hurt his lower leg. It essentially destroyed the remainder of Ryan Howards career. I hope he gets right though.
MetsFan22
As a Mets fan I feel your pain. (Carrasco/syndergaard)
Mrtwotone
Cookie is a stud and a VERY underrated pitcher. Everybody talks about the Lindor trade but not many people were talking about getting Carrasco in that trade. He’s a genuine #2 starter that I dread having to face as a braves fan.
1984wasntamanual
Is he underrated or more unknown? It seems like on here people that follow baseball knew that he was a pretty decent inclusion, but yeah in more mainstream type of news he was for sure an after thought.
Mrtwotone
@1984
I would hope mainstream baseball outlets would know him. He has been one of the more consistently good pitchers for a while. I know he doesn’t have super star status like Lindor but he’s a gamer.
1984wasntamanual
Consistently good, not super star, played in Cleveland…from what I remember when I still watched that stuff he wasn’t covered much and players like him weren’t, in general.
sfes
As a Mets fan, this rotation is really underrated. Sneaky filthy. Full of first rounders who throw nasty stuff
R.D.
Ynoas pure stuff is outstanding and wilson/Wright can take over if someone goes down. Be patient with soroka, we don’t need him right now.
The bullpen though? Good lord fix that dumpster fire.
Yeti
The pen has 4 guys that could legitimately be closers on this team & others. Smith, Martin, Minter, Matzek. 3 of those guys were worth 1 or greater WAR last year. MKE’s Devin Williams (#7 in Cy Young voting) was worth 1.2 WAR last year.
I guess you could say they’re “weak” due to the guys that pitch in garbage time but I don’t see how their performance in an inning when the game is already out of reach, really matters. Tomlin hasn’t even been that bad as a garbage time pitcher anyway & the impact he has on other pitchers on the team outweighs his play.
60yearfan
Its way too early to label Soroka as injury-prone or overrated. – after one year? Really. In another area no one but me seems concerned over is the closer situation. I’m worried that Will Smith is not the ultimate answer. He was good in past years and acceptable as setup last year, but Snit might need keep a plan B in mind based on appearances so far.
brandons-3
It’s not one year. Soroka’s had season-ending injuries in 2018 and 2020. Still too early to label that, but something worth monitoring for sure.
