The Marlins have placed third baseman Brian Anderson on the 10-day injured list, retroactive to April 21, with a left oblique strain, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald tweets. They’ve also recalled infielder Jose Devers and right-hander Jordan Holloway.
Anderson was a quality performer from 2018-20, during which he combined to hit .266/.350/.436 with 42 home runs and 7.7 fWAR in 1,419 plate appearances. However, his production early this year has fallen well short of the numbers he put together during that three-season stretch. Through 65 plate appearances in 2021, the 27-year-old has batted .183/.246/.283 with one homer. Jon Berti looks like the leading candidate to start in Anderson’s place for as long as he’s out.
This will be the first major league opportunity for the 21-year-old Devers, who’s a cousin of Red Sox standout third baseman Rafael Devers. Jose Devers – whom the Yankees sent to the Marlins in 2017 as part of the teams’ blockbuster Giancarlo Stanton trade – hasn’t played above High-A ball yet, and he owns a .278/.339/.348 line with one HR and 37 stolen bases in 784 minor league PA. FanGraphs’ Eric Longenhagen ranked Devers 25th among Marlins prospects last week, writing that his speed and ability to handle both middle infield positions could make him a useful bench player in the majors.

“something something a lot of injuries in baseball this year”

Interesting to see the Marlins calling this guy up kinda early

Devers feels like an anti-Isan Diaz call up more than anything.
MarlinsFanBase
Yep. It’s looking like Diaz’s days with the Marlins are numbered…along with Alfaro and Brinson. Too many other young options that are nearly MLB ready.

Sincerely doubt Alfaro goes anywhere this year, but Brinson is a total wash. He has zero game.

Alfaro is an established big league starter. Brinson is a good glove but at this point has proven he can’t hit and likely never will enough to stick in the majors. Hes a AAAA guy.
MarlinsFanBase
Alfaro may not go anywhere during the season, but if he doesn’t step up this year to show something, it’s very likely his final season in Miami. We went after Conreras this past offseason. I can see us being more aggressive if Alfaro continues to be a defensively flawed catcher with minimal progress…and not the bat seems to have disappeared for the bulk of two years now.
Yeah, Brinson is as good as toast. I think they ruined him beyond repair with keeping him up through complete ineptitude.

Consider me out of the loop. Has Diaz been playing subpar, or is there more to it? (ie: attitude issues)
MarlinsFanBase
Diaz hasn’t played well for the most part. Then, even though the Marlins won’t admit it, I think his opting out last year and then opting back in when the Marlins were competing for the playoffs just before he got injured, may have left a bad taste in the mouths of the Marlins brass. Of course, Chisholm has come in and taken 2B from him as well. Now they’re passing Diaz up to bring up Devers who they can take their time developing.
We’ve seen that Jeter and Co. will not hesitate to drop a player surprisingly if there’s something off (Harold Ramirez, Jordan Yamamoto, Robert Duggar, etc.) They’ve been preaching a winning culture or hard work and smart baseball. It’s been Jeter and the baseball brass up front. In the background, they have others in their ownership team, like Michael Jordan, helping build the culture of winning. Early on, there was even brain picking from the Miami Heat about the Heat Culture.
It doesn’t look good for Diaz right now…and the Devers promotion is a huge sign.

I believe serious consideration should be made to changing the name of this site to MLB IL Rumors.

Still waiting on that Anthony Bender call up… Thought he was gonna get it, not Holloway
sandman12
Holloway will not fare well. Hanging sliders and straight fast balls.
MarlinsFanBase
Jeter clearly gifted Stanton to the Yankees.
It clearly is the gift that keeps on giving…to us Marlins fans!

nice to get Devers some big league experience prior to May 4 minor league start up. Not a long ball threat, but a four tool guy for sure.
