In a statement released by the Rockies, the team and executive vice-president/general manager Jeff Bridich “have mutually agreed” that Bridich will step down from his duties with the club. The Rockies will appoint an interim GM for the remainder of the 2021 campaign and then look for a full-time general manager after the season.
The baseball operations department is now under the purview of Greg Feasel, who has now been promoted to the role of team president as well as chief operating officer. Feasel was already COO and an executive VP since the 2010 season, and he has been a member of the organization for 26 seasons.
The news comes as the Rockies are off to an 8-13 start, and are widely seen as heading towards their third straight losing season. A front office shakeup in late April makes for unusual timing, yet it could allow time for Feasel and the interim GM to alter the franchise’s direction as it heads towards the July trade deadline. Assuming owner Dick Monfort signs off on the decisions, impending free agents like Trevor Story and Jon Gray could now be prime trade candidates, to say nothing of Charlie Blackmon, German Marquez, or really just about anyone if the Rockies decide that a rebuild is necessary.
Bridich has been a fixture in Denver since 2004, working his way up from his initial job as the Rockies’ manager of minor league operations to senior director roles in baseball operations and player development before being named GM following the 2014 season. That move also came on the heels of a somewhat surprising resignation, as former GM Dan O’Dowd and senior VP of major league operations Bill Geivett both stepped down, and the Rockies seemingly didn’t perform much (if any) of a candidate search before promoting from within.
Still, a shakeup seemed necessary at the time given how the Rox were coming off four consecutive losing seasons, and Bridich began the heavy lifting of a rebuild by moving longtime shortstop Troy Tulowitzki to the Blue Jays as part of a blockbuster deal at the 2015 trade deadline. However, it didn’t take long for Bridich to turn the Rockies into a winner, as the team reached the postseason in both 2017 and 2018 by winning wild card berths. Colorado lost the 2017 wild card game to the Diamondbacks, but defeated the Cubs in 2018 to advance to the NLDS before being swept by the Brewers.
This ended up being the high point for Bridich, as the 2018 Rockies succeeded despite some ill-fated transactions that ended up being some of the most notable misfires of Bridich’s tenure. It was Ian Desmond’s second season of a five-year, $70MM free agent deal that surprised many at the time of the signing, both because the Rox gave up the 11th overall pick of the 2017 draft as a compensatory pick (under the old qualifying offer system) to land Desmond, and because they were going to deploy him as a first baseman. Desmond simply didn’t produce during the 2017-19 seasons, and he chose to opt out of playing in both 2020 and this season.
The 2017-18 offseason saw Bridich’s front office spend $106MM on three free agent relievers in Wade Davis, Jake McGee, and Bryan Shaw, none of whom succeeded in bolstering the bullpen. Daniel Murphy’s two-year, $24MM deal in the 2018-19 offseason also backfired on the Rockies, especially since Murphy struggled and the player he effectively replaced (DJ LeMahieu) went on to become an MVP candidate after leaving Colorado to sign with the Yankees.
This focus on free agent moves was due in part because Bridich didn’t swing many trades, and yet ironically, his time with the team will largely be remembered for both the Tulowitzki swap near the beginning of his GM tenure, and the Nolan Arenado trade that came near the end.
Arenado signed a hefty contract extension prior to the 2019 season, guaranteeing the star third baseman $234MM in new money over seven additional seasons and seemingly locking him up as the Rockies’ signature star. However, the team’s struggles in 2019 almost immediately soured the relationship between not just Arenado and the team, but Arenado and Bridich specifically. The “disrespect” that Arenado said he felt immediately sparked speculation that a trade was inevitable, and after much speculation, Arenado was dealt to the Cardinals this winter. Left with relatively little leverage thanks to both Arenado’s no-trade clause and his ability to opt out of the contract following the 2021 season, the Rockies ended up sending $51MM to St. Louis to help cover Arenado’s remaining salary, while receiving an unspectacular trade package of Austin Gomber and three non-elite prospects.
Beyond these public controversies, there were also plenty of issues behind the scenes, as illustrated by The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal and Nick Groke in a wide-ranging piece published in March. Rosenthal and Groke dove deeper into Bridich’s conflict with Arenado, the Rockies’ lack of investment in an analytics department, the failed free agent signings, and some criticisms of Bridich’s personality and demeanor from some players and former employees, specifically in regards to his communication (or lack thereof) with the team and the rest of the front office.
Beyond Bridich, however, several criticisms were also directed at Monfort, described by one source as someone who “likes the limelight, likes being in the middle of it all.” If Monfort continues taking such an active role in Colorado’s baseball operations, it remains to be seen how a change in general manager might improve things in the Mile High City. According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, assistant GM Zack Rosenthal and scouting director Bill Schmidt are two early candidates for the interim GM role. It isn’t surprising that the Rockies would look to a familiar face for an interim job, though it doesn’t help shake the perception that the organization is very insular.
Feasel’s new role could be a step in a new direction, however, even though Feasel is himself a longtime Rockies employee. This is the first time the club has has an official team president since former president Keli McGregor passed away in 2010, and Rosenthal/Groke noted that Monfort more or less stepped into the president role. Feasel comes from a business background rather than a baseball background, and it is possible he could return to focusing on the team’s business operations after the season if the Rockies were to hire a new president of baseball ops to specifically handle the on-field product. A new voice from outside the organization might be necessary to get the Rockies back on track.
dwightgoodenspinkynail
And today the state of Colorado breathes a sigh of relief.
LordD99
It’s the owner, not the GM. Same problem exists.
dabrewcrew
It’s both. Montfort himself said the Nolan deal made no sense and Bridich kept reassuring him. Bridich also had an identical rift with Tulowitzki.
brandons-3
This is similar to when Jerry Krause broke up the Jordan Bulls and Jerry Reinsdorf went on The Last Dance and talked about how terrible that was. Owners have the final say. If Montfort didn’t think it made any sense, he had the power. That’s just an owner throwing his employee under the bus. Indicative of the franchise he runs.
Joel Peterson
It’s both. You can’t blame only Bridich when the owner hired him and kept him employed. I will say it again I don’t know how this guy got this job. It might be different if the GM had success for other teams in the past. But Bridich was an unknown from who knows where. So thats on the owner. Owner went cheap. Went with the ivy league trend but did it cheap so he got some spoiled rich dude who doesn’t have a clue how about baseball. It’s really insulting to other people who deserve or deserved an opportunity that this guy was employed.
dabrewcrew
Monfort is a terrible and delusional owner, yes. Bridich was still a bad GM under a bad owner. You can look at the way he talked down to the media. Dan O’Dowd was a better example of someone trying to do an ok job under a bad owner.
Cosmo2
The Rockies aren’t exactly in win-now mode. They’ll be very glad, once they’re really ready to go for it, that they’re out from that monstrous Arenado contract.
Joel Peterson
Yeah seeing O’Dowd on MLB channel you can tell he’s a competent guy. Little too much corporate Carl in him but he’s a smart guy for sure.
paddyo furnichuh
@dabrew….Quite possible that British made those comments publicly to save himself. Organizational success or failure starts with the top. Usually, that is the owner, board, or controlling interest.

@dabrewcrew – My thoughts exactly. This is just lipstick on a pig until the Monforts sell..

Dabrewcrew, I agree, however maybe Montfort is wising up bytes finally replacing Kelly McGregor’s presidential slot.
As for Bridich, he was a shining example of the Peter principle. He had the farm system in good shape, and should have stayed there. He was in way over his head as GM.

This sets up for Theo Epstein to take over and rebuild the Rockies. Book it.

FINALLY! After posting the same “Fire Jeff Bridich” meme on Facebook 716 times, I knew it would work! I knew the Rockies counted memes posted.

The Rockies and Cubs are going to be the two most interesting teams to watch at the trade deadline.
I think both the Rockies and the Cubs made a bad choice retaining their GM’s this off season. Both teams are in a transition phase and both really needed some new eyes from outside the organization to evaluate their talent, both on the roster and in the farm.
As a Cub fan, I really wish Hoyer would get on the phone, call Jeff Luhnow and do whatever it takes to get him to accept the GM position. One can say what they will about the Astros cheating scandal but no one can deny the amount of talent Luhnow amassed in Houston.
The Astros ushered in the anti-launch angle pitching philosophy that is currently dominating line ups and went anti-Cub three true outcome philosophy and had more contact driven hitters or at least built a better more balanced line up.
IMO, the Rockies should target someone from the Cardinal organization or the Rays. Hitting is easy to find in Colorado, pitching is not and both those organizations do a very good job at targeting the right pitchers in free agency and developing arms.
Nothing
Probably got fed up with ownership. Can’t say I blame him, they need to sell the team.
oldmansteve
What must have happened last night:
Bridich: I really think we should trade Story.
Monfort: What!? Are you trying to lose?
Bridich: (Looks at roster.)
Tumbleweed blows past a sulking Trevor Story.
Bridich: Not anymore.
Cosmo2
Why not trade Story and help the future? They’re not going anywhere this year anyway.
jimthegoat
The future is now! /s
JoeBrady
Of course.. And that might be an ownership question. You can agree or disagree with the Betts trade. But they made the decision that they were not going to be able to sign him, made the move, and got quite a good haul, imho.
The Rox are petrified to make a decision. In a lot of ways, it is pathetic.
Mystery Team
I see tumbleweed I give thumbs up.

Best move the Rox have made in a long time
DarkSide830
now how about an ownership change?
LordD99
As Mets fans can attest, you can change the GMs all you want. If you have a bad owner, nothing will change from until a new owner comes in.
CursedRangers
Cowboys fans will agree. But to make matters worse, we have a bad owner who also happens to be a bad GM. It’s a double dose of pain.

Yes, yes I am. Because an anonymous person on a comment section chastising someone isn’t going to change what that person thinks is or isn’t ok to say. But please, continue to pat yourself on the back for how great you are at virtue signaling.
It’s funny that you read that post as him making fun of Mike Brown’s dementia, since the the poster you’re so quick to defend didn’t even try to make that leap. You’re so quick to be offended on someone else’s behalf, how cute.
JoeBrady
“You’re so quick to be offended on someone else’s behalf, ”
========================================================
That;s a nation-wide problem. Folks are outraged by how some people live, and the people that they are outraged of behalf of, are fine with their lives.
For some reason, it reminds me a HS college-search meeting I attended. All of the graduating seniors said the same thing. The parents were always more upset about which schools they missed out on, than the kids were. The kids were cool missing out on Harvard, while the parents were distraught.
Joel Peterson
What does the owner do besides determine payroll? You tell me.
Cosmo2
Depends on the owner
Joel Peterson
What has the Mets or Rockies owners done besides determine payroll?
Owner makes the final decisions sure. But if the owner finds a really good GM then he’s at least partially off the hook. Even if he’s cheap the GM can make it work Ala Tampa.
oldmansteve
He can override any decision made by the GM. The GMs job is to give him the best options he can, but it is the owner who signs the checks, so it is the owner who gets final say. If the owner wants something (no matter how bad it will be for the team) it is the GMs job to either get it or try to convince the owner it’s bad.
Lloyd Emerson
Read the article, JP – it will tell you.
GarryHarris
More often than you think, player’s agents will bypass a GM and initiate contact directly with an owner and/or the owner orders the GM to acquire a player. George Steinbrenner and Mike Illich are two owners well known for that. Former owners Charlie O Finley, Marge Schott, Jeffrey Loria and the Wilpons were loudly criticized for interfering in team operation and personnel. Ted Turner was his own Team President and was very active with the Braves until he hired John Schuerholtz. Others who “interfere” are Peter Angelos, Arte Moreno and its obvious by the perpetual change in strategy that the Brothers Monfort make the list.
paddyo furnichuh
Encourage an unsuccessful, toxic culture? In the Mets case anyway.
Cosmo2
And, just a favorite example of mine, in the 80’s Whitey Herzog (one of my all time favorite baseball people) was the Cardinals’ manager, a great one. He was so tight with the owners that he was the de facto GM/team prez… those holding those actual titles deferred to his decisions, his preferred negotiations… an odd situation where ownership handled total power to a manager. If you wanted to deal with St Louis in 1984, you called Whitey, rather than the official GM
SashaBanksFan
Surprisingly not surprising. Does this improve the Rockies chance of resigning Story?
YankeesBleacherCreature
It can’t hurt them.
oldmansteve
It can only hurt them by making it more likely to sign him.

About time. As a Cardinal fan who lives in Denver this team out here is an absolute joke. I don’t know what ivy league school that guy went to but he doesn’t know anything about baseball. Pretty sure half the commenter here could do a better job as GM. I truly don’t know how this guy got a job like this.
YankeesBleacherCreature
They did more PR damage to their own fans by extending Nolan Arenado rather than letting him walk away. No small feat.

amk1920
Lasted much longer than he should have. In 6 seasons Bridich only acquired one good player in Marquez. He did not make a single good move for the franchise other than that. Also one of the worst drafting teams in the league although that’s not all on the GM.
CluHaywood
That second part is especially true. I am still waiting for Brendan Rodgers to be the guy…maybe next year.
AHH-Rox
I’d say trading Tulo right before his performance cratered was also a good move. Even though the players they got in return didn’t have much success, it freed up a lot of money.
Too bad they wasted that money on bad contracts like Desmond, Davis, Shaw, Dunn, Qualls, and Murphy.
ItsStillMillerPark
anyone that pays another team millions of dollars to take one of the better hitters / defenders in the game should walk out the door with his head down.
Awful job in Colorado….Story is as good as gone too.
jimthegoat
People probably aren’t ready for this conversation yet. But if you read between the lines, it’s pretty clear that Nolan Arenado was a problem in the Rockies’ clubhouse.
Also, Austin Gomber has been great for the Rockies so far.
jbigz12
Gomber has walked 15 in 20 innings. The wheels are going to fall off that bus any minute now.
jimthegoat
You might be right. But I did say “so far.”
jbigz12
Guess the wheels fell off last night.
He was walking 6 per 9 and only had a decent ERA because of the small sample.. He had a near 5 FIP before last nights disaster. Trade sucks. Plain and simple.
jimthegoat
Meh. When other players on the team were saying that the atmosphere in the clubhouse was noticeably better after Nolan went on the IL, that’s when you know the guy was a problem in the clubhouse. Idk if it was just the situation or something more, but it was there.
But like I said. People probably aren’t ready for that conversation yet.

Let the firesale begin. All GMs start polishing off your trade proposals or team pitches to Story for next year.

Arenado trade and possibility of getting almost nothing for Story is inexcusable, if in fact ownership did not tie his hands. Likelihood is that they did and whom ever fills that role will have the same problem going forward.
seamaholic 2
The Rockies current third baseman is playing better than Arenado. Whatever else you can say about Bridich, that was not a mistake. Signing Arenado to that extension was a mistake, but that was the owner who did that.
CrookedAsstros
LMAO yeah Josh Fuentes with his career OPS+ of 63 will definitely fill Arenado’s shoes going forward

It was both. You absolutely cannot sign Arenado unless you know what you want to do with Story. I get the cash flow issues. But if you are going to sign Arenado, you have to 100% know if you have the money for Story. If you don’t have the money for Story, you need to consider whether you want to sign Arenado.
It’s almost like they didn’t really want to think about the Story issue.

JoeBrady
So many of his moves were outright confusing. It’s one thing to mis-judge talent, even though that’ll get you fired, but I could find any logic in his moves.
He signed Desmond for $75M/5. Ignoring the age issue of signing someone for ages 31-35, where did he intend to play him? Story was young, cheap and had a .909 his rookie year. You had Blackmon in CF. So he signs a SS to become the backup 1B/LF, at $15M per?
Parra was a career 1.7 WAR player, like most teams have on AAA. And for whom they paid $26M/3. That’s bad enough, but they also had a young, controllable LF in Dickerson, and a young prospect in Dahl. In what universe does one need Parra?
Dunk Dunkington
Don’t forget the Daniel Murphy signing and letting a better player walk

The Rockies do not have four straight losing seasons. They have two (2019 and 2020). They were in the playoffs with 91 wins in 2018.

The article says that about when Bridich got the job, not about now.
seamaholic 2
Bridich got the job in 2014, long before the 2017 and 2018 playoff seasons. He had two losing seasons, then two winning ones, then two losing (well, one and a half).

Way overdue.will take years to rebuild because of the ineptness of the gm.poor farm system to boot.

My father went to Harvard on a Squibb fellowship. Apparently he was good at on-side kicks and little grounders that the catcher can field. Bridich played baseball at Harvard but I think he kind of fell into the EVP/GM job as much as anything. We’ll have to see how this plays out. I do wonder when the Ivy League shine will wear off and teams will re-evaluate their standards for hiring front office personnel.

It’s similar to when the military took a more academic approach to its leadership. These ideas sound great in a board room, but applying them in a practical setting is another thing altogether.

There seems to be a common theme with the Rockies and Rangers. Both teams usually have powerful lineups but weak pitching staffs.

The Rockies’ starting pitching is far and away its strength, and has been for years. Both the teams you mention are in the top three in quality starts this year.

Was it the Arrendo extenstion that lead to giving him away and cash to the Cardinals for a weak return just 2 years later? Or investing big chunk of your payroll into aging relievers that failed?, Signing Daniel Murphy and letting LeMahieu walk to the Yankees for the same price? or for some reason signing a guy they did not need to a big contract in Ian Desmond and did the same with Parra that got him fired?
That resume is not going to look good, if looking for another FO job.

Not a particular Rox fan, but admit to finding many of Biddich’s moves, shall we say, puzzling. And I admit to not knowing how many of them were really made by ownership. And I’ll further admit to being a huge Dan O’Dowd fan (just from his work on mlb; I always learn something when he talks).
But bottom line, it doesn’t look like he did much of a job. And I can’t lay the blame for their misfortunes on Buddy Black, who I still think is pretty good. But you can’t make lemonade out of sour lemons.
Dorothy_Mantooth
They should hire Randy Marsh. Time to implement some sarcastiball in Colorado again.
pustule bosey
bummer that means that there is a possibility story doesn’t hit the market….
solaris602
It seems that most if not all the success the Rockies had during Bridich’s tenure happened despite his incompetence. The article is correct that nearly every move he made ultimately backfired. He couldn’t have handled the Walt Weiss situation any worse following the 2016 season. Weiss said he stepped down, the FO said he was fired, but the fact was his contract expired and wasn’t renewed.
Rsox
Monfort may be a bad owner but Bridich probably should have been fired years ago. When he set up his office in the clubhouse to intentionally annoy Walt Weiss when he was Manager is probably when Bridich should have gotten the boot
solaris602
Exactly!!! Instead of firing Weiss Bridich resolved to just torture the man until his contract expired
brandons-3
The Rockies job has a potential to be one the best in MLB. Despite the Arenado fiasco, Montfort has shown a willingness to spend money. Coors presents a great home-field advantage. More than most places, if you can make the right hire that’s capable of leaning into what makes that place unique, it could be a great gig.
nottinghamforest13
There might be worse GMs out there, but the list isn’t long and you’d have to do some searching to find them.

The Colorado ballpark is over 4,100 feet higher in elevation than any other MLB ballpark. What pitcher would look to sign there if the money is not well beyond what other teams might offer? Maybe it is just not a suitable site for MLB. At least the Rockies have been to the WS once (lost), something the Mariners have never done.
stymeedone
But I hear they have good school systems…
JoeBrady
LOL at the Hampton reference. I have no issue with folks wanting the most money. But how dim-witted do you have to be in order to cook up an excuse like implying that Denver has better private schools than Manhattan, or the elite LI and Westchester private schools, which are some of the best in the world.
Angels & NL West
Can you imagine competing against Friedman, Preller, Hazen and Zaidi year after year? AND Monfort is your teams owner? Briddich was outsmarted at every turn. Even if he was competent enough to compete with his fellow NL West GMs, he still had to navigate Monfort.
I would love to see Theo come to Denver though I can’t see him being interested with Monfort around. Perhaps an ownership stake would entice Theo? Than again, I can’t imagine Monfort giving up any control.
Denver is a fantastic sports town. Rockies fans deserve a winner. I’m biased, but baseball is more fun when Coors Field is rocking.
Geebs
There’s enough wrong with the Rockies that it wouldn’t be unfair to say both the meddling owner and the bad front office share blame equally.
Datashark
They should have just let Arenado OPT OUT instead they got stuck paying him $51M for STL.
No trade works out if you end up paying that much for any player especially if that number 51 covers about 2 years of an expensive deal. IF he opted out they could have at least had produce for them and be free of any other costs and get an extra pick if they are able to do a QO on him.
1984wasntamanual
Almost like they figured he wouldn’t opt out…
jimthegoat
But what if he doesn’t opt out? Remember that if the team wants the player to opt out, it is basically 100% that he won’t.
Rollie's Mustache
I didn’t realize the Rockies gave up the 11th overall pick in 2017 to re-sign Desmond.
The Astros ended up picking George Springer in that spot (27.8 WAR) and the Rockies ended up with Desmond (-2.5) for three miserable seasons. Oooooof.
Rsox
Umm, not quite. The Rockies signed Desmond after the 2016 season and surrendered a draft pick to the Rangers after Desmond turnd down the Qualifying Offer. Springer was drafted in 2011 by the Astros and debuted in 2014

Rollie’s Mustache
I didn’t realize the Rockies gave up the 11th overall pick in 2017 to re-sign Desmond.
===============================================================================
Even if you got some details wrong, just the fact that they gave up a #11, in addition to that awful contract, and in addition to the fact that they had no position for him, just makes the signing all that much worse.
The worst part is that the only reason why they signed Desmond is because the Cubs signed Zobrist as a jack of all trades, and won the WS. Then all the pretend GMs in the MLB had to copy that model, because they cannot think for themselves.

Awe man so now it’s going to take more than a ham sandwich to pry away Marquez or Story?

Let’s just hire Lou Brown from the Toledo Mudhens.

Ian Desmond was amongst the stupidest signings ever made.

Getting blown out 12-0 by the Giants in the 8th. If only this was rock bottom for the Rockies, but it figures to get worse, In their favor, there will be lots of buyers looking for SPs at the tradeline, so whoever the new GM is might get a nice return for Marquez and Gray. Factor in Story and Blackmon’s probable July departure and they will pretty much be a second-half expansion team. Ryan McMahon and Ramiel Tapia will be their best players.

Finally. Who’s buying the Rockies?

Desmond then, is somewhat similar to starlin Castro now.
Who signs a league average ss, long term $, to play 1B?

I’m a Cardinal fan living in Colorado, and as another writer said the folks here have no idea what they are doing when it comes to baseball, and on top of that once the Broncos start training camp, the fans don’t care. Hopefully, naming a president will be a move in the right direction. Not pick a competent GM. Oh and thank you for waiting until Arenado was wearing the birds on the bat!!

From top to bottom, the entire Colorado Rockies organization is an out of control 5-alarm dumpster fire. Just a disaster anywhere you look. The only possible way out of this nightmare is for MLB to force the sale of the team or just contract it. Dick Monfort has no business owning a MLB team. Even under the best of circumstances…even if everything goes exactly as planned from here on out…this team is at least 5 years away from even being considered as an average franchise. I was at the very first home game in Rockies history, and with any luck I will be in attendance for their last. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Dick Monfort is the only person on the face of the earth who has made James Dolan look like a brilliant man and worthy of praise for the way he has run his team. Jeff Bridich was merely an extension of Monfort’s incompetence, and whoever his replacement is will suffer the same fate. The only way out of this is for other MLB owners to force the sale of this team.

There is little doubt that Jim Dolan will go down as the single worst owner in the history of sports. When I grew up, the Knicks owned NYC. Even on a weekday game against no one, the entire building shook. Dolan has made them a laughingstock.

And today is Dick Monfort’s birthday.

Memo to new GM: Play Rodgers when he gets off the DL and clear out the other 2B guys if Black insists on his odd lineup rotations, give this kid a chance!

is there any city that has a bigger gap in fan interest/passion between baseball and football? i mean a baseline gap independent of which team is doing better. was there more local interest in the 1997 & 2003 marlins than the 2007 rockies?

It is time to look outside the organization for new leadership. If the Montfort’s choose (AGAIN!) to look for the answers from within this organization then very little will change and fans will continue to quit supporting this team as it continues to be a joke.
To save their position as the owners of this disaster the Montfort’s must look outside for the answers or sell the team to someone who will.
Almost thirty years and very little success has led to one conclusion, this is the Montfort’s mess and their leadership is the biggest problem. But if they bring in someone with true baseball knowledge and get out of the way perhaps this can be saved in time.
My money says they do what they always do, hire a yes man and continue on. What is the definition of insanity? See the Montfort’s as they ARE the definition, for baseball in Colorado at least.

Worst team in MLB.
