The Cardinals announced that they’ve selected outfielder Scott Hurst from their alternate site and optioned fellow outfielder Lane Thomas. To make room for Hurst on their 40-man roster, the Cardinals transferred right-hander Dakota Hudson from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL. Hudson underwent Tommy John surgery last September, so he is unlikely to pitch this season.
The 25-year-old Hurst, a third-round pick of the Cardinals in 2017, will reach the majors for the first time. He excelled at the lower levels in his draft year and in 2018, when FanGraphs wrote, “Hurst, who is fine in CF and above-average in the corners, might hit enough to play everyday but his likely ceiling looks more like a reserve OF.”
Hurst advanced to Double-A for the first time in 2019, the most recent minor league season. He saw his numbers nosedive between that level and High-A, where he combined for a .217/.287/.299 line in 405 plate appearances.

Sounds solid – lol

I don’t understand. We been hearing “We have to see what we’ve got” for 2 years. Now there is an opening for Lane Thomas to play regularly and we pass up that opportunity to check out yet another marginal prospect? I think we’re kicking the can down the road to avoid the inevitable.
schnick24
Have you seen his defense this spring and early season. He’s bad defensively right now. He looks out of sorts when he has to run full speed forward or goes back on the ball.
andthenisaid
It was rough watching him in CF Wednesday.
Putmeincoach12
His defense was terrible last year too. I thought it had to do with him coming back from Covid because it was reported he had some serious symptoms just like Carlos Martinez did. He has lost some confidence or focus for sure in the field.
17dizzy
Layne looked like a deer in headlights in both the outfield and at the plate. Nervous??? I’m sure!! But he’s got to get past all of that before he gets brought up again.
However—- you are right!!! Layne needs to be included in a monster deal to bring in a star outfielder and an Ace starting pitcher!!!
That’s their Must have’s to have a shot at the NL championship. ——- plus to show Arenaldo that St. Louis is the place to be!!!!!
brodie-bruce
@don i agree with ya let’s see what we have in carlson, tom and o’neill first. if they can’t take the next step then trade for an of, but we got let these guys play and see what we got in the of.
giantsphan12
I recall something happening to Bader a few weeks back but can’t recall what? Cards faithful: where’s Bader?
MLBAddict
He’s been on the IL with forearm/ elbow issues, originally predicted to be out 8 weeks.
Deadguy
Hmmm this is the best we got after selling Garcia to the Rangers, trading Arozarena to the Rays for pitching, trading Mercado to the Indians, trading Serria to the Marlins after “trimming from the glut of outfield options” the Cardinals are selecting Scott Hurst from the alternative training site and by the way he batted .154 at A ball in 2019 and optioning Lane Thomas, the same Lane Thomas the Cardinals were betting on 2 years ago.
Binnington50
So you’re saying that there is a talent evaluation problem…? LOL
I wonder about trying Sosa everyday at 2b and maybe putting Edman in RF to try and get more quality AB’s in the lineup on a daily basis.
gbs42
But Carp has to play 2B!
(sarcasm)
HBan22
Don’t forget about them trading Tommy Pham for Justin Williams, Randal Grichuk for Dominic Leone, or Stephen Piscotty for Max Schrock. Or them letting Ozuna go after they gave up Zac Gallen and Sandy Alcantara for him, and using the money on Matt Carpenter instead. Or them trading Luke Voit for a setup man. Or them trading Aledmys Diaz for absolutely nothing. Or them letting Kolten Wong go so that they could keep Wainwright for another year too long. Or them letting Lance Lynn go, and signing Miles Mikolas to a massive extension for no apparent reason.
But hey, as a Red Sox fan I gotta hand it to them. They managed to dump Allen Craig on us for a still solid John Lackey. Nobody can ever take that away from them.
mrperkins
Pham was a malcontent and clubhouse cancer with a history of degenerative eye disease. And Genesis Cabrera came in that deal as well. Piscotty was traded so he could closer to his dying mother, not for equal talent. Cardinals picked up the draft pick for Ozuna signing elsewhere. If there was DH in NL with his rag arm it would have been different. His replacement in LF won gold glove last year. I have no problem with Voit for Gallegos. That is working out well for both, and Voit has no spot with Goldschmidt. Wong would have been kept in a covid-free world with normal revenue. And finally the Lackey deal…Not only was Lackey solid, dumped Craigs contract, due to the clause in his contract the Cardinals only had to pay Lackey 100k salary, then they got the 1st round pick for him signing elsewhere who they used for….Dylan Carlson.
bighiggy
It’s nothing new seeing cards outfielders excel elsewhere. Garcia, arozarena and grichuk would be an improvement on what we are throwing out there right now, minus Carlson. But Carlson, grichuk and arozarena would be a pretty good outfield. Also had they not given up on donavan Solano some years back he could be at second with edman in the outfield
gbs42
Meanwhile, Marco Gonzales, Zac Gallen, and Sandy Alcantara are pitching successfully elsewhere.
bighiggy
And Luke weaver and carson kelly are hitting their strides as well. Dont get me wrong, I love goldy, but the downward trend has been a vaccum due to taveras passing away. Since then it’s been one reach after another. Oh the what ifs
mrperkins
Luke Weaver and Kelly hitting their strides? Weaver went 1-9, led league in losses last year with ERA over 6 and a half. Kelly had OBP of .264 last year. I’d wait at least more than 3 weeks into the year before proclaiming them a great loss of talent. And somehow equating your version of the Cardinals failing is due to Oscar Tavares passing? Classy.
bighiggy
His passing led to them signing fowler. Which was one of the first bad dominos to fall. What I said wasnt a slight to taveras or to what happened, it was a terrible accident, but his passing had a huge impact on the direction of the ball club and their actions in free agency. To deny that makes you unwilling to face the truth. I dont know what throwing in being classy has to do with anything? Nothing I said was offensive? Weaver has had less results but to say Kelly’s results is premature is naive. His 2019 was very good, his only outlier has been last season. Hes started this season like he did in 2019. But if you look at the aggregiate, you have, goldy, gallegos, liberatore, Williams, cabrera, oneill, 2 years of ozuna and, burleson who was drafted with ozunas comp pick. You dont have grichuk, diaz, Gonzales, weaver, gallen,Alcantara, kelly, arozarena, voit and andy young. I would bet the traded away far out performed those brought in, by WAR. And by no means do I think every team wins every trade. But the cards have made alot, a whole lot of questionable decisions over the last 5 years. And the team is just not as good as it was 5 years ago because of those decisions. To think otherwise is blindness
its_happening
Tavares’ passing lead to the Heyward trade first, which forced the Cards to give up a good pitcher at the time (Shelby Miller), and salary in Heyward’s final arbitration year which could have went elsewhere. That is how it started. Dexter signing happened after the 2016 season. And yes, Tavares’ unfortunate passing did lead to that.
mrperkins
Love the Cardinals hate around here, lol. Mercado and Garcia? Garcia is awful. Mercado got sent down. Sierra is Chucky Carr pt 2. Randy has a chance to be special, or could be a bust, and we haven’t had our half of Libertore for a season yet. Definitely traded away talent with Alcantara and Gallen in the Ozuna deal, but did you think you would get him for Poncdeleon and spare parts? Don’t worry, the Cardinals will still compete every year and if the cardinals scouting is so good that they have all these “stars” traded away then we’ll have lots more on the way. Oh and Solano lol? Career .278 w /16 hr over 8 seasons? You are really stretching it thin there.
bighiggy
Youd rather see carp and his 18 mill at second than Solano? Stretching it? Solano at second and edman in the outfield be an upgrade over any of our outfielders not named carlson and the combo they are going with now. And at the least you could have solano over sosa. I also love how you used just homeruns as why solano is bad. Not cardinals hate, just acknowledging that their decision making has been very suspect over the last couple years. Had they cut their losses sooner with carp and Fowler they would probably be in a much better position, but “real” cardinal fans hate the truth. Loved the cards since I was a kid, but sometimes you have to call a situation for what it really is.
mrperkins
So the cardinals should have kept plugging Solano in at second until he finally had a decent year at age 31? And now thay should get him back at age 33? I’d rather try Sosa.
mrperkins
14 years. That’s how long went between the Cardinals signing Solano in 2005 until he finally had a ok year in the majors. I guess they should have traded off Wong and kept waiting and waiting for that age 31 year that finally paid off. Got it.
bighiggy
You say its cardinals hate, but it’s two fans talking about the direction the team is taking. You are the one coming of hateful trying to insinuate that everything being said is both stupid and meant to be mean. Its not. Well obviously you and the ownership think alike and you see what that’s brought the team, middling results. Just keep throwing carp, and sosa and oneill and lane out there and see the cards get a top 10 pick. Solano was let go along time ago, and yes keeping him wasnt wise, I agree. But my point was more along the lines of questionable decisions and talent evaluation, which should be acknowledged. I’ve already been to 3 games this year, and watching the team shows me, with my own eyes that the team has alot of problems. Yes its early but how long can you keep throwing carp,Williams, oneill, and, miller out there before it’s no longer early in the season and it’s too late.
mrperkins
Well the Cardinals haven’t had a top 10 pick in the draft since J.D. Drew in 1998. I’m going to trust the decision making of the guys running this organization more than yours, but I do apologize for coming off rude. I could have put forth my rebuttal better.
Rsox
No Chuck Carr bashing here. He’s still fifth all time in Stolen Bases for the Marlins.
The Cardinals continue to struggle for production in the OF. Might be worth seeing what Ray Lankford and Bernard Gilkey are up to these days. Felix Jose is probably still playing in some international league somewhere…
Buster79
Hard hitten’ Mark Whitten
HBan22
It’s not “Cardinal hate”, it’s telling the truth. The Cardinals have been butchering their team for years now, and everybody is finally noticing it.
mrperkins
Hurst is up because he is reportedly an excellent CF. Either Thomas is a covid long hauler or he hasn’t picked up a glove since ’19 as his defence went to hell. Can’t catch anything he has to go back on.
cardsfan1988
I get his defense may be good…but his offensive stats are horrible. Looking at this years team so far they are in a bigger need of offense over defense at this point. The pitchers are giving up a lot of long balls and defense cant stop that but offense can help win those games by scoring some runs to offset that
Buster79
He’s batting .217, that’s more than we’re getting out of the 5 spot in our lineup with carpenter there anyway. We need to get an outfielder who can hit over .250 so we can have a good line up other than 4 guys.
Mrtwotone
Hurst getting booed by Phillies fans while making his debut was sad.
DonOsbourne
So Andrew Miller has become a very expensive mop up man. Has anyone crunched the numbers to see what it would cost to cut bait? This team has a bad history with high priced free agent relievers. I know it’s early, but…..damn.
mrperkins
Agreed. The Cecil deal and Holland deals were murder. And they lost a draft pick for signing Holland. I don’t think anyone but Mo thought that was goung to be a good idea. It really isn’t Mo’s M.O. to do that. Wonder if he got ordered to from above with Rosenthal sidelined for year and Hicks had not yet busted on the scene.
mrperkins
Might not be a good idea to cut bait on Miller. Not because of his declining performance, but isn’t he president of the players’ union? Sadly, take your lumps on this lousy contract and ride it out and don’t make waves. He’s not Betances bad and at least he is LHP that is somewhat effective.
gbs42
It would cost his entire salary – $12.5M, I think – to cut bait, unless another team picked him up and paid him the major league minimum, with the Cards paying the rest.
