The Blue Jays placed right-hander Julian Merryweather on the 10-day injured list before their game Wednesday, the team announced. The Jays selected righty Anthony Castro’s contract in a corresponding move.
Merryweather is dealing with a left oblique strain – the type of injury that can lead to an extended absence. That would be a tough blow to Toronto’s bullpen, which has received excellent work from Merryweather early this season. Boasting a 98 mile per hour fastball, Merryweather has thrown 4 1/3 shutout, one-hit innings, struck out an eye-popping 50 percent of hitters and walked just 7.1 percent of batters. The 29-year-old also leads the Blue Jays with two saves. The closer role could now to either Jordan Romano, Rafael Dolis or both during Merryweather’s IL stint.
Castro, 26, was an offseason waiver claim from the Tigers, whom he had been with since he first became a professional in 2012. While Castro only made one major league appearance (last year) as a Tiger, he helped the Blue Jays defeat the Yankees on Wednesday with two scoreless frames in relief.
Sucks to see Merryweather go down but I like that Castro is getting a shot. He looked very impressive this spring.
He certainly looked good today
Staying healthy is Merryweather’s biggest nemesis, unfortunately. No question he can be a bullet in the bullpen.
Jays pitching is really taking a beating, though it seems to be a league-wide issue at this point.
Taking a beating for sure and yet somehow it’s been pretty good. Never would’ve predicted that’s what would be carrying them over the first couple weeks of the season.
Lots of luck going in to it so far, but it looks like the offence is waking up so hopefully when the luck runs out from the arms the offence can carry the load a bit more
Yankees aren’t swinging the bats well. Jays have up 4 but in-reality should have been only 2 if Palacios could play defense in RF. Yanks haven’t hit much the two series’ they’ve played the Jays.
Jays have been hit with the injury bug but outside of Yates they all seem short stints and they definitely have depth to overcome the IL revolving door.
They dodged a bullet though with Teo testing positive and not spreading it to the rest of the team. Could have easily been a Vancouver canucks situation.
Kinda funny the Astros DL post is closed for comments. Wonder why that is…hmmmm
The new policy that we all voted on was to close comments on anything covid related
Because 63.8 percent of us would rather have baseball discussions instead of whatever you are getting at. mlbtraderumors.com/2021/04/upcoming-changes-to-mlb…
And Dolis got the first save despite a lot of assumptions Romano is going to get the bulk while Merryweather is out.
Dolis didn’t get the save he got the win. Romano will definitely get save situations moving forward
Cursed by the box score view from ESPN app. I’ll see my way out.
Haha, the post boxscore walk of shame. Love it!
How did left hip irritation turn into an oblique strain?
BlueJays seem to cover up the real story. Or they have poor drs. See Aaron Sanchez injury history with the a jays as proof.
Many have been so down on the Jays pitching staff but other then the Dodgers who could lose their #2 for a period of time (Ray), their #3 ( Pearson), their # 6 (Stripling) their #7 ( Hatch ) and have their #5 (Roark) pitch horrible and lose their Closer ( Whats his name ) ,(Merryweather), (Chadwick) from their pen and still be competitive. Add in missing 2 of their Top 4 hitters ( Springer, Teo ) and this team has shown grit being at .500 so far. Speaks alot for their depth that some on here poopooed . Looking back at the 15-16 team I doubt they could have taken this many injuries and remained competitive. Eagerly await the MGMT haters on here saying but but …..
FYI Marko it is Chatwood, not Chadwick other wise spot on
Not sure what was on my mind as I typed that 🙂 thanks for the correction.
Thank you Tigers for Mr. Castro. Looks good so far
Jays did very well picking up Castro.
Any reason Shane Greene hasn’t been considered? I haven’t Googled him, maybe there’s an issue. I would think either Toronto or Tampa Bay would be in on him after all of the bullpen injuries.
Vlad is busting out, and Bichette is becoming a monster. Semien’s doing his thing. Fun to watch! Wait til Springer jumps in.
