The Angels announced that they have selected outfielder Scott Schebler and designated fellow outfielder Jon Jay for assignment. The team also recalled infielder Luis Rengifo.
Schebler had a decent run as a member of the Reds from 2016-18, a 1,243-plate appearance span in which he offered roughly league-average production with a .248/.323/.457 line (102 wRC+) and 56 home runs. His best effort as a power hitter came during a 30-HR showing in 2017, though both his pop at the plate and his playing time have tailed off since then. As a Red and Brave from 2019-20, Schebler only amassed 95 plate appearances, 94 of which came in the first of those seasons. He batted a woeful .123/.253/.222 with two HRs that year.
Thanks to his recent struggles, Schebler had to settle for a minor league contract with the Angels over the winter. For now, he’ll replace Jay as a sub for the Angels’ starting alignment of Mike Trout, Jared Walsh and Justin Upton.
Jay was also a minor league pickup for the Angels, but the 36-year-old couldn’t take advantage of his MLB opportunity early this season. He went 1-for-8 with a single and two strikeouts before the Angels designated him.

I wonder who holds the record for most times DFA.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Harsh. Have this image of DFA land like morning detention in Breakfast Club, which would make Jay like John Bender, a Saturday morning staple.
LordD99
Probably the same player who holds the record for being claimed the most times.
When it was a game.
I remember few years back a career minor leaguer who would get seldom cups of coffee as spot middle reliever was 9 times in a few months.

Lucroy?
seth3120
Lucroy needs to ride off into the sunset. Had some great years in Milwaukee but he’s a shell of that player. He was to good to bounce around the minors
FredMcGriff for the HOF
Schebler has to be at least tied or hold the record of least at bats as a Atlanta Brave. He currently has 1.
DarkSide830
Luke Jackson was designated at least three times in one year and retained by the Braves if I remember correctly. may have only been two.

Oliver Drake has had fun recently. Then turned out to be valuable on a ws team.

wonder what Jay could’ve done wrong in his couple of days
vegasangelsfan
He didn’t hit and looked bad while not hitting.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Imagining these very words being pronounced by Dean Womer, while Jay (aka Otter) stands in line with his brothers awaiting his sentence.
Sideline Redwine
Kind of a quick trigger on him, I agree. As bad as he may have looked, it was only a few games! And this after an extended layoff.
HalosHeavenJJ
Jay hasn’t looked good in years. Didn’t look good in spring training either. This isn’t about a few games.
stpbaseball
then why did they call on him before schebler at all? seems a little odd.
jimmuscomp
Masson said that he stocked the taxi squad with vets. So, when everyone needed to go on the IL they had to pick guys from the taxi squad and Jay was there.
Now, they can choose guys from MILB because they are home.
Very stupid COVID rule – when on the road only can call up players on taxi squad.
cjb1125
He was on the travel squad. Covid rules- you have to call people up from that squad while on travel. Angels used their entire allotment because they got hit hard by injures last week. I don’t think they anticipated ever needing him.
stpbaseball
I see. thank you for the insight.
Dumpster Divin Theo
Scott Schnebler. Wasn’t he Jack Black’s roommate and nom de plume in School of Rock?
Geno55
John Jay had a lousy spring his better days are behind him
HalosHeavenJJ
Schebler really out played Jay in Spring Training.
then again, so did the peanut vendor.
Dumpster Divin Theo
To be fair, the Peanut Vendor is a decent hitter. So is the Groundskeeper. That kid could really rake!
Ron Tingley
Lol.Peanut vendor needs to pitch with the way he throws, but still gotta give it to you.
Dumpster Divin Theo
He’s likely awesome at bags too
Halo11Fan
I’m not really sure why these two guys were not on the Taxi Squad.
The Angels went into KC with three minor league players in their starting lineup. Rojas, Jay, Bemboom.
And with the way Fletcher, Pujols and Iglesias are hitting, the Angels were in trouble.
I’d like to take Schebler for a test run.
HalosHeavenJJ
Exactly.
The taxi squad guys have positional flexibility. That’s the key. If a last minute infielder or outfielder is needed,, that’s who subs in.
Rengifo and Schebler are simply better players than Mayfield and Jay. They should have been on that squad. If the alt site guys were playing games and giving them live AB’s that might be a different story, but they aren’t yet.
cjb1125
I don’t think the angels anticipated having to use every member of their taxi squad. Over a week that’s a lot of injuries. Joe said they picked their squad based on guys he thought wouldn’t gain anything from additional practice/training because taxi squad guys get screwed. That meant veterans Joe trusted.
Obviously it turned into a big mistake and the angels rolled over against the royals.
BrandonGregory74
Schebby will play hard. He’s a good athlete with a strong arm. Somehow, he managed to lose his confidence in Cincinnati and then lost his roster spot. He seemed like a good dude and I’m glad he’s getting another shot.
GarryHarris
Although Scott Schebler’s best season was 30HR, there was not much else. Barely 100 Hits, low R and low RBI, especially low for that many HR. I don’t know about his arm but his range is always low too.

Still Unconstitutional.. SMH

In this thread: We debate the constitutionality of Scott Schebler

You’re out of order.

I strenuously object

John Jay. Decent judge. Though it’s hard to discern the stats of the O.G.’s. Its like trying to discern the true value of the o.g. Billy Hamilton vs. current Billy Hamilton. Without contemporary game film, hard to tell fo sho. At least we have empirical data on the likes of Potter Stewart.
johndietz
I never understood the Jon Jay signing. He has no pop
Dumpster Divin Theo
Hop on pop
DGHalos714
Glad to see Rengifo get a shot while Tony is out…he can move around and looked good in the spring. Let’s see how the off season pick ups shake out. Go Halos!
Rsox
I’m kind of surprised Schebler wasn’t called up in the first place. I guess Maddon was trying to one of his former players a solid but it may just be the end of the line for Jay
HBan22
Schebler is far from a sure bet to produce at this point, but unlike Jay he still has some potential upside. He has a career .760 OPS, with equal success against both RHP and LHP. He is decent defensively, too. I’ve always thought that he was a tad underrated, and that he could potentially be a valuable bench bet if given a chance by anyone other than the Reds.

Angels GM should be fired for negligence
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Please tell me I am not the only one who thinks that new Angels play by play guy Darin Sutton is just the ABSOLUTE WORST!! His voice, his comments, his need to always make a comment… Horrible..
Bring back Victor Rojas!!
GeoKaplan
You realize Victor left for a dream gig as GM of a minor league team, right? I wasn’t as if the Angels sent him packing.
Rsox
I thought Matt Vasgersian was supposed to join the Angels broadcast team? Can’t recall seeing him yet. Sutton is terrible though

Your lucky you weren’t around in the California “Brian Downing/Tony Armas ” Angel days

PIT broadcasters weren’t very good for years. So bad I thought they actually turned off listeners. Maybe they changed the broadcasters since.
Ron Tingley
Isn’t Brian Goodwin a free agent? I think Sheb could put up similar numbers to what Goodwin did. Still only 30. Goo Angels!
angelsfan4life
He is with the Pirates
Ron Tingley
I thought so. His BR page didnt note if he was still on a minor league contract. Crazy how he played well for us out of desperation and bombed in cincy last year. Now not even a depth piece on a rebuilding club. Goo Angels!
Rob66
Where are Adell and Marsh???
ShootyBabbit
Don’t think they can be broadcasters while still playing in minors
ChangeNotAlwaysGood
Yes Kaplan I am aware that Victor went to be a GM for minor league or Independent or something… Still…anyone is better than Sutton. Vasgersian has covered a couple games, both against KC. He’s great, love Gubie and LOVE Mota…
But Sutton sounds like he has a deviated septum, so whiny, and his comments are trash.
Daddy’s pitching talent did not translate to broadcast talent for Darren with an “O”…
Halo11Fan
Rengifo looked much more quiet with the glove and with the bat. It’s only one game but I was impressed.
Cubs Dynasty
John Jay. A very good player. He was great for the Cubs under Joe Maddon. I think Joe brought him to the Angels as more of a good gesture than expectation.
