The Angels have placed star third baseman Anthony Rendon on the 10-day injured list with a left groin strain, Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweets. Rendon suffered the injury Saturday, and the Angels are hopeful he won’t miss more time than 10 days, according to manager Joe Maddon.
Rendon, a former National whom LA signed to a seven-year, $245MM contract before 2020, has been a smash success in an Angels uniform. He was one of the most valuable players in baseball last season, when he batted .286/.418/.497 (154 wRC+) with nine home runs in 232 plate appearances and tied for fifth in the majors in fWAR (2.7). Rendon hasn’t been that hot at the start of this season, but he has slashed a more-than-respectable .290/.378/.387 with a homer in 37 trips to the plate.
Along with placing Rendon on the IL, the Angels called up infielder Jack Mayfield, selected right-hander Ben Rowen and optioned righty Jaime Barria. Mayfield and Jose Rojas will help fill in for Rendon during his absence, while Rowen could see his first major league action since he was a member of the Brewers in 2016. The Angels signed the longtime farmhand to a minor league contract in the offseason.
Egon Spengler
Poor Mike Trout and his one career playoff appearance… seven years ago now.
He could have been a Phillie, Yankee, or another team if he went to free agency.
Halo11Fan
The Phillies are so good. Man you are clueless.
Egon Spengler
If he’s going to be on a bad team, at least he could have been on his hometown team, but I guess that amount of money can blind anybody. Little Bryce could have signed somewhere else.
i like al conin
So Mike Trout will never be on a playoff team again? He should just give up?
Halo11Fan
Anaheim is his summer home, he like it there. He can afford to have two homes.
johndietz
I think he’s very happy living in Newport Beach in Cali
bkbk
You mean the best record in the AL? I hope you dont buy your stocks for their past performance too
Angels & NL West
Poor Jacob deGrom, the Mets are wasting his best years.
lucas0622
Unfortunately, he decided to stay loyal and not ring chase… Shame on you Trout, shame on you
FletcherFan60
Lmao the Phillies. Good joke there bud. The Phillies and Yankees haven’t won anything during Trout’s career… plus OC is the only palatable urban area on either coast. Don’t know why you think Trout would want to go to places where the weather sucks and he would have a greater chance of getting mugged and shot than making the playoffs
Cap & Crunch
“OC only palatable urban area on both coasts”
Highly debatable; unless your pulling over 200 k for a family income……. and even then that doesn’t go too far
The rest of us OC “middle class/middle aged ” …….. pay to Rent (insane prices , I could have a mansion in Utah for same price as my 1100 sq ft appt) , will prolly retire with no savings and be living in a trailer park in Idaho when we are 65 talking about how great the good ole days in Cali were
Ron Tingley
Couldn’t be better said Lol.. but I will still be rooting for my team in Idaho! Goo angels!
Cap & Crunch
Amen Ron…I’ll be there too rooting for my Dodgers !!
1984wasntamanual
I’m not a Yankees fan, but that’s just not true. According to champsorchumps, the Yankees have made the playoffs 7 times and won 6 playoff series (one of those looks to be a 1 game wildcard, I don’t know if that really counts as a series). So, they’ve definitely won more than nothing.
Jersey609
You could get mugged or shot in LA just as easy as anywhere plus you realize he’s from millville New Jersey he’s use to the area
Angels & NL West
9000 square foot mansion in Newport Beach with city lights, ocean, harbor and Catalina views vs Philly or NYC?
Halo11Fan
Poor Mike Trout. When he goes homes after games he must cry himself to sleep.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Yeah.
My guess is, he’ll muddle forward somehow.
California Halo's
I wouldn’t be feeling sorry for Mike. He is where he choose to be.
schellis 2
There is also the fact that he’ll be the greatest Angel. With the Yankees he’d be a hired gun that blended into history.
Phillies honestly are no better off then angels.
If he wanted a ring he’d have signed with the Dodgers and took the spot that Betts took.
He wasn’t forced to sign, he certainly would have got similar if not more on open market.
He signed with the angels because he enjoys being a angel. It wasn’t just about money.
I’m thrilled by it to many great players team jump like mercenaries now. Good to see one team only guys.
Geno55
Mike Trout get booed at dodger Stadium Every time he comes up to bat
J.H.
Honestly, this take is so played out. Every year there are 29 teams that fail to win it all and for the last 12 years that has not been the Yankees, and for the previous 9 years before that. There’s no guarantee that any team will win or not win every year. And the difference between playoff team and non-playoff team, championship or elimination, is often narrow. Just look at how long it took that loaded Dodgers team to finally break through and close the deal. The point is, the Angels have as much a chance as many other teams to contend, and although it hasn’t worked out, it’s not like Angels are the Orioles or Tigers. The Angels have tried, they’ve made moves, they’ve drafted well, they’ve pushed for pitchers like Cole, they’ve tried. That’s all a player can ask for.
That, coupled with his love for the area, his charitable endeavors, his wife’s desire to be in SoCal, and his desire to NOT play in his hometown and have that separation:
google.com/amp/s/syndication.bleacherreport.com/am…
All that means his choice to stay should not be derided by fans that are just mad he didn’t want to play for their favorite team. Loyalty like Gwynn’s or Ripken’s is hard to find in this time, and it should be applauded. The Angels may never win a championship during his time here, but his decision will always be the right one because it was his decision made for the right reasons. Everyone else needs to stop talking about it.
WorstThrowEver
Well said J.H.
chalk73
Poor Egon Spengler, seven years in moms basement. Sorry to be so judgmental, maybe you want to live there.
prov356
Egon: “Poor Mike Trout and his one career playoff appearance… seven years ago now.”
Just a reminder that Trout chose to be a career Angel and he’s getting paid well for it. You’re right, he could have been on any team and he chose the Angels.
Gothamcityriddler
THAT hurts!
Tatsumaki
Anyone gonna mention how Cobb looks?????
Mrtwotone
I like my Cobb on the grill.
Geno55
Alex Cobb he was nasty tonight 10 Punchout
Halo11Fan
He looked great. He deserved better than the three earned runs he allowed.
prov356
Inherited runners scoring has been our biggest problem for a few years now. I think this year has looked a lot better but Cobb has to be a little peeved.
Halo11Fan
It has been an issue. But overall, Im happy with what this pen has done. If the Angels bullpen is just average, I think this team will make the playoffs.
Tatsumaki
Dudes underrated. Borderline unhittable split finger
SwingtheFNbat
Gotcha there, Cobb was awesome! Despite the mediocre end stats. There’s something brewing here! Light it up!
Mrtwotone
@tatsumaki
Is it me, or does it seem like as soon as pitchers leave Baltimore or Pittsburgh they improve? I wonder if there is something wrong with their pitching philosophy or if it’s just a coincidence. Cobb, Musgrove, Morton, Arrieta, Strop, Glasnow, Bundy, Cole etc seem to have all reached their potential when they got away from those 2 cities.
Halo11Fan
Rendón has not look good for awhile. Something was off. This is fine. With Ohtani and Walsh hitting, the Angels should be fine for ten days
On a different note, I’d really like to see Rojas get his first big league hit
SwingtheFNbat
Yes on Rendon, as long as it’s only 10 days.
HalosHeavenJJ
Agreed and I’m actually OK with that. The team is winning while Fletcher and Rendon scuffle.
When those two get going, a couple others will likely be scuffling. Good teams tend to have different players carry them through different parts of the season.
jdodson1822
At least Fletcher is providing top level defense. Rendon isn’t even doing that
schellis 2
Agreed very few players don’t have a time where they underperform. The best I’ve seen that avoided it was hunter pence. If you look at his spilts the guy was near the same no matter the situation.
California Halo's
Better to fix the problem now than try to battle threw it and have a down year.
Ron Tingley
Yeah this Rendon guy is a bum. 9 for 31 and all singles except for one home run. Calling for Sean Burroughs old nickname the Bachelor.. am I right? Nah jk Rendon will be fine as long as that knee is good. Maybe why he hasn’t doubled yet. Goo Angels!
Halo11Fan
Who said Rendon was a bum? I didn’t even comment on his performance. I just said he didn’t look right?
bot
Be hard to expect their hitting success will continue as y’all expect. The bottom 1/2 of that lineup, especially on a max payroll, is atrocious.
Angels & NL West
Top five of Fletcher, Ohtani, Trout, Rendon and Walsh are tough outs. Even Upton, despite his early struggles, is putting together solid ABs and going up the middle more often.
If Iglesias can maintain his career .320 OBP and play GG defense, he will be an asset. Stassi’s bat has come alive in ’20 and ’21 with regular playing time though admittedly a small sample size.
Not the ’27 Yankees, but scoring runs should not be the Angels problem this year.
PapiElf
Ben Rowen is back in the majors???!!!
despicable_you
I feel like he always ends up on one knee whenever he swings. Possible correlation?
Halo11Fan
Talking with a friend about Rendon last year when he got off to a slow start, I wasn’t worried, he looked fine. This year he didn’t seem like he was aggressively going after mistakes and seem too passive protecting the plate with two strikes. I wonder how long this has been bothering him.
FletcherFan60
Pain.
Agony, even.
Ducky Buckin Fent
All these injury updates are pretty much Not Fun for us all.
richt
Ben Rowan debuted with Texas in 2014.
HalosHeavenJJ
Knowing the Angels medical team this means the entire leg needs to be amputated or something.
SwingtheFNbat
The call ups were interesting, if you had to pick 2, I wouldn’t of guessed them. Hold the Fort boyz!
dodgerblue1
Too 5 most overrated players in MLB
SwingtheFNbat
If you’re referring to Rendon, get out of here hater. The Dodger blog misses you.
chalk73
I think he was talking about Cody Bellinger.
SwingtheFNbat
Haha chalk73, I was gonna go to his level and say that, “take away Bellingers MVP year” he’s vary mediocre..lol… Did I say that, yes I did, but true.
Halo11Fan
I gave you a thumbs up Swing. Dodger have more than their fair share of trolls.
SwingtheFNbat
Gotcha yah Halo11, I just don’t appreciate anybody bashing anyone’s fandom. It just makes you look ugly.. It’s not even Dodger related.
No rocket science here, but the end of the day, nobody likes to lose, but everyone dislikes a bad winner.
birdsfan415
good for Ben Rowen, first appearance since 2016 and third season since 2014, love the dedication
Geno55
Atlanta Braves got robbed last night how can the umpires review that look at the replay still calling him safe clearly never touch the plate he was out
Halo11Fan
He blocked the plate and didn’t give a sliding lane. The catcher committed an illegal action. Why isn’t that being talked about?
GarryHarris
The catcher can block the plate if he has possession of the ball.
Halo11Fan
After what happened at the Angel game, I’m not sure what the rules are anymore. But if the catcher can block the plate, then the runner should bury him.
chalk73
It’s early in the season but it feels good to have the best record in the AL… go Angels!
SwingtheFNbat
Like it! Love it! Get some more of it!
