The latest injury updates from the American League…
- The White Sox expect to activate shortstop Tim Anderson from the injured list when he’s first eligible Thursday, manager Tony La Russa told Scott Merkin of MLB.com and other reporters. The former batting champion has been down since April 5 with a strained left hamstring, and the White Sox have turned to a combination of Leury Garcia and Danny Mendick in Anderson’s absence. Garcia has gotten off to a terrible start this year, while Mendick has been great over an admittedly tiny sample size of 12 plate appearances.
- The Rays placed right-hander Chris Archer on the IL on Saturday with forearm tightness, but they’re optimistic he won’t miss too much time, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times relays. While Archer won’t throw during the next few days, the hope is that he’ll return to the mound by the end of next week. Archer, with whom the Rays reunited on a $6.5MM guarantee in free agency, has been limited to two appearances and 4 1/3 innings in the early going.
- More on the Rays from Topkin, who writes that center fielder Kevin Kiermaier ran “at about 70 percent” Monday and could return to their lineup within a week. Kiermaier went on the IL on April 6 with a left quad strain, and the Rays have since used a combination of Manuel Margot and Brett Phillips in center.
- The left biceps strain that sent Tigers designated hitter/first baseman Miguel Cabrera to the iL over the weekend is mild, Jason Beck of MLB.com tweets. The Tigers are hopeful that Cabrera will miss “the shortest amount possible.” Cabrera came out of the gates slowly before the injury, as the future Hall of Famer has hit .125/.222/.292 in 27 plate appearances this season.
- Yankees righty Clarke Schmidt, who is dealing with an elbow strain, received a cortisone injection Monday, per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com. He could go back to throwing either this week or next if all goes according to plan. Schmidt was only supposed to sit out four weeks when he went on the shelf in February, but his injury hasn’t healed as quickly as expected.

When I first read that, I thought Cabrera had been traded.
SwingtheFNbat
In all due respect to Cabrera, a Tiger fan would of liked that.
bobtillman
Dombrowski would likely give Alec Bohm for him.
Yes, I’m kidding. Plus, Avila probably wouldn’t do it.
racosun
As a Tiger fan, I want to see the big guy finish up his career with us, no matter his salary. He may not have much left in the tank, but he can really help the young hitters Detroit has.
GarryHarris
I can’t reason why any team under any circumstances would want to acquire Miguel Cabrera. If he did get traded, that would be bizzare news.
Firefraudman
Some team that wants to bring fans to games but knows the team isn’t going to be good enough to attract fans…..so they bring in a future hofer.
GarryHarris
There’s never been a team like that in my lifetime. Cabrera won’t bring in fans on his own.
Gothamcityriddler
Ha! Who would take him?
YankeesBleacherCreature
Miggy, Pujols, and Chris Davis in a classic change-of-scenery swap. Robbie Cano missed the train.
flmetfan
Yes, three new DH! Brilliant.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Bothersome that Schmidt getting a cortisone shot in his elbow. Don’t see one given there too often.
Also…a win is a win.
Man.
Chapman was fire. He absolutely overwhelmed that poor Gurriel kid. He looked like a mallard on opening day.
(seeking alternatives to “deer in the headlights”)
Srechter35
Ducky, that split chappy is throwing out there is flat out unfair. He’s thrown 7 of them and has 5 k’s with it. All of his outs but one have been k’s so far this year, actually. Nuts.
Ducky Buckin Fent
That pitch is the baseball equivalent of a mic drop, @sretcher.
With the emergence of Loaisiga*, this bullpen may be the deepest group we’ve seen from this core which is saying something.
Also: it looks like we could easily get 40+ jacks from the catcher position. Zounds.
*Twice fangraphs has tried to identify the “next Josh Hader” & both times they’ve landed on Jonny Lasagna. The second time they just started with whomever was runner up & wrote the article from there.
Srechter35
Definitely high hopes for Mr. Lasagna. He’s looked fantastic so far. Certainly has the arsenal to be elite.
As for Schmidt, though, it’s hard to be super optimistic about his health. He was so clear in the interview he gave a month or so ago that his arm was structurally sound. But continued discomfort, second opinions, and cortisone shots don’t inspire much confidence. Hope we see him this year down the road, but I’m honestly just hoping he’ll be healthy enough to be a factor in 2022 and beyond at this point..
YankeesBleacherCreature
@Ducky Yeah that splitter was straight-up nasty. Hope it quiets the naysayers that clamor his fastball velo is down.
What’s up with offense seriously?? Vintage Cole got a lift from a backup catcher. 3K’s from DJL?!
If Schmidt’s cortisone shot doesn’t work, they got to shut him down completely instead of risking TJ surgery.
Ducky Buckin Fent
“…but I’m honestly just hoping he’ll be healthy enough to be a factor in 2022…”
Man.
Could have gone all night without hearing that.
Pitchers. Pitching prospects. Bourbon.
He was a health risk when we drafted him. So it’s obviously disappointing but really not very surprising.
Ducky Buckin Fent
He was sitting 100-101 tonight. & it’s April. So looks like his velocity is just fine. But I always wonder when it won’t be, too.
The one thing I’m *not* concerned with at all (aside from health) is our ability to put up runs.
So: I’m going with, “it’s early”.
Cortisone shot will merely mask the pain. I get them for my shoulder & my retriever gets them for her knee. They don’t heal anything. Just make the symptoms tolerable. That’s the reason (I think) we don’t see them used on elbows very often. Don’t want to necessarily pitch through an elbow injury.
Schmidt had TJS once already I thought. He certainly has the stuff to make it. Just gotta stay healthy enough to get on the mound.
YankeesBleacherCreature
It is early and Schmidt did have prior TJ. Shots do help speed up the recovery process by bringing down any inflammation faster.
thecoffinnail
The problem with Loasigia is he can not stay healthy. He has been a decent prospect since he was with the Giants but every year he would have a serious injury. It’s about time they moved him to the bullpen. Hopefully he will finally be able to stay healthy and could easily be come the heir apparent to Chapman.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Was actually thinking about: Jonathan Loaisiga Closer during the game.
Also: another point. The Yanks are even more reticent to move a pitching prospect to the pen than most (all?) other clubs. Making the “starter or reliever” decision what seems to be quicker than anyone is a big part of what makes the Ray’s staff’s so good.
If Loaisiga is in their organization he has been up for a couple seasons & they trade him this coming winter.
This is one thing (sans the trade) that the Yanks should learn to emulate.

@yankeesbleachercreature
When Eloy went down, I actually thought, ‘could we convince Reinsdorf and La Russa to take Pujols from us? How much money would we need to eat?’ I felt like there was at least a non-zero possibility that La Russa could convince Reinsdorf to force Hahn to acquire him if Perry called Tony direct to negotiate.
YankeesBleacherCreature
Lol. Pujols isn’t going anywhere. I do believe the Angels like his presence in the lineup to sell tickets yet not necessarily to help the team in the standings.
Gothamcityriddler
Robbie didn’t actually miss it, he saw it coming but just said, “Ahhh, the hell with it.”
CluHaywood
Anderson can’t come back fast enough. This team is floundering offensively right now. Outside of a bone headed error by the Indians, the only player to record RBI in the last 2 games has been Adam Eaton…
maximumvelocity
When Anderson comes back, I hope the person sent packing is Lamb.
With Mercedes hitting, and Mendick off to hot start, Lamb serves no purpose.
No point in keeping a guy with one start and no other appearance in two weeks.
They may need to play Mendick anyway if Madrigal isn’t going to be anything more than a 260 hitter with zero pop.
ChiSox_Fan
Madrigal hit .340 last year.
He will be fine.
The lowly Cubbies wish they had “2-strike” Nicky’s pop!!
maximumvelocity
I’m less concerned with his average, and more concerned with his lack of power and surprisingly weak defense.
His only XBH this year was a short line drive past the first-base bag, and his defensive metrics are all in the red.
He’s walking more, and I expect the average to go back up, but keep in mind his OPS+ was still barely above average despite hitting 340. There is no margin for decline in his offensive game given his approach.
ChiSox_Fan
Nicky 3/4 tonight while Rodon tries to be “PERFECT”!!’
BobGibsonFan
If Akil Baddoo were wearing a Yankee uniform, could you imagine how many threads mlbtr would have talking about him?
How did mlbtr miss on this? Is his launch angle wrong? His exit velocity too low? His spinny rate not spinny enough?
I can just see the news room at mlbtr… “hey tim, I have this great article about rookie of the year runner up miguel andujar… he might play in a game.” Or
“Tim…Tim… Tim… when voit gets healthy…. will Jay Bruce move to the bench?”
Ducky Buckin Fent
You’re jealousy is unbecoming, @Gibson.
DarkSide830
patience. they don’t always make original pieces, but I think he’ll get one soon. too good not to.
Idioms for Idiots
The Sox offense is anemic, the defense is sloppy, and the bullpen is one of the worst in the league after 10 games, yet they sit at 5-5 and only 1/2 game out of first. In other words, they couldn’t play any worse as a team and they are still right there in a weak division ripe for the taking. But I’m sure the bullpen won’t correct itself and guys like Moncada, Abreu, Robert, and Madrigal won’t improve at all. After all, if you can’t do well the first 10 games of the season, how do you expect to improve the next 152 games.
ChiSox_Fan
Too bad Sox didn’t play the Pirates 6+ games to start the season.
Ha ha Cubs! Have nowhere to go but down and out of playoffs! Let the rebuild begin!!
ABCD
Actually, nowhere to go but up. Their offensive slump has been historic. Glad to see you’re still worried about the Cubs though.
ChiSox_Fan
Jockstrap’s mom – glad to see your son batting .129!!!
Haha!
ABCD
No class as usual. I’ll leave you to your Cubs voodoo dolls.
64' Yanks
Just changing the names and you could have been blogging about the Yankees too.

As for Archer, Glad to hear he’s on the mend. He’s needed as a SP till early June till our young studs, Josh Flemming, McClanahan, Honeywell, Patino and some 3 other starters are chomping at the bit for the big show.
Mjshof
NYY will live and die based on the success of their young pitchers’ ability to step up
